FARK! April 24, 2005 9:07 PM Subscribe
I thought it was generally agreed that images in FPPs are a bad thing. So it seems to me that a Fark post tag on an FPP would be even worse.
Yeah, an "[obvious]" would have worked just as well and not gotten the wadded panties.

I think we all need to admit that fark is MeFi's idiot cousin that we all pretend to hate, but really secretly admire for his heroic oafishness.

Call me whatever you want, but I think it's somehow fitting that a Fark tag got put on a post that sinks to Fark's level of political discourse (ie, "I'm right, you're wrong, and I have STFU NOOB threadbombs to prove it").
As much as I dislike some parts of y2karl's Iraqfilter posts (see my previous MeTa threads), I do have to give him(?) credit for posting well-researched FPPs that connect a variety of things in a sometimes non-obvious way. In contrast this is a single-link newsfilter FPP that was obviously posted to further an agenda. It's good to know, but this sort of thing is why I read DailyKos, not MeFi.

Few things:
One, this guy knows better, so he was obviously trying to stir the pot (it's Sunday).
Two, it worked. Check out the poster's profile and history. Political posts are not new territory; he was looking for "etiquette-related" comments, and he got it. And now he's got a MeTa to boot.
Third, I think the flagging method is working; mathowie is probably just not being obvious about it. Flag it and move on. This was egregious enough that by the time I wake up tomorrow, it'll be gone because so many people will complain.
On preview: PurplePorpoise was far more succinct than me.

Good lord. This is about as unimportant an "issue" as I can imagine. Chill out.

Communities define themselves by what they solecisms they reject. If someone posts a fark tag, we have to raise a fuss for fear outside observers might think we think ourselves no better than fark.com.
We have to prove we're more subtle, more erudite, more intellectual; than fark, and we'll do so even if that requires ranting and raving about an 252-byte image.
Because it's the principle of the thing, dammit.
(Please to ignore real world crises while fulminating against farkisms.)

Look, I think it is pretty simple.
If you want FARK and it's style, and it's discourse, then go to FARK. The URL is even much shorter.
Trying to turn MeFi into FARK is misguided, inefficient, and a mistake.
Also, P_G is not a newbie, and has several posts under his belt. He knew better.
And, you'll notice the image has been removed from the main page, so I think the site operator has made his opinion clear on this topic.

Ynoxas writes "Trying to turn MeFi into FARK is misguided, inefficient, and a mistake."
P_G wasn't trying to "turn Mefi into FARK". He made a little joke.
Would I like to see fark-style tags regularly? No.
Can their infrequent use produce a chuckle or an insight? Yes.
Is the first use of a tag worth bitching and moaning about? No.
Think of it like an April Fool's joke: the first guy to do it is clever, but if someone imitated him everyday, it would get old quick. But the first time you see it, you should grin and congratulate P_G on his cleverness, rather than worrying about April Fool's becoming a daily event.
Just relax. It's a web site, not the Library of Alexandria.
