Linking to AskMe from MeFi February 5, 2005 12:41 AM   Subscribe

Hey, why is there no link to askmetafilter on 'the blue' as you metatalk hipsters call the main page? You have to click metatalk and then click askme. FIX IT

So it SHOULD BE FIXED VERY SOON.

'AnnounceFilter'? Lame-o.
'TellMetafilter' (aka 'TellMe')? Rock steady!

Matt, while you are FIXING THINGS, Ask is currently called Announce Metafilter in the title bar. Could you rename the pony and give it some hay? PLEASE?
posted by sebas at 2:31 AM on February 5, 2005

like the red (burgundy?).
posted by andrew cooke at 3:00 AM on February 5, 2005

The red's nice, yeah, but I'm serious about how clunky 'Announce Metafilter' sounds. 'Tell Metafilter' I'm tellin' you!

(I think it was dhartung's idea, as I recall.)
posted by stavrosthewonderchicken at 3:34 AM on February 5, 2005

Agreed, tell metafilter sounds much better. And I withdraw my earlier statements, no more than 1 MeTa post per year should be allowed if it'll make people search the archives before asking this yet again.

fvw: one a YEAR!?
posted by delmoi at 4:39 AM on February 5, 2005

I think 1 metapost per month is quite enough.

Hmmm, red is good.

Huh, what are the rules for anounce/tellme?
posted by delmoi at 5:01 AM on February 5, 2005

I think announce will be once a week. (That is, if you look at the super secret unguessable Announce Metafilter page Matt put up)

A new pony! Woot!
And another vote for Tell v Announce.

Ponies:
Easy one to code would be to put a marker (say a little red 'x') next to closed threads - it would save us clicking on them when we want to contribute.
posted by dash_slot- at 5:55 AM on February 5, 2005

Oh, I love the red. And yeah, TellMe sounds much smoother.
posted by John Kenneth Fisher at 6:01 AM on February 5, 2005

Mmmm. TellMe. Love it.

And delmoi ... are you kidding me?

Echoing others, the red is nice.

So I assume this means the new sections are coming before a redesign. Is the redesign even going to happen, or will the extra links just be added above the topbar, like in the image Matt posted? I guess only Matt can really say.

I don't like "Tell MetaFilter" at all, but "Announce Filter" is pretty clumsy.

It's for announcing new projects, anyone got any better ideas? Keep in mind the full name, not the cutesy shortcut one.

Meta Tell

Or, TellMe?
posted by carter at 8:31 PM on February 5, 2005

"Tell MetaFilter" doesn't make sense to me. It's for announcing out to all the members you've launched a new project. "Tell MetaFilter" sounds like a secret you're sharing into MetaFilter's ear or something.

And I think I've been crystal clear that cutesy shortcuts (FPP, MeTa, etc) just get in the way of actually communicating concepts to people, so I'm frowning on "TellMe" because it sounds like another cute nickname and the full name for it doesn't make any obvious sense.

Nicknames bad, descriptive names good. We can come up with shortened versions if need be, but focusing on the nickname first and foremost is the wrong approach.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:44 PM on February 5, 2005

I'm not sure if comments will be allowed on project posts, but if they are, how about something like 'feedback'? This sounds more like a two-way, interactive process than 'announce.' People sometimes post questions to AskMe anyway, trying to get opinions on things they're designing, and trying to avoid self-linking.
