Connection timeout members March 14, 2005 9:02 AM   Subscribe

A little bug on the front page. Top right reads "Connection Timeout members | You are logged in as ..." or merely "Connection Timeout members" if I'm not logged in.

Yeah, searching is your friend.

fvw says (in the other thread in plutor's search link): "Odd that you couldn't find it in the archives, I'm pretty sure this has been discussed before."

There's nothing else there. What's wrong with someone asking a question in the appropriate place? I saw the Connection Timeout bug too, but it didn't seem to cause any real problems so I let it slide.

It's probably a pretty dangerous culture to foster to continually quash honest bug-related questions with comments that basically read "Uh, you're a dummy. Use the [rather broken] search function and go away."

What if an actually dangerous bug arises and no one questions it in MeTa because they're afraid of being called an idiot?

Bad, bad culture. No donut.

search it, if it's been noted before you can assume that problem is known. I don't see how that simple procedure can cause dangerous bugs going unnoticed. Good culture. Have some agar.

I was talking about questions in general. These questions generally aren't bad things, it's generally minimal noise, and not much real estate consumed. It's not like we have someone asking every day (or even every week or month) what the periods are for in DeathFilter threads, or what the PepsiBlue joke is, or pancakes, or anything like that.

Compared to other community sites, MeTa has an astoundingly low level of noise, especially considering there's no (visible) back channel and everything in-site is right up front, not nested 10 levels back down some god-forsaken tree.

Anyways, it seems to me - considering this (relatively) low level of noise - that it behooves us to not foster this "That's a dumb question" culture.

There could easily be a (relatively, hypothetical) dangerous bug that's spotted by multiple people but isn't pointed out by them in MeTa for fear of having someone call them a dummy for asking a dumb question.

In the interest of fostering openness, learning, growth, etc: There are no dumb questions.

It means the database server's load is too high. As long as the rest of the page loads, ignore it.

seanyboy : "What's a dumb question?"

What does that '.' stand for, anyway?
Who's this 'mathowie' character who's always running around like he owns the place?
