Careful, mathowie, or people will start thinking it's OK to have fun on MeTa. That's twice this week.

I know most people know this, but to the poster: it looks grey on some screens, and brown on others. It looked completely brown on my last computer (desktop mac), and looks sort of greyish brown on this one (mac laptop), but on the PC at school it looked completely grey, so the range is pretty significant.

mdn: You forgot to point out that if you squint really hard, MeTa looks black. And if you look away from your monitor, it'll look a lot like the room you're sitting in.

It shouldn't look brown on anyone's screen. You don't have to live with incorrect color or incorrect color calibration. For those who don't know anything about it: the color of the lighting environment you're in, the color temperature your monitor is set to, the intrinsic characteristics of your monitor and video card, the user-controllable settings of both, and any color-correction profiling software you're using all will work together to determine the color of your display.
But a lot of people don't care. My friend uses two monitors, an LCD and a CRT side-by-side. I don't even think they're set at the same color temperature. I've asked him: are those set at the same color temperature? "I don't know". It would drive me crazy to have a dual-display system, next to each other, with the colors wildly (to my eye) different. But lots of folks don't care.
However, if you don't care, then you shouldn't be concerned that MeTa looks brown instead of gray.
Hmm. Here's a hint to XP users using the default theme: if you can't see that the background color behind the "File / Edit" and contiguous areas of your window shade subtly, left to right, from a very light off-white to a somewhat darker off-white, then your system isn't correctly calibrated.
And don't get me started on NTSC TV display calibration. Just get the DVD Video Essentials, which is like the coolest thing, evar. Really, it is. If you're a geek.

I thought there were mostly USians on this site, and yet not one person has mentioned that the preferred spelling here is "gray", not "grey". Instead, you're all just horsing around like a bunch of toddlers on a sugar rush.
