IRC Without Download February 4, 2005 1:07 PM   Subscribe

I've been too busy to hang out on the metafilter irc channel, so I just wanted to say hi to all the cool people there. Is there any way one can access that without downloading an irc client?

Well, you could use a Java IRC client that loads in your browser.

Or, if you can use Mozilla, it comes with a built in ChatZilla IRC client (probably in the 'Window' menu, I think; it's in one of the menus somewhere).

Well, no. It's IRC. But there are IRC clients galore, including Chatzilla which runs within Firefox. Have a look at the wiki.

No, you're dios.

Is there a blind monkey randomly deleting comments? Because surely no person has the time or the grand mal retentiveness to delete such an innocuous and obscure reference...

such an innocuous and obscure reference...

Sorry, I guess I didn't know the cripple joke reference and neither did Matt. Care to share?

And it had to do with HTML versions of chat clients....how?

eh. It was a tad off-topic, but pertinent to the user it was directed to. But certainly not offensive or known to more than four or five people.

Though, I'd totally dig a completely rigid requirement of totally on-topic comments. I look forward to every off-topic comment being deleted as well.

I prefer a middle ground where people are free to answer questions and riff on that within reason, and mystifying jokes are frowned upon.

the joke was an injoke for #mefi. i guess anything mystifying to the moderators isn't allowed.

(which is fine. just good to know).

Well, something that mystifies them is sure to mystify me (and this one did).

I'd prefer disemvoweling to outright deletion, though.

I go to #mefi often enough, and even I had no clue what that joke was supposed to be out.

heh. it occurred when dios first started showing up. he told a joke about a girl in a wheelchair.

great fun was had by all.

and now that i finally see that i remember #mefi events more than personal life events....well. hmm.

yeah. that was classic.

hey dios.

I'm not trying to be pedantic, but this thread clearly shows why #mefi should stay on #mefi, and MetaFilter should remain MetaFilter ... and never the twain should meet.

#mefi isn't so bad. Second time in and the room wasn't populated by slavering trolls. Relax. The java thing was strange though, probably just my stupid browser.
posted by FunkyHelix at 3:40 PM on February 4, 2005

I'll have to slaver more next time.

We'd just gotten done eating the last random person to venture in, so your experience was atypical, FunkyHelix.

mathowie explains why an innocuous comment got deleted: "I prefer a middle ground where people are free to answer questions and riff on that within reason, and mystifying jokes are frowned upon."

I'm new here, but I've lurked, pretty much on daily basis, for about a year. One reason I lurked so much, even when I couldn't contribute, was because many of the commenters has an identifiable -- if often snarky -- personality.

Much of the charm is the comments which aren't on topic.

I fear that the increase in deleting "borderline" comment will cause commenters to self-censor, and flavor that makes Mefi so appealing will be lost in the process.

If you don't get a joke, sure, you run the site and can delete it -- but what is gained by deletion?

Obligatory on-topic message: no, using IRC requires an IRC client. Chatzilla is free and works.

i left my crippled html chat client hanging on the fencepost.

avoiding the obligatory whine-filter thread in metatalk that seems to have become so common in the last month or so?

no, using IRC requires an IRC client.

q's link works for in-browser IRCing just fine. Not sure whether or not it's using 6667, but i'm sure you'd find out quick enough whether or not that port was blocked.

Next time in MetaTalk: I love reading Metafilter with my RSS aggregator, but I want to be able to read comments. Is there a way to do that without downloading a web browser?
posted by grouse at 4:54 PM on February 4, 2005

The bottom post here has a list of 5-6 cgi irc clients. A web browser is all that is required.

I have used the galgenberg one several times and it has worked swimmingly. Everyone seems to go "?!" at the fact that I'm online from .de, til I explain what I'm up to. Hope this helps.

What? I thought the best parts of Metafilter were those that were engineered by the #mefi cabal.

Oh no. I've said too much. There is no cabal.

Hey Dios, #mefi has been sadly quiet without you.

Perhaps you can get one of those webby irc clients, and then we can race to Godwin again.
