Been there/Done that:
A button so that if a significant number of readers mark a post as a duplicate or just really boring, etc. then your preferences filter it out. So if someone were to post AYBABTU again, annoyed readers would mark it, and those who came later wouldn't see it unless they turned off their filter.

Well, this is the part I think most people would disagree with. But there's no reason to filter things out, just put them in some smaller place.
Frankly, the light and minimal design of MeFi would have to go for some kind of columnar layout. That would suck.
Another approach is for everyone to create a MeFi client that grabs the RSS and applies an individual's own filter on the content... The unfortunate thing is that comments are RSS'd.

Not to put to fine a point on it, but I think that's a bad idea.
If 100 yutzes on MeFi think something is dull, that doesn't mean that I will. Unless there was a huge problem with piles and piles of irrelevant and crap posts, seems like a non-issue.

Well, maybe not an "irrelevant" button, but a "Doublepost" and "Self-Link" buttons would make sense. These could be arranged like the "This is Good" and "This is Porn" checkboxes on Filepile, where a supplemental comment is optional.

but wax-p, the only reason I'd want those indicators would be if I built an instant emailer to alert me to the potential doublepost or self-link.
I hesitate to display output like filepile, because like filepile, threads could simply become a debate over why someone clicked on one of the indicators.

Yeah, I don't like the way the meta-comments are displayed in-line, along with the actual comments. I think that a grouped status indicator next to each thread would work well enough to alert people... For example, something along the lines of:

we all know when something is a doublepost, though, so seeing that others also noticed that it's a double post does nothing... and if one doesn't know that it's a double post, then it's new to him so what's the point of such an indicator?
self-link on the other hand, is useful.

Not all double posts are immediately obvious. But there doesn't seem to be a big problem with double posts.
