I don't get the point of posting this kind of thread any more than I do public resignations (email would do), but while it's here, I'll add that I've learned so much from this damn site. Thanks, Matt and Jessamyn, and to everyone over the years who's donated time and effort to create and maintain this thing. Warts and all, MeFi is still one of the most consistently fascinating spots on the Web.

I really like this place. A lot. Despite the occasional dissension, this place is filled with engaging and intelligent discourse that I sometimes contribute to. Other times, I just talk nonsense. But the bottom line is that it's a balance between the users and the admin.
The admin is just one guy (well, recently with a helper who's pretty cool too) who really cares about what happens here, is human, makes mistakes, and more often than not, is willing to listen to and respond to criticism.
Your work here is appreciated.

The concern is the loss of the Metafilter "personality". Some of it is the influx of nameless new users. Some of it is the draconian moderation of late. I'm not sure what exactly is different, or why, or how to fix it, but there is something different here. We've lost some good people of late, and clearly something is up. I just hope mathowie acknowledges that and doesn't let this place become generic, faceless, and boring.

Matt, thanks for manning the trenches the last five years.
Jessamyn, thanks for coming to the fore when the artillery barrage is at its worst.
Metafilter will never be perfect, but it's always remained a strong community, and that's only because of the hard work you guys do. I've seen first-hand the carnage wrought by poor site administration. I don't envy you guys, and even when there's a misstep or two, I know that it's largely what you do that keeps the place from self-destructing.
There are cynics who say otherwise, but I truly believe that keeping your morale high is key to calm, rational, and effective moderation.
You both should be proud of what MetaFilter has become, and remains: one of the most properly praised community sites on the entire web. This is a risky final aside, but I really believe -- and I've been a member of scores of internet communities since the days of bang paths -- it's only surpassed by The WELL. There are smaller communities that are finer in their own way, but none of them has the breadth found here. It's survived the re-lurking of major personalities, and I think it will continue to survive and thrive. Much of that is the unique blend of personalities, wit, knowledge, and even soul, but it would not have come together like this if it were managed differently.

More support here for matt and jessamyn.
And for reference, I don't think most of us newbies are brown-nosing. We're thanking matt because we actually do, amazingly enough, like the site. That may explain why we all paid $5 to join. I'm sure there are lots of new folks to MeFi who don't like the site, but odds are high that because they don't like the site they haven't joined, so you aren't going to hear too many of their voices here.

There is no one here that does not like the site. There are people here, and some who were here until recently, that felt they would no longer like the site. You see the difference? #1 has a good bit of my money. This site is not purely about quality mefi links and quality askme answers. It is far more subtle than that. That indescribable quality is what makes this place worthwhile. With the current trajectory, none of us will feel like coming here in time. The bleeding is too much. The essence of mefi must be preserved. That is "our" complaint and concern.

I hope that wasn't directed at me, because I'm not disagreeing with you, and most of that doesn't relate to what I wrote anyway. I was just pointing out that the fact that more newbies are saying "Thanks Matt" and not "Fuck you Matt" is not an example of brown-nosing, it's a statistically predictable result of the fact that people who like the site join. Sure, some will join, then come to dislike it, and complain. That's why it's not a 100% proposition. But saying all the newbies are brownnosing because they're thanking Matt is just silly. That's all I was saying.
And, if that wasn't directed at my comment, then, uh, never mind.

I apologize, but it was. The limit of new users being happy with the radical changes in policy means we are talking about a very new, and very different metafilter.
If you are ok with that, that is one stance. Few of us with a puppet or two below 15,000 feel this is the right thing. Metafilter, without the nonsensical idiots that have been here forever, is not metafilter. That is our position.
Respect your elders.

Oh, for christ's sake, shut it. You get the 17 threads bitching about stuff, we get this. Zip it.
Is it really nessisary to snap at people like that? I think that you'll find it isn't an effective way to control people.
There's nothing wrong with thanking matt, but attacking everyone who dosn't, or who dosn't do it in "your" thread rather then "their" thread isn't good for the community. The last thing this site needs authoritarian/libertarian moderation-style war.

People do generally like mathowie and jessamyn, we simple have concerns. Deleting this thread would be a bit much.
However, on principal, we should make this thread a candidate for closure.

Surely not. Nonetheless, a little balance never hurts and gosh knows there's been enough threads about the Fascist Regime Destroying Metafilter which are pretty painful for many of us. You probably know there's a lot of appreciation for your work, but it makes us feel better to know you know.
So this thread is really all about us...

What you do
Still betters what is done. When you speak, sweet,
I'd have you do it ever; when you sing,
I'd have you buy and sell so; so give alms;
Pray so; and, for the ordering your affairs,
To sing them too: when you do dance, I wish you
A wave o' the sea, that you might ever do
Nothing but that; move still, still so, and own
No other function: each your doing,
So singular in each particular,
Crowns what you are doing in the present deeds,
That all your acts are queens.

"I like it" is not an argument. It's an opinion. Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one. Your opinion and the word "Nope," tossed out to 20K-odd people, constitutes a zero-contribution to a discussion - any discussion. You might as well walk in and declare: "I have an asshole! You're wrong!" If you're just noting that you have a user# under 15K and like the iron-fisting, then note DramaMama's use of the word "few," not to be confused with "none."

Anyways, I was simply pointing out in a brief manner that change was good, after taking offense at theatrical matriarch's diffisive and unsubstantiated generalising. In fact most of us in the 14K took offense at the comment.

Haha! Well met! I think DramaMama's generalization is actually extensively documented over the past couple of weeks of MeTa, but then, I'm a MeTa whore.
I dunno about the assertion that "change is good," all on its own like that. It seems not only likely to crush a couple of toes, but self-contradictory, to join a community (rather) late, and then declare that change is good. Something about the way it was before led you to join. Why immediately embrace whatever it might become?
Your attitude, however, is one well suited to adapt and survive. Whether change is good or not, it is inevitable. The opposite assertion, that statis is good, is completely unsustainable, eventually.
Sorry for the grumpiness. Unsupported grumpiness is worse than unsupported opinion :)

Sometimes, yes. But I felt that this thread, especially the "take it somewhere else if you don't like it" disclaimer was almost a passive-aggressive attack at the 'revolutionary' faction, and not really do anything to make things better here.
If it had been phrased a little differently, it would have been a lot better.
Matt has done a great job running this site for years, and I'd like to thank him and offer some advice. The best course of action to make a community site is to remember that actions have effects beyond the most obvious. Deleting a comment does a lot more then simply removing it from the page.

I'd like to thank Mathowie and Jessamyn for fostering controversy - at various times over the years, MetaTalk has, for me, made more amusing reading than the site proper, and their recent actions have really spiced things up.
Genuine thanks also, of course - one's Britishness makes one wary of induction into the OBN.

one cannot help but love mathowie and jessamyn. imagining them together. hanging out. a bit of alcohol. we are there, and we appeal to both in that uncertain, drunken way. mathowie and jess kiss. jess wants you too. jess lure mathowie in. it's ugly, it's erotic, it defies everything you thought was right. mathowie's wife wants in next time. this is not for the metafilter at large...
