Take it to Sportsfilter October 7, 2002 11:30 AM   Subscribe

Here's a fun brain teaser for ya. Wouldn't sports oriented front page posts like this and this be better suited in SportsFilter? And if not, why not?

Zach, search the archives for "sportsfilter" for previous discussion of this question. Anything worthy of standing on its own (per the guidelines, strong link, people haven't seen it before, yadda yadda) is fine here. SportsFilter operates independently of MetaFilter, not as the "hidden sports category" of MetaFilter.

I don't object to sports posts here -- for what that's worth -- but I guess I am surprised that they're not showing up on SportsFilter (whether in addition to or instead of). More out of a sense that you want the spinoff to do well, rather than not wanting the content here.

Zach, the bug that crawled up your ass has made it into the far recesses of your brain. For the love of God, get a hook and stab the little fucker through your nose.

I for one will not welcome our new Pankake Overlord!

Seems awful quiet over at Sportsfilter.

"I sense a trap."

I'll put the pin back in the grenade, then. *smirk*

As for stabbing bugs through my nose, I'm not into body manipulation. Sorry to disappoint.

As a side note, has anyone else noticed how defensive and/or apologetic the posts have become lately? It was bad enough when, last Friday, a brand new member posted an unusual link to a Flash app, and was so scared of doubleposting felt the need to add this comment:

"I searched and searched, and while I'm unsure that the search engine is actually working (a full-site search for the word "magic" turned up 0 results, which seems unlikely to me), I have never seen this link here, and hope I'm not redundant."

Now we have Fat Buddha's post actually preempting snark with the statement, "This is brilliant writing which happens to concern itself with sport, so there is no need for any 'doesn't this belong on Sportfilter' type snideness."

Is this a sign? I think I'll try to be a little more forgiving in the future.

When we started SportsFilter, the goal wasn't to siphon off the sports links here. We wanted to provide a place where sports could be discussed in great detail among a community of fellow obsessives.

Wow...I never would have bothered looking at this ewww sportslink had I not read about it here in the gossip columns!

Thanks! It even turned out to be an interesting post.

fwiw, I usually edit out the confessions, apologies, and other such nonsense from posts when I spot them, usually to the tune of a few times a week. I was hoping it sent a message to the original poster that they really didn't have to do that.

I hadn't spotted the messages on the two linked here.

PANKKAKE? I can only imagine what that's like.

I'd imagine it involves lots of Mrs. Butterworth's brown sugary goodness running down your face.

Isn't it SportsFilter, being a specialized weblog, which should say "Hey, this isn't MetaFilter!" if someone posts something not about sport - rather than the other way round?
