There have been a lot of comments here about MeFi posts that people didn't like, but only a few, off-hand remarks about posts people did like. I think I know what a really bad post is -- but what's a really good one?

i really liked the liquor threads. i like any thread which is interesting, or which is both interesting and invites comentary; interesting is the thing.

Here, too? I mean, that makes good sense. But no doubt people thought some of the 9/11-related threads were better than others. And some of the light-hearted, isn't-this-cool posts were probably better than others.

I wonder if talking about them here would help figure out how to encourage the good ones. Maybe even (dare I hope?) those people who seem to resent certain types of posts on MeFi could see why other people like them. Or defend what they think is good for once, instead of attacking what they think's bad.

P.S. the tagline under the MetaFilter logo as I Preview this happens to read: we're all in this together.

I like it all, even the bad stuff.

It's because it's mostly things I otherwise wouldn't see (not being a quality a-lister) and thus my life is enriched.

Seriously, I have gained a small (very small) reputation for cool based almost entirely of MeFi links.

If you're talking about comments, rather than front-page posts, I've been really impressed with hipstertrash. His first comment in the Stile kitty thread was particularly memorable, especially since it was one of his first posts here.

This is a great thread that grew from a decent post (miguelcardoso's women-in-islam post). (I've been meaning to point that thread out here on MeTa.) The discussion there is top-notch.

I think that owillis's Robert Johnson post was a good one: Very current, probably overlooked by most mainstream media, points to a much larger topic that makes for great discussion.

I also liked mathowie's Jakob post, and no, I'm not (just) kissing up.

Anyone who's the least bit familiar with my tendency to go off on tangents will probably nod their head at this, but I tend to be way more interested in the comments and discussion in the thread than the post itself, to the extent that I sometimes give the link a miss entirely.

(*holds out wrists for a good slapping*)

I spent about 10 minutes looking throough recent front page posts, and though I found a lot that were clearly ungood (or even double-plus-ungood), none really caught my eye as outstanding. Formatting them properly, and maybe asking a reasonably open-ended question (that demands more than a yes/no answer) is de rigeur, I think, but after that, I twig mostly just on topics that are hot triggers for me, or that I find somehow interesting.

So what's a good front page post, for me at least? One that interests me personally, that's not over-long or over-elaborate, and that more or less models itself on Matt's example on the post-a-link page. There are tons of those....If I had to choose an example, this might be one. Great fodder for a whole bunch of different discussions, even though it kinda went nowhere, and matthowie himself called 'double-post'.

I enjoyed the Polish posters post. The discussion was fruitful, yielding a number of interesting links to follow throughout the day.

I dug the fat people arguments, to be honest (including the two threads that I didn't start; this was the easy one to dig up).

I still have the good-Internet-radio thread bookmarked and I poke through it every few weeks for new sites.
