Just thought I'd give a heads up for some of the newer folks, as this young fellow mentioned it in his comment.

I just love it when someone takes a piddling complaint in a MeFi thread -- like a backhanded comment to some schmuck to knock off with the name-tagging already -- and makes a big production of it by bringing it into MeTa, where sure as hell, they get thoroughly mocked for being so foolish.

It's even better when another schmuck who apparently lives in a time warp finally figures out that the piddling complaint came after the MeTa callout, all jinxy-like.

Nonetheless, the mocking is way cool.

The first rule of Metatalk is never to post to it.

I'm just stunned that anyone with even half a brain could miss the fact that *no one* signs front page posts with their user name and then go ahead and sign a front page post with their user name.

The mind boggles at the shallowness of reading required to pull that off here.

I think it's a holdover from writing email all day. Once I wrote a long, detailed answer in MetaTalk and instinctively signed it

Matt

at the bottom, like I do in email dozens of times each day. Someone called me on it and I edited it out, but yeah, if you're writing email all day (esp. if you use webmail) and you have ten browser windows open and you leave a comment here sometimes you might accidentally do it.

Aha.. So it's an email thing? Yeah, that makes sense. I've always wondered where that habit might come from, as I don't know of any forums where one has to sign posts/comments. I never sign my emails, my .sig does that for me, so that never crossed my mind.
posted by dabitch at 11:21 PM on July 29, 2005

While we're at it, can we do something to eliminate those signature files that people use in their e-mails that include their sign-off, which they forget about, so you see:
Blah blah blah. Nice chatting with you.

It's annoying, sure, but it's not like this is the first time someone's done this. Your metatalk complaint will scroll off the page and meander into the forest of time and a week from now someone will sign their post and then where will we be? We'll be right here, being reminded of a Chinese saying - "in Sichuan, dogs bark at the sun".

I dunno about that - your example shows that it is unlikely, i.e. you don't sign off your email with "mathowie", and I kinda doubt "brandz" is the usual way william o'brien signs off on his.

Other than that, I agree with Vanilla Ice - who can argue with dancing cats.
