Hypothetically, would this kind of link be okay? October 8, 2001 12:45 PM   Subscribe

With the rash of self-links I thought of a quandary. What if someone has a web site that they own, but other people write articles (or take photos, or whatever) for it. The person then links to an article that he didn't write, but is hosted on his web site. Would it be a legitimate link? I would never do this, but I would hesitate to say "that's wrong".

It's still a self-link.

second that, rcade. As was said in another post, if it's so great, someone else will post it.

Let’s say he’s just providing the bandwidth (i.e., the other person’s site is separate from his own). In that case, it could be a self-link, but it isn’t necessarily.

For example, would you consider Matt linking to Fairvue.com a self-link (as I understand it, Fairvue is hosted by Matt)?

well, matt can self link all he wants. I'd say that if you're linking to a site that you maintain or write for, it's a self link.

if you own a server and you link to someone *once* I'd say it's a gray area and subject to matt's discretion. if you do it even twice, it becomes a pattern, and I'd say that the death penalty applies.

It was the only example I know of.

Here's what I say: If people want to go to your site, then they'll go to it from your profile. I don't have a site yet, but I plan to soon, and I plan to put it on my profile.
