Don't dis Wesley Crusher! August 30, 2001 1:56 AM   Subscribe

Enough with the Wil Wheaton crap, already. Has he commited some offense that I am unaware of? He seems like a nice guy. Why dis him?

I'm not sure, but the offense might have something to due with his stint as Wesley Crusher, possibly the worst Star Trek character ever.

Oh, like Whoopi Goldberg didn't frost your ass... Until he logs in here, I think the hijinks will continue. Cmon in Wil, the water is fine...

If the guy's going to be an open wound about a couple of people who said mean things about him on MetaFilter, he's running a serious risk of becoming this community's Natalie Portman.

Besides, many of us are as giddy as schoolchildren about his new weblog. Yet he continues to fish for comments like these from his visitors:
  • "The jealously towards your instant blogging status was tangible reading the comments on mefi and I laughed AT them not with them."
  • "Personally, I think a lot of the reason people have been ripping on your site (I'm thinking MetaFilter here) is simply that most bloggers are insanely egotistical and obsessed with popularity, and they can't stand the fact that you're being talked about (and linked) everywhere so quickly. There's a very strict caste system in the blogging world, and somebody with 'real world' name recognition upsets the system."
Blech.

What, we'll all suddenly want to see him naked?

I didn't see him fishing for those comments, I'll save my blechs for the ass-kissers who posted those things.

rcade, not to jump the topic's ship, but what did Natalie Portman do? I know nothing about her besides her films.

If the comments about Wil's blog were indeed intended humorously, perhaps as a community it would be worth MetaFilter's time to consider why the attention was perceived so negatively... Perhaps because he has a more recognizable name we were more likely to hear about and comment on his hurt feelings; but he's certainly not the only one. I really do love MetaFilter because my own deeply held convictions on various topics are challenged regularly by intelligent, articulate people. But that does not change the fact that tone here can be extraordinarily ugly - very quickly, too - and when the mob turns on an individual, I'm sure the personal effect is painful indeed. Even now, I realize I'm not innocent in this, but reading Wil's response and the messages from his readers really did give me pause...

One more thing, did anyone notice the LiveJournal dude's comment about getting a live journal? Those guys are relentless.

cell divide, Natalie Portman is really popular with the trolls over at slashdot. If you go browse the comments for any given post at -1, I guarantee you will see comments relating to Natalie Portman and/or grits. Why? I have no idea.

"Oh, a fat, sarcastic Star Trek fan! You must be a devil with the ladies!"

Anyone who loathes Wil Wheaton because of Wesley Crusher can safely be ignored. About everything.

PERHAPS YOU FORGET THE EPISODE WHERE WESLEY CRUSHER BECAME THE MASTER OF TIME AND SPACE.

Not to jump the topic's shark, but Live Journal should start having users tithe. Religions have been started on less.

A few months ago, it never would have seemed plausible to me that this community could have anything like Slashdot's Natalie Portman trolls. The fact that it now seems perfectly possible is... distressing.

Um, Internetgeniuses: You might want to blame the writers for that, and not Wil Wheaton.

Hi Solistrato! We've been having a difficult time distinguishing fact from fiction! Thankfully we have insightful Metatalk readers to help us out!

PS - We enjoy the idea that every conversation on Metafilter should be drained of humor or, at least, follow your rules of it. Perhaps it's time for a Metatalk discussion on it?

PPS - Oh wait.. oops..
