Double posts are not always deleted. There's a mystical selection process for deciding if they stay. I they include 1) how long since the old post 2) if the comments are interesting 3) whether Mathowie is on vacation 4) if the moon is in the 6th or 7th house 5) goldfish.

I am generally against the idea of mathowie assigning any kind of admin status to others. But maybe in the case double posts, where there is really not much ambiguity as to whether or not something qualifies (at least in some cases), it would be a good idea to empower one or two other people to take care of them.

Kwanstar, your comment pleases me, but none of your links succinctly adhere to my complaint. Within the last week, there is undeniably a specific, rapid movement towards cruddy saturation of double-posts on the front page.

2. Does anyone fucking search before posting? Apparently not. Don't tell me that the search function is fallible. It isn't if you use it properly. Google isn't (and shouldn’t be) excluded from this either.
The Search function sucks enough that only the on-site Google search should be used and even it can not be trusted. Search by URL, then the document, site or article title and follow by entering first paragraph in the article in the search window. Then do a key keyword search using at least three key words. Search by proper names mentioned in the links, too. Even with all this, the Google search will sometimes fail. I have searched via on-site Google by URL, then article title, then article text and then proper names and not found well remembered posts which I later stumbled across serendipitously.
It should be agreed that it is not particularly good form to rewrite someone else's past post with a few new links added*--there's little new or unique in that. At least have the good grace to give credit where credit is due.
I think that this was worth posting, naxosaxur, and it's why double post call outs are necessary.
*Updates not included.

wait, this isn't about the search sucking (let's be nice, the J doesn't run anymore, or now the J runs, I don't know, whatever, we have a space in a propper server farm) this is about clear double posts. Doubles that are easily found in the search, no matter how crappy that search is. I'm with naxosaxur, stop it.

These double-posts, ultimately, harm no one, and may be of interest to people who missed them the first time. I know I don't read every single link every single day, because, you know, I have other stuff to do with my time. Interesting links are interesting links, and I click on them when they arise. With a site this large and catholic, there's bound to be some harmless double-posting. Yes, people can and should search before posting, but, really: no harm, no foul.
Seriously: relax. It's all gonna be OK.

Forgive me if this has been suggested before, but why can't the MeFi engine automatically detect double posts? It could do this by indexing every posted URL, and then have the posting mechanism do a search against this index; if one or more URLs match, a warning could be emitted to alert the poster of the problem, and for single-link posts the system could reject those that referenced known URLs. It's not rocket science.

In my defense, I did a google search of the site and didn't find anything that hinted at a double post.
Unrelated, the occassionaly double post helps those of us who occassionally miss topics of interest only to watch them brought back up later.

Seems to me that interesting sites from 2-4 years ago are pretty consistently allowed to stay. I recently got accused of it--and was guilty--but the post stayed.
I like seeing and learning about new things much more than seeing and learning about things instantly available here. Sometimes, double-posting is okay.
And I strongly suspect that there's a number of users who delight in nothing more than calling out a double post. Which is usually obnoxious.

drezdn, this thread certainly isn't about manipulating a specific user into a punitive role. I was going for a very general oeuvre to exemplify the current double-post phenomenon. I'm trying to address the collective defect that deems it acceptable to apathetically search before posting. Or the issue where conscientious users are getting unnecessarily scolded in threads when they indeed signal that a double-post has been made.
dorian & amberglow: My apologies for being meticulous, but the double-posting is rapidly beginning to irk me (and clearly others), and I want to address the problem before it gets blatant. I'm trying to be as civil as possible, not like RAWR IM ANGRY AT DOUBLE POSTING AND MAKING A THREAD ABOUT IT! RAWR!! That would have been fun, but not very productive!

Hmm, have we reached a consensus about adding some new material if possible when doing so ? And have we reached a consensus on giving credit where credit is due when such material is reposted by mentioning and linking the initial posts ? I'm not sure I recall any such agreements but they seem good form to me. Otherwise aren't we greenlighting the strip mining of the posting histories of older members by the lazy and unimaginative among the new members ?

Actually, yes. I found this neat site, did a search on that URL, didn't get a hit, constructed my post, including this site, did a search on what I thought the key word in the URL ("gigazoom"), still came up clean, was about to post, then decided one more search on the homesite posting the picture ("triton.tpd.tno.nl"), and found this, where the last site provided in the post linked to that site. Shit. Deleted the whole damned thing and gave up on it.
But since you asked, I thought I would let you know that yes, Virginia, there is a neoFite that searches before posting.

I miss a lot of people's names when they're unfamiliar, but I'm surprised so many people blocked out a second "x". That always stood out to me.
I thought this was a well done post. I'm not bothered enough by the phenomenon to go to this much trouble, but I do think it's worth keeping out eye on the ball about double posts. Of course, I often miss interesting things the first time around, too, so it's hard to come to a fair system on this. If you saw it the first time, it's annoying for the page to be covered in old news. If you didn't, you appreciate the chance to see it now.
The 'scroll past' solution can only go so far - the site is definitely better with fewer good links than overwhelmed by lousy links, which is how you tend to miss the good post the first time around to start with...

I'd missed a bunch of them the first time they were posted. I don't mind them being there.
Can we get past this boring "argument"? MetaFilter is not about you and what you have seen; it's a community site with only a few rules. This is one of them. If you don't like it, start a site where things can get posted over and over again, until not a single person is left who hasn't seen them.
Didn't we come to a consensus about ancient things (2000-2002) being ok to be reposted?
No. Some people seem to think so, but then some people think DPs are fine in general (see above). If you must reprise an oldie but goodie, then do as y2karl suggests and add some new material and give credit where credit is due by mentioning and linking the initial posts; thus you minimize the likelihood of snarks and show that you took the trouble to check.
He'll always be naxosaur to me

You got me dead to rights.
On preview: Too late, CunningLinguist. And I note that even in that thread, a classic example of the worst sort of double post, one that even its poster asked to be deleted, lodurr is claiming there's nothing wrong with it. Glad lodurr isn't running the site.

Um, naxo, languagehat had already called this out in the Blue at 3:46 PM PST on December 27, almost four hours before your gripe here. I'm not sure whether the prevaling guidelines link the Blue and the Grey for this, but on a domain-wide basis it's a double callout in the same damn afternoon. If you must be a smirking martinet, can you at least avoid being so bloody repetitious?
So: yes to what Beth said. Get a fucking hobby. If you can't think of one all by yourself, I've got some ideas.
Oh, and various Mefites typed:

I hardly think my dubai post qualifies as a double post- considering that ONE of the links was previously covered two years ago and I included seven other links as well. Calling the entire thing a double-post is just nitpicking, especially when the palm has had several major developments since the last time it was posted.

This call-out was fine. The only way I learned how the MetaFilter search engine worked was in a similar thread last month. Many users assumed it was stupid to think it worked like other search engines, but one really has to look at users, not architecture.
I had searched and found nothing and no one explained to me that I get the key words, in order, searched for together. I ended up with a double post. I just didn't know. Thankfully no one was too nasty to me.
Then I read a thread which explained it. I've not had any problems since and I think repeating that information a few times in a few places would do a world of good to stop double-posting. Alleys axes lemon tweezer would search for those words in that order, as I understand. Seeing as the engine will not get changed for several reasons and that Google doesn't always work, it's good to plaster this information all over the place.
I also concur that if it's pre-2002 and original (or something new relating to that link) then it really does no harm. However, if it's from February to December 2004 (such as the Jewel Eye thing, recently making its rounds around the Interconnected Network again), it should be left off the front page. It's not the first time the same thing has made the rounds more than once, but the best of the world wide web should make an effort not to perform the same old song and dance (unless it's the Dip).

It looks to me like you're very effectively hassled, else you'd simply ignore me; in fact, I think you're over-reacting. And anyway, if you have, as you say, so much trouble deciphering my language, how would you know for sure what I'm up to? Maybe I'm the Rabid Decoy of the Onslaughting Parvenii. (Ever seen a "film" about a shoplifting gang?)
Anyhow. For your own good I'd recommend you ignore me. I don't know if you've had the presence of mind to notice (heh heh heh), but as a general rule I only go after people who fuck with me more than once, like you and your "Pullyou" languagehat for instance, and that without continuing reciprocal feedback even my most venomous grudge fizzles. See how woefully ineffective my poking at Quonsar was? You, on the other hand, are among that Select Minority who just can't resist my virtual pheromones. (Is that Nature or Nurture?)

Swedish (or scandinavian) Glögg - the hard way:
a bottle of aquavit. In a "glögg"pan put 75 grams of raisins, 75 grams of sweet almonds, 2 pieces of cinnamon, 7 cardamoms, 5 chunks of clove, perhaps some fig, ginger and seville orange peels. Pour in the akvavit and a bottle of red wine. Put on a 'grid' above the pan 2 or 3 kilos of sugar cubes. Pour the akvavit+wine mix on the sugarcubes with a spoon while heating the mix and setting fire to the cubes in order to melt the sugar, let the sugar melt for while until a lot of it has dripped into the glögg.
Serve.

I’ve chronologically listed above eight double post aberrations from browsing the current front page. I didn’t even do a proper search or troll through lofi.
1. Why have these not been deleted? It always was de rigueur for double-posts to get deleted. Why do they remain? Why do all the users who point out 'double-post' get ridiculously lambasted?
2. Does anyone fucking search before posting? Apparently not. Don't tell me that the search function is fallible. It isn't if you use it properly. Google isn't (and shouldn’t be) excluded from this either.
3. This bothersome phenomenon has reached a level where it demands a call-out, so don't waste your time with the lazy classic ‘scroll past it’ taunt.

3. This bothersome phenomenon has reached a level where it demands a call-out, so don't waste your time with the lazy classic ‘scroll past it’ taunt.

dabitch, does glögg age well? I got a bottle from a friend last year, and haven't opened it yet.
Languagehat and I will be sharing a bottle of scotch over by Grant's tomb.

me3dia, I know that it improves over a few months but have never managed to keep any for longer than that. I imagine after a year it would be pretty tasty, assuming that whatever bottle or container it's in has little or no air in it. in any case the only choice is to try it!

Cool, thanks dorian. The bottle was as full as a wine bottle, corked and everything, and well maintained, so this could be the best glögg ever!

pas d'problème. (btw, by "never managed to keep any for longer than that" I meant "we never managed to resist drinking it", not "we could not drink it after a few months 'cos it went bad"....! yes, I love the spiced wine.)

davy, in case you haven't noticed, I [261]apologized to you for my piling on in your recent MetaTalk thread.
No LH, I hadn't heard. I got busy with other things and lost track of a few threads. Like this one here, see?
Oh and by the way, stavrosthechokingchicken and mr_crash_test_dummy should acknowledge the homoerotic nature of their attentions to my penis. (I'll leave off the obvious remark about why it's an easy target...I think.)
So who else will line up to show how important to you I am? As in, oh, "I'm too am powerless to ignore a thing davy says." (::cackles::) Should somebody start a "davyholics anonymous"?
