I'd like to give a thanks to the new "your link has been found in another post" feature, and a pox to those people who don't use tags.

To "give" someone a pox you have to have a pox, yourself. Ew.

Now what's this new feature, here? The post submission form has always searched old posts for the URL you try to submit. Is it also searching comments, now, or what?

Wouldn't this be better if it were discussed on IRC?

You still don't really understand the whole MeTa "thing" do you?

Tags are lame.

It's old, been around for 3-4 years.

Well I believe this is a new feature, that was implimented along with the insta-preview feature, and I'm giving a thumbs up, and asking that people add tags.

It hasn't been around for 3-4 years, unless it's prone to malfunction, because it let my engrish post through for one thing.

Uh, Citizen Premier , dude - you're telling the guy who codes the site that he's wrong about when he implemented it?

matt-- I love the new "Bold" and "Italics" features that I can use to change the way my text looks! I don't have to remember HTML or anything!

I was thinking about a new tag-related feature and it is probably on-topic here:

Couldn't we let a FPP Tags list be editable by any logged user? My reasoning is that correctly classifying any given piece of data is a very hard job (the main job of a librarian is not, as it may appear sometimes, to keep teenagers quiet in a book-filled room, but to correctly "tag" each book, magazine, article etc, so that information can be retrieved quickly). As the userbase grows, it is doubtful that the average user will be able to correctly tag his/her post (and more doubtful that he/she will be able to do it correctly and completely). I understand that it would leave the tags open to trolling, but it probably can be minimized by registering the user responsible for any addition or deletion (and banning the mistaggers) and by the collaborative dynamic itself (Wikipedia suffers this same problem, but the users quickly correct any attack).

I'm perfectly happy to admit ignorance on that, being a relative noob. What is the whole "MeTa 'thing'" that makes this inappropriate? It's about the site, isn't it?
posted by solotoro at 11:02 AM on July 28, 2005

it's not inappropriate at all--people are just being bitches.

Fortunately, that sort of thing only happens on days that end in "y".

Being bitches, that is - not grabbing popcorn.

I agree tags should be mandatory.

Take it to SportsFilter, Cranberry. No seriously, we need you.

So now that we're giving thanks to features, can we just get on with it and make a golden Matt or something to dance naked around? And chant?

You mean you're not all already naked?
posted by bshort at 1:07 PM on July 28, 2005

Of course we are. The thing is that we would be dancing, too...

And yea, bickering with #1 about site features == hilarious. I feel kinda like I'm on SomethingAwful. "Thread--SUBSCRIBED!"
