Warning for MeMail to disabled accounts

If a user has a disabled account, the user's profile page lacks a link to send MeFi Mail, effectively preventing us from sending that user MeMail. But most of the MeMails I send are via replies. When I reply, there is no warning if the user has disabled the account. It can be a little surprising to realize that one has been sending messages essentially into the ether, although I presume the messages are preserved for the user's return. Can we get a warning when sending a MeMail to a user with a disabled account?

Five dollars!

Meta-metafilter: What are examples of some other online communities that have successfully kept the quality of posts/forums at a high level by requiring a nominal $5 to $10 signup fee? [more inside]

Crowded behind the green curtain.

From a profile:
I inherited this account from my mom who died three years ago. I am, apparently, a sub-par contributor.
(My Dad uses it sometimes, too. He's the one with the more intelligent comments)
(Later. At this point, several, well, three or five, people are using this account but none will ever match the original account holder in terms of The Right Stuff)

I don't think there's a guideline for multiple people using one account, but maybe there should be? [Not a callout, hence no link.]

Account Closing Protocol

What would be the reason someone would want to close their account? If someone didn't want to "belong" to this "community", wouldn't someone just quit posting to the site, and reading it? And what of the posts someone has previously posted? Would a request to delete all of someone's own posts be complied with? [more inside]

Gifting a Metafilter account

Can I give the gift that keeps on giving? Meaning, a mefi account? As it stands I could pay the five bucks and sign somebody up, but the giftee wouldn't have any control over her username or password and can't change them after the fact.

Fun with statistics

Fun with statistics: I have always been curious to the percentage of "ghost accounts" on MeFi, and so today I decided to find out! I took a random sample of 263 (95% +/- 6) user accounts, and discovered that 61.2% of registered users have never commented or posted. Of the 38.8% who have posted, 45.1% have posted less than 10 comments, 42.2% have posted between 10 and 99 comments, and 12.7% have made more than 100 comments.
