hermitosis, you are an attention whore.

Are you kidding me with this? It's easy to couch this as just another cute joke, but it's honestly the most blatant plea for favorites I've ever seen. Bad form!

HICST, is there perhaps some underlying argument between you and hermitosis that is manifesting in threads here? That AskMe from hermitosis that you answered in was kind of weird and seemed to be getting kind of personal, and this also seems to be going that way. The AskMe read like standard Cat FAQ but seemed to be something different altogether in the end, as does this callout for favorite whoring.

hermitosis is not the real problem in that horrible MeFi thread, even though his behavior is distasteful. A little favorite whoring pales in comparison to all the comments suggesting this person, real or not, should kill herself now, or be physically assaulted. The whole thing is the worst of MeFi.

If you don't have the favourites by Friday, the kid dies. You don't have the favourites. Now, you could send 500 of jonmc's groupies an image exploit, but it will cause hermitosis' account to be closed. If hermitosis' account is closed, the kid dies. So that's no go. However, you could always schmooze with the Xenuts: get a Scientologist to kill a blogger every day for 90 days, and you should just make it. But then you'll get Anonymous all up in your grill like whoa, and then the kid dies. So there's that. Luckily, you've still got got your women over 50 - get three of them to vote for Obama, and you get off scott free. But remember, if and when Obama gets elected, his first act in office will be to make sure the kid dies.

So you're basically fucked.

Speaking for myself, I did it because I figured it was a funny way of saying 'this site is bullshit,' and I've known a few people who have commited suicide, I can assure you that I don't take the issue lightly. If the site is a hoax (and I think we all can agree that it probably is), it's existence is a far bigger affront to the issue than any of the comments we made.
posted by jonmc at 9:28 AM on February 11, 2008

Yeah, if I get 500, I really will do it.

My intent originally was to just set up a parallel to the (awful) post. I set the number at a point I thought was possible, but not likely to be reached. Though even I underestimated the instinct people have to respond to attention-whoring, whether out of curiosity, out of amusement, or out of a desire to punish the whore. In a way, my comment (262 and climbing) is a better response than Jane's blog deserves, but going through with it is really the only way I can conclusively demonstrate how I'm different than the thing I'm making fun of.

Besides, maybe the best way to break out of the favorites game altogether is to walk away from what I have and start fresh. I can't think of a better way to go about it, I guess.

(Blazecock, I can always unfave my own at the last minute and let someone else have the coup de gras.)

If the site is a hoax (and I think we all can agree that it probably is)

The "if" and "probably" in your response admit that the site might not be a hoax. Even if there is only a 1% chance that it's for real, are the cruel, misanthropic jokes in there really so important as the crushing discouragement a depressed person would feel if they read that thread egging them on to just do it already? (As an aside, I wonder whether those comments might create legal liability for Matt.)

As you say, you don't take suicide lightly at all. Well, as long as it's probably a hoax, in which case, you kinda do take it lightly imho.

And we don't have to wait for hermitosis to close his account for us. We can make change happen. We are the ones we are waiting for. Will stand with me today with hundreds of other mefites to demand change?

The dream of the republican who wants to have a civil political discussion on metafilter is the same as the dream of the anonymous ask metafilter poster who wants to ask a question without being judged harshly by his peers. When I look at this great site, I don't see ask metafilter and metatalk, I see one metafilter, united in the great cause of our lifetime.
