New York Meetup April 15, 2005 7:47 PM   Subscribe

Where are you? We're at the NYC meetup! And I'm taking the JONMC SAYS HI opportunity to pop my Grey-cherry. Jon says I look like prospero. In attendance are: jonmc, vidiot, amberglow, adampsyche, cunninglinguist, SmartDalek, lilboo, chicobangs, naxosaxur, bingo, dame, ursus comitas, hellbient, TNLNYC, and a few "real" people. I might've left someone out. Sorry if I did. (is this the first post AT a meetup?)

Have a drink for me. Have several, in fact. Just make it something other than Korean beer.

(But what with monju_bosatsu's nub waving like it just don't care, and furtive's superkinky beer and all, I think the real party's back here!)

hi folks. I'm only a borough away, but only just got home, so couldn't make it this time. Are you still at the magician?
posted by mdn at 9:15 PM on April 15, 2005

I should have written down for you, like I said.

The Magician is empty now. A big posse of mefites went in search of ye mythical smoky bar. And the rest of us split up on our various ways home.

Pictures, quite naturally, to follow. I didn't think to bring my camera, so you'll get none from me. Plenty of me, though; I think I'm in about half the pictures taken.

Chico et al, for those of you looking for my brand-new serial fiction, you'll find it here [warning: eGREGIOUS SELF-LINK. Do not click if you are pregnant or a midget]. Read in good health, and good humor.

Thanks to everyone who came out tonight (except naxosaxur, my sworn enemy) for making my first meetup a memorable one. I was really impressed by the attendance; I had no idea so many people would decide at the last minute to come when they heard I would be present. I'm really honored, youse guys.

I'm bummed now. The show was great, but damn.

First follow-up...although quite unexciting :( but, enjoy!

(didn't get snaps of nearly everyone including dame, chicobangs, amberglow, vidiot, hellibent, etc...etc...but I *do* know that there are plenty more snaps taken aside from mine. Patience, please!
posted by naxosaxur at 12:13 AM on April 16, 2005

Thanks, naxo! The rest of you: Wake from from your blearyeyed, debauched and sodden slumber and post more pix now, dammit!

Remember, the first rule of Meetup is "drink locally, post globally".

Okay, fun-havers, it's the next day. Time to start uploading those pictures. I know y'all chipped in to have the NBC tower flash a shout out to squirrel. I can't wait to see it. Post your URLs here or in a new MeTa thread, yo.

Jon says I look like prospero.

Well, in that case, perhaps it's a good thing I didn't show--the resulting confusion might've been too much for the rest of you to take.

I thought about coming in from Jersey for this one, but ended up going to a Bill Frisell concert last night instead. Maybe I can make the rumored meetup in May.

what Cunning said

it was really fun, and very well attended, and we're all in an NYU student film now. the smoking bar was Karma, up the block from DBA, and it's where we should have the next meetup

posted by amberglow at 9:42 AM on April 16, 2005

also what cunning said.

hopefully karma has my wallet, cause I don't. If anyone picked up a black and pink wallet with a lot of useless crap in it - let me know.

and here I thought my "student film" days were well behind me - I knew I got rid of the implants way too early, damn

posted by amberglow at 12:04 PM on April 16, 2005

Would Mr. Convy find The Frying Pan condescending, or perhaps he enjoys "slumming it"?
Did anyone else see Waldo last night at Karma, or was it the Drano?
posted by hellbient at 12:13 PM on April 16, 2005

Coochie Coochie. Too mad Charo won't be able to bring her ex-husband Xavier Cugat with her. Cos MeFi like to mambo...

And oh yeah, I got the pastrami. Mom-in-law will be very happy.
posted by jonmc at 12:14 PM on April 16, 2005

Just for future reference, stumbling into Ray's at 2 a.m. for a slice after a meetup is a bad, bad idea. You get nasty 'za and ruin your nice butter colored suede jacket by unwittingly spilling grease all down the side. Jon, you should have brought us the pastrami so we could have fallen upon it like wild dogs.
posted by CunningLinguist at 12:27 PM on April 16, 2005

it was the Drano -- boo cunning and jon!

Jesus Damon grew up a couple towns away from me and went to the same college as dame. We regaled her with tales of this bizarre former workplace of mine that features animatronic dairy products that sing bluegrass songs.

Did you notice they have birthday parties there, Jon? I was born in December. You were born in December. Amberglow, too. I see a birthday meetup in Connecticut. With anamatronic dairy products. Glorious.

Hey, New Yawkers: It looks like Mr. taz and I will probably/maybe/I think finally be making the big puddle jump to visit New Orleans this summer or early fall...

Because I want to wring every little bit of U.S. joy I can out of the pilgrimage, I'm going to see if I can plan it so that we fly into New York, and then fly or AmTrak to New Orleans from there (AmTrak because it would be fun, but I need to work out money/logistics etc., blah, blah.)

So, do you have any idea how much it would cost for a hotel room in Manhattan for a night two, as cheap as reasonably possible? I'd ask in AskMe, but I've blown my wad on a birthday cake. (Eww)
