A minor pony: on the search results page, can the number of comments for each post be included in the "posted by" line, the same way it is on the main page? [more inside]

Pony: Unless I'm wrong, it seems that inclusion on the 'popular posts' page/rss feed is limited to highly favorited threads. Can we get threads with a lot of comments included on that page/feed as well, even if they don't have a lot of favorites? Or a separate page for that sort of thing?

I use the "Popular Comments" feed to keep track of all the great things you witty people are always saying. Currently, the title of each comment in the feed is formatted like so:
By orthogonality in MeFi
which does not provide any sort of context for the comment. [more inside]

I was a little sad to see the Purple Reign post deleted; I realize that the post itself was DOA but I loved some of the links posted within the thread. Perhaps there is a middle ground that is a step above killing that would still allow folks to at least see the comments while still culling the post.

Many of us have spent quite a bit of time writing our various comments and posts on MetaFilter. In the spirit of "All posts are © their original authors," I would like to request the ability for a user to be able to download all of their own contributions as a simple data dump. [more inside]

Along the lines of the "favorite" button, I suggest adding a "me too" button to appear alongside comments. A list of the people who have clicked "me too" would appear after the comment.
Rationale: I get the impression that a lot of people use favorites not so much as bookmarks, but to endorse or "vote for" a comment. Particularly on AskMe, where the point is not so much to discuss a topic as it is to answer a question, it could be useful to indicate "I have nothing to add to soandso's great comment, but want to let it be known that I endorse this answer."
I suppose that a "me too" button also invites a "you've got to be kidding" button, but that's a lazy form of argumentation, and would be served just as well by clicking "me too" on a rebuttal comment or writing your own.

Often in Ask Metafilter the original questioner chimes in with clarifications or extra information, but answerers don't necessarily read all previous comments before chipping in. Do people think it might be a good idea to highlight the original poster's comments in thread? (Obviously this only makes sense for Ask).

My first-ever pony request: In a given thread, what about a link next to each member's individual comments, that is titled "see all comments by this member in this thread." So, say, I want to see all of mathowie's comments in a particular thread, I click on that link and it gives me a page with just mathowie's comments in that thread. I know you can see all of a member's comments by going to their user page, but it's kind of cumbersome to click back and forth and you can't view all the comments together. It would be nice to have them all thrown up on one page. It would help us evaluate the position or argument that the person is developing throughout the thread.

How about an RSS Feed that keeps track of when other people save your comment as favorites? Then you would never have to check that page manually to boost your self-worth.

How difficult would it be to program an edit function into our comments that allows us to revise our contributions within 1-5 minutes of posting it? I think it'd be a very cool thing to have for us OCD types that apologize after we spell something wrong and immediately correct ourselves in the next comment. Also, it could serve as a conscience (you post something, you regret it immediately, and get rid of it). Note, I'm not asking for unlimited editing. Only the ability to edit within 1-5 minutes of your original post.

"Fantastic comments" make good reading. Why can I only read the last ten? Is it just a technical issue, or is there a worry that a permanent archive will result in competition?
(and if so, is competition that encourages people to write fantastic comments really such a bad idea?)

Now that the contest is over, what is the point of having voting on Metafilter Projects? Anyone who wants to post the project to the front page can do so—no matter how many votes there are—and in most cases, having comments there instead of voting could provide the poster with valuable criticism and advice.
Is it just the worry that people will write mean things about the projects?

Ponyfilter: It'd be really nice if the 'Comments' entry box could be the full width of the browser. MeFi does an excellent job in handling widescreen monitors in all respects but that one. [bit more inside]

It would be cool to have RSS feeds on a per user basis. I'm thinking mainly posts but comments would be fine too. Something like http://www.metafilter.com/username.mefi/user/posts.rss and http://www.metafilter.com/username.mefi/user/comments.rss. It'd be a great way to keep up with people whose stuff you enjoy (like everyone's favorite) w/o getting lost in the volume.

Temporary comment editing?
I'm sure this has been brought up before but......It would be nice to be able to edit one's comments for a short period after posting. Not for very long, obviously, but long enough to fix glaring errors or spelling mistakes.

Suggestion for a small format change: how about putting the byline on top of the comment in discussion threads? This would allow us to efficiently skip comments from users we don't want to hear from without resorting to user killfiles, and without wasting precious seconds of I'm-surfing-at-work-and-I-really-shouldn't-be-doing-this time to realize that this is a comment from that guy. Having the byline at the top would save a bit of scrolling and skimming, since you'd know what you're getting into right from the start. Also, some MeFites are "must-reads" for me and I'd like to make sure I don't blow past them.

Dear Santa,
I already know that I'm getting the Schwinn "Stingray" 5 speed, ala 1977, and I already have one of my front teeth;
what I really, really need is "comments" for Mefi Projects.
I know it's been discussed, but I think it might be important. Frankly, I've seen a few things posted that could use some further insight. I haven't been inclined to send things to the blue for further discussion, it should happen their on the (white)?

How about a feature that allows people to mark certain comments in a thread as "pivot comments." These "pivots" are comments that drastically altered the course of the conversation. If enough people flag a comment as pivotal, it would stand out somehow. It seems like "100+ comment threads" are here to stay, and this would reduce redundancy and make them easier to navigate.

Is it possible to update the search function so that you can search not only posts but the comments? Didn't it used to do that? Google doesn't seem to drill down to the comments (except in fairly new threads) and neither does the MetaFilter search function which can make it very difficult to track down an old comment or links that appeared only in the comments.

This post about readings for a wedding has great responses, and links to other threads with great responses (disclaimer: I responded to one of them.) I flagged the link as Other, expecting to be able to comment, but sadly, there is no comment capability. Please administrator, consider granting this pony, "comments on the flag page," if it is not too large and cumbersome.

I'd like to see individual comments feeds for all MeFi posts. This would make threads much easier to track. Also, could we get feeds for MeFi tags too perhaps? And what about feeds for each user's posts and comments, like how 43 Things uses them.

Is there a way we can delete our own comments? I understand that this could lead to confusing threads if people commented on a subsequently-removed comment, so if it needs to be limited to instances where the commenter left the last comment on a thread, that could work.

When looking at a MetaFilter post, the line under the description looks like this:
posted by too_many_notes at 4:56 AM EST (13 comments total) ( feature_request ) [!]
However, in both MetaTalk and AskMetaFilter the "(13 comments total)" is missing. I find this information useful in the thread. Could the green and gray be more like the blue?

Pony, pony, pony. Everyone wants a Pony. Here's the one I'd really like: The introduction of the [!] is nice. But I am way more interested in seeing the best, most interesting comments than I care about bad ones getting taken out behind the woodshed. If there has to be a [!] could there also be a [!!!]? In my pony dreams this spits out to a page like the del.icio.us popular list. Or something like that.

Last alluded to here: None of the redesign entries (unless I missed something) addressed the "comments by user" page, which is probably the clunkiest and least usable feature on the site. Long comment histories take forever to load (and tax the server); and you can't actually see any of the comments without clicking on each individual link. I think pagination, plus an ability to preview the actual comment, would be a great help.

If each user's page of posted links had comment counts and an RSS feed, Metafilter would instantly turn into a community with hundreds of baby weblogs like Crunchlandfilter, Miguelfilter, Foldfilter, and Sudamafilter.

I wonder if it wouldn't improve the discussions if the comment feature would only come up after the posted link was visited. Too often reactions are to the post and previous comments, rather than the issue posited in the link.

Let me preface this by saying that I am not looking to give mathowie more work to do. Having said that, I was wondering if there is a non-labor-intensive way by which I can be notified when new comments have been added to threads I've commented in without visiting the site and sorting by my comments?

Since the proverbial "MeTa seal" has been broken, and posts are flowing freely again, I have a request for management. I frequent Plastic, and their commenting structure intrigues me. You have the ability to comment to a specific comment within the thread, or create a free-standing comment. Is it possible for MeFi to have the same/similar structure? That way, when a poster would like to comment specifically to another poster, there's no need to search the entire thread for responses.
