If an FPP about a member (even if they happen to be famous) is posted, but it doesn't provide any fruitful information for others to right a situation where they feel they have been overcharged, then why is it allowed?

Is it considered a self-link to post a legitimate news story that you have a personal connection to? If it is, is it OK for me to use MeTa to ask someone else to post it instead of me? I don't want to cirumvent the rules, so I'll hold off on giving the links until there's a reasonable consensus in favor of it.

I know that he owns about 5 metafilter accounts, all registered after the $5 registration fee, all well used and difficult to call 'plant' on." O RLY? "All posts are © their original authors". That's what it says at the bottom of this page. My question: is that true, and is it true whether it says so or not? A friend who owns a mailing list has been threatened with a liable suit by a person who feels they were "defamed" in a post by a member. Is the list owner really responsible for what members post? Could Matt be sued for members rants about real people, and is there a difference (as an example) between saying "Ashcroft is an asshole" and "I think Ashcroft is an asshole"?

I just thought we should have an open thread on Jason Krannke's new tagline for Metafilter: "your source for political news, stories stolen from Slashdot, weblogger gossip, and links to major news stories that everyone already knows about".
So? If MeFi can save me the trouble of visiting Slashdot, Drudge and CNN.com (plus providing comments on the various topics I can steal to sound smarter in RW conversations), I think it provides a very important service. Maybe not the service mathowie originally intended...
