Known issue: logged-out search not working right now
Quick heads up since a number of folks have noted/asked about this: yes, the search function for logged-out readers is currently not working. It throws up a complaint that is unhelpful but also not dangerous: "Unauthorized access to internal API. Please refer to...". We'll have it fixed soon, but just a heads up that (a) it is indeed a thing and (b) it's not something to worry about. Sorry about the annoyance!
Look, you're really cute, but I can't understand what you're saying...
"Looks like you're searching for an exact phrase. The local search doesn't do that so well. Be sure to try your search for "_____" at Google if you don't find what you're looking for here." Perhaps it's just my colorblind eyes, but I can't see anything other than the "deep space nine" link in the notice above my search results. Is there any chance the Big Dark Bar of Highlighting could be changed to a different color so the text stands out more effectively? Thank you!
Bing finds threads Google doesn't
FYI: Bing is finding old threads that Google is not. [more inside]
FTW
I wanted to point out a simply magnificent couple of comments about the Google Book Settlement by one of our members, grimmelm, or James Grimmelmann, as he’s know in the real world. [more inside]

Proposed: Remove MetaTalk from the Google index. [more inside]
Queries from the hive mind
I was experimenting with Google's search suggestions feature when I noticed that it gave some interesting results for "metafilter + [letter]". Since it returns the most popular search terms starting with that phrase, what you get for each letter is an A-Z listing of the most sought-after topics related to Metafilter. So without further ado, I give you... Metafilter A to Z. [more inside]
Play me off
Did I hallucinate a Metafilter comment? I remember reading the line "Play him hither, Lute Cat" on Metafilter recently and though it was so hilarious I needed to illustrate it. I wanted to give credit to the original commenter, but I can't for the life of me find the comment. All my styles of google-fu have failed me. Did this comment actually exist?
Google search instead of built-in search
How do I get Google search instead of built-in search on Ask MeFi? [more inside]
Why Yahoo Over Google?
Why does does mefi search use yahoo instead of google? I am not particularly interested in individual opinions of the two engines, I'd rather base answers on factual results.
OK, it was a link to a google search, but why delete??
Itchy trigger finger? I liked that post, and it seems like everyone else who posted did too -- no-one seemed to be snarking or complaining or asking for it to go. Sure, it's a link to a Google search, but an interesting one I hadn't thought of before. It was headed for a fun interweb memories thread... but then it was tragically taken from us. As an official Metafilter King, I would urge you to reconsider.
Will the search feature be coming back any time?
Ever since MeFi's search feature went away and it now lets you search google or yahoo, I'm having trouble finding past posts I'm looking for. Right now I'm looking for a post from within the last month or so where you could enter a URL into this website and it would give you a bunch of feedback on how good/bad it was, etc..
Will the search feature be coming back any time? Google/yahoo don't seem to order by date, and seem to mix in all sorts of stuff that clouds up my search. I loved being able to restrict my search to "within the last month", etc...

Search with Yahoo instead of Google?
It has been demonstrated many times that when searching MeFi, Yahoo does a better job than Google-- maybe the search box on the homepage should use Yahoo?
Search is broken again.
Search is broken, part 532. But this time it's a Google bug. Here's an example: I couldn't find a recent excellent AskMe, until iconomy kindly answered my MetaAsk, noting it was called MySonHatesMeFilter. But using Google, even with that unique string, I don't find the original article, but Yahoo and MSN find it. I'm afraid Google is no longer necessarily "your best bet". How about adding Yahoo and MSN search boxes?
Does googling ask.metafilter.com get the archives?
Does googling ask.metafilter.com get the archives? I was gearing up to chime in about visiting Moab for i_cola, when I had a moment of deja vu. The domain restricted search turned up only two non-results... but searching on my MetaTalk comment history broght me what I was looking for.
Google query in lieu of an answer
In a recent AskMeFi thread a link to a Google query was provided in lieu of an answer [more inside].

Is Google indexing broken?
When I wanted to do a search to find out if someone had linked to a given site in a FPP yet, I decided to try something different. I went to old google and put in this URL, which was the link in the most popular FPPof the day exactly two weeks ago, as a "who link's to you?" search.
Shouldn't google have indexed the thread, then, since it links back to the original article? Strange, that it doesn't do this for a link and lenghty thread on a topic that will have serious implications for everyone on the internet, specifically Americans? Has google dropped the ball? Is this all just a bunch of Tom-Foolery?

Add google to MeTa search page
Certainly not a pressing need but I'd appreciate it if you could add the google search to the MeTa search page just like we have it on the MeFi search page.
Google Search
'Your original search: beer bottle betadene was misspelled and returned 0 results. The corrected search: beer bottle betadine was done instead and the results appear below.' Has Google always done this (ie, this just happens to be my first misspelled search to score zero hits), or is it something new?
Better than Google Images?
Help: can anybody point me to the thread where they discussed various image-search engines better than google's? I think the original post was about one that used some sort of fuzzy logic system instead of just keywords.
