FanFare AutoBoost thought for your consideration
How about adding a 'trigger' that moves a movie to the top of the page when it goes to streaming. And other "life events" in the career of any particular media. Perhaps when a book is turned into another form (see Like Water for Chocolate ballet) which is also a film, (hmm needs an opera:)
The easiest initial implementation would be a place to insert a release date for theater->streaming, not sure how to auto-populate but we can research that. Mostly for blockbusters but that does seem to be a preponderance of films on the lavender.
Right Post at the Right Time
I had a pretty terrible yesterday and a somewhat grumpy today. Towards the end of my work shift I switched tabs over to MetaFilter and I saw Wordshore's delightful post on the new Animal Crossing game. And it's cheered me right up. Something was just right about this post and it hit me at the right time. I thought I'd share my joy and gratitude about that here. Feel free to share your own stories of posts that hit you at the right time. Maybe its the linked subject or the comments, but something just worked and it made your day like this one made mine. Thank you Wordshore. :)
Links to comments from front page: a pony request
On the front page, the link that says "n comments" actually goes to the top of the post. For longer posts, especially on mobile, that can be a good ways away from the first comment. Can this link point to the first comment - or, since that might be deleted, to the byline at the end of the post? [more inside]
Blue posts for deep sea green posts should link to deep sea green posts
On August 27, avoision made a self-post on the deep sea green about his Villanelle Bot.
On August 30, oakroom made a post about the Vinalle Bot on the blue, but didn’t go through projects when posting the link. Because of this, there’s no “official” indication that the two are linked: no highlighting on Projects, no little link to the project at the end of the FPP.
I think if a mod discovers the link post-facto or if a mefite tells the mod about the link, they should add these formal connections. It seems like good style, and a good way to increase attention for community members doing cool things. [more inside]

Let’s Encourage and Help Folks Make Their First Posts
Over the past few months, we’ve talked about ways to encourage first (or second or third) time posters and help you/them become more comfortable with posting to Metafilter. I propose we spend September helping new posters successfully make the leap into the wonderful world of FPPs. [more inside]
What's the worst post you posted on the blue?
Lipstick Thespian points out that my latest post about clothes is "absolutely the dumbest thing I've ever read on Metafilter." They've got a point! I admit I've posted some real stinkers in my time that I would gladly take back. So I'm wondering, what are some things that you yourself have posted, that in retrospect you would take back, and why? When is it OK to post an update to an open thread?
Apologies if this comes off as test-post-ish, but I am wondering if there are any unwritten guidelines around when it is OK to post an update on the blue, particularly if there was a former post about the subject and that post is still open. [more inside]
Sidebar box with links to open political threads?
Election season idea: could a small box get added to the sidebar highlighting the open politics threads, below The Deck ad and above the sidebar? An opt-out (or opt-in option) could also be available. [more inside]
Just say no to multiple paragraphs
I think using multiple paragraphs on the front page clutters it up and makes it more difficult to instantly identify the end of one post and the beginning of another. For example. This is why [more inside] exists, no?
How many links or questions are on the front page?
Is there a set number of links/questions on the front page of Metafilter and AskMetafilter? [more inside]
I DIDN'T TOUCH ANYTHING, I SWEAR!
Front page rendering oddly.... [more inside]
Why is this minor technical issue important?
I'm having a hard time understanding why a public relations missive from a mainstream corporate band about a minor technical issue is somehow worthy of inclusion on the front page of MetaFilter.
Posts where each letter is a link
Do users still post in the blue with words where each letter is a different link? [more inside]
Bigger Front Page?
Why is the front page the size it is? [more inside]
The Blue is Broken?
Is it just me, or has the Blue been replaced by a default apache loading page?
Easy link to favorites
I'm hoping this is a tiny pony request. Size of the cuddlier guide horses, p'raps. It is this: a [+] tag on the dateline of mefi front page posts. Clicking the [+] would add a link to one's Favourites tab.
Headlines cause confusion
PonyFilter: CDC Recommends... what?
It is obvious when you open the post because the headline is shown, but in the front page, it is just confusing... Can the headline be included on the front page, or can there be a note in the posting page that the headline is not shown on the FP, and shouldn't be used as part of the post summary

Streaming music problem
Music: Feature or Bug? When I try streaming a song from the front page, as soon as I scroll past it or flip to a different browser tab, it stops playing. If I load the song's individual page and stream it from there, it contines to play until I close it (even as I type this MeTa post in another tab, for example).
Connection timeout members
A little bug on the front page. Top right reads "Connection Timeout members | You are logged in as ..." or merely "Connection Timeout members" if I'm not logged in.
Ads on MetaFilter.
AskMe Front Page
Given that Ask Metafilter had 40 questions posted yesterday (more than the number of posts to Metafilter proper, in fact), would it be possible to see more than 25 questions on the front page at a time? It seems kind of silly to have to go to the archives for questions posted earlier during the same day. Adjunct question: how's the server holding up under the onslaught of posts?
What is the consensus regarding posting images to the front page?
What is the consensus regarding posting images to the front page? I don't have issue with it, I am just wondering. I find no mention of it in the guidelines, but I never see it happen....
Comment Count Mismatch
Front page lists more comments than are actually in the thread. As of this writing there are 13 comments, according to the front page, but the inside page only shows eight.
what do people think about pushing the TextAds beyond the home page
So if TextAds were so successful, what do people think about pushing the TextAds beyond the home page to the top of the main MeFi links of the day? That would allow for a lot more impressions, maybe at a slightly cheaper rate than the homepage ad rate?
I've enjoyed following the links from the TextAds more often than not, so I'm all for more, as long as they stay relatively high quality (I suppose Matt's the ultimate arbiter in this case.)

can anyone else not log in?
can anyone else not log in? i'm getting the "This main page is currently being rendered as a static page . . . if you're logged in, you'll be able to comment" message on the front page. so i log in, and it takes me to "Thanks for logging in, you're now ready to jump directly to the index page," which i do, but it still says i'm not logged in. i've tried refreshing, but that doesn't work, either. any advice?
Love the powered-by bar on the front page.
That new "powered-by" bar is c00l! but it overlaps with the sideblog (on pages that are shorter than the sideblog).
teeny-weeny glitch with the sort feature
Another teeny-weeny gltich with the sort feature. I had mine set for "most comments". When I went to look at a page and came back, it was still set to most comments although the dropdown menu now says date (my previous setting). This persists through refreshes.
Either "most comments" is sticky and it's not supposed to be (i.e., the menu is right but the URL is wrong), or the dropdown is reverting to the previous setting spontaneously.
As I say, the teeny-weeniest of buglets. (Oh, IE5/MacOS 9.0.4)

Sessioning should be fixed now, I think.
I think I fixed the sessioning. I reworked a lot of code tonight, and tested it, and I think I got it working correctly. Here's what's going on: you come to metafilter for the first time today, it says 3 new links and 24 new comments. You read the site, hitting the index page as many times as you want, and you'll never lose that 3 links and 24 comments status.
then you go away for a few hours, and you come back. it should say "1 new link and 13 new comments" (if that much changed between visits), and it should remain that way until you go away for over 15 minutes.
Now, the only place where this will be screwed up, is when you hit the site within 15 minutes from your last visit. That way, the session won't die and it won't update your last visit time.
I also got rid of the new window thing, and the double arrow things, since you won't lose state if you jump directly into a thread.
Let me know if you find any problems.

ColdFusion error on the front page
Anyone else getting a ColdFusion error when they try to view the front page in Netscape? It works fine for me with IE, but not Netscape. Could the applet be causing this?

Revisiting main page causes delays
This is a speed question. I can go from MF's homepage to it's underlying pages without any delay. Click, and I'm there. However, going back to the homepage is always difficult, and takes at least two times longer. Is there some kind of 'no cache' thing working on it?
