Death to Embedded Media. Firefox extension for all you Embedded Media Whiners. [via LinkFilter.net]
Every time I try to download and install a 'non-approved' or 'non-authorized' or 'non-blessed-by -Firefox' extension it hoses my browser.

The new Download Actions panel coming in Firefox 1.1 might just make this extension irrelevant.
fixedgear: this extension is also available on Mozilla Update. But I'm guessing that something is wrong with your profile for you to be seeing that behavior-- or perhaps you were just unlucky with trying to install a few extensions that conflict with some others you already had.

odinsdream writes "Something tells me this won't work with flash-based embedded video players... those are the worst of all."
There's a flash-blocking extension, called (surprise!) Flashblock. You could also I suppose modify mediaplayer connectivity to download the .swf file to somewhere other than your temp directory.
And apparently there's also a firefox extension specifically for metafilter.

orthogonality, are you indeed the developer of that extension?

Unfortunately this doesn't really solve any of the big problems. The clip is still streaming, which means [buffering] that you still have to [buffering] wait for [buffering] the [buffering] clip. All this really does is grok the source for the URL of the media clip, then cuts and pastes it into your media player.

So,
1. This extension was developed by someone with the handle 'orthogonal'.
2. You say that you try to get the same handle when you can.
3. You commented on the extension here within 24 hours of it being listed on extensionmirror.nl, on the low-traffic announce board, not the main list.
4. You didn't answer my question directly.
Interesting, no?

not really. it's metatalk, in the comments, not an FPP, and he's not offering anything for sale, for fuck's sake. whether or not orthogonality developed some plugin really doesn't seem that important. at. all.

fake, I'm not talking about the breaking of the self-linking ethos, I'm talking about the providing of un-reviewed code to a community.
And I'm curious as to the reasons why orthogonality would distance himself so much from code he wrote--if that is indeed the case.
I try not to use code presented to me in unusual circumstances.
