I popped in to say this is stupid. October 15, 2001 7:06 PM   Subscribe

Is it really necessary to comment on threads you think are "stupid"? Surely it's better to "take it to Meta" if it bothers you that much or just ignore it.

the label stupid should come with a reason why one thinks it is stupid,(like credit cards and trailer parks and boob jobs) hence all in thread can see why the the little gem is stupid. stupid becomes, say, a higher issue. when contention comes, stupid is as stupid cant explain. besides, somethings cannot be ignored.

Go read some of jc's other comments. Like the "I will fight to the death for kitty.jpg" or whatever it was. And look at some of the links that he/she has posted. And um, I don't think this is such a big deal. meow.

Right, so I didn't mean this to be about jcterminal specifically, just that "he/she" (sigh) posted in that fashion in both those threads.
bargle, I have read a lot of jc's other comments. So what? There's no need to take a metatalk thread like this personally, especially not on someone else's behalf.

Yeah, well, everytime I get preachy or snide, I go right out and commit the sins I condemn. And if there was money to be made of hot air vented over the tiniest things done on this little blog, we'd all be rich! rich! I tells ya.

Although I do think whoever thought up the Windows key deserves capital punishment... I lose more stuff that way.

So what?

your suggestion "take it to meta" seemed like you were taking something seriously that didn't need to be taken seriously. that's all. perhaps i am wrong, perhaps random pointless comments hurt mf and should be done away with. i don't see what you mean by me taking it personally though. ::shrugs::
posted by bargle at 9:08 PM on October 15, 2001

that did not make any sense. what i meant was that i thought you took it seriously and were offended by it or something and i don't know that one can take any of his/her comments seriously (re: the kitty.jpg example).

and i also meant to say that perhaps i was wrong and you were just commenting on the random/useless comments that people post that do not add anything to a thread. or something. i can not think on this crap. anyway. i think that makes sense now.

Hmm. I think I was trying to suggest that it isn't very constructive to make "this is stupid" comments in a thread.
I don't understand what you mean by "taking something seriously".
I do understand "meow".

Wasn't JC just basically asking the poster why they would post something THEY thought was stupid? In the text of the post, the video is described as stupid.

"take it to metatalk"
the war cry of those with nothing interesting to post themselves. it's a way to get their very own thread. its the future of MeFi - people posting on metafilter, and people bitching about people on posting on metafilter posting on metatalk. 'scuse me whilst i vomit...

Mmmmmm. Right. Instead, we should simply self-police the community via telepathy.

As for people who have nothing interesting to post, we hardly need MetaTalk as a forum. Lately we have the front page for that.

the whole point of mefi has become self-policing. posting interesting links and discussing them is rapidly falling by the wayside. when its all policed and there's nobody left, you can discuss interesting links via telepathy.
posted by quonsar at 9:49 AM on October 17, 2001

Oh horseshit, quonsar. When interesting links get posted, people discuss them. When someone posts the nth link of the day to the cnn.com front page, yeah, it gets on people's nerves. But do people look forward to posting about it? Is there anyone so devoid of a life that they say "hot damn, my chance for a MetaTalk thread?" I doubt it.
