Because for some reason I can't sign into metafilter's main page, I thought I'd give a brief update on the situation in this thread here. [more inside]

Ordinary People

Unfortunately, I can't post it to the original thread because it's more that 30 days old, but Paul Schmeltzer just posted my contribution to his Signifier-Signed project to the blog. Heh. [more inside]

Pass the bacon salt, please.

Update: Bejing's counterfeit pork dumplings [referenced in a prior food thread] have been discredited as byproducts of the monkeyfishing industry.

who was that guy, the one with the plane...?

UpdateFilter: while I was waiting in line for an iPhone with my friend yesterday (for him not for me) I was catching up on a little work. I was showing my friend the MeFi admin interface and someone looked over my shoulder and said "is that MetaFilter?" I said yes, was he a member? He said no but a video that he had made got linked on MeFi last February and had catapulted him to mini-stardom for a few weeks. He gave me some backstory on the movie....

where does breaking news update go?

This morning two Australian miners were freed after being trapped underground for 15 days. And this morning on MeFi, we had not one but two threads devoted to it. The latter was deleted but the former still stands. Which raises the question of why, when there was already a thread devoted to the subject only a few days ago, wherein this news belongs.

Followup on yellow gnome mefi post

Followup-filter: the yellow gnomes in my "art or crazy?" post turn out to have been neither, but simply an instance of viral marketing for a VOIP application. [mi]

Clooney misattribution.

this post about an article by George Clooney was not actually written by George Clooney.

Yeah, but it is still a double

Am I missing something here? Sure its a good link but its still a double-post and the poster himself states: "*shrug* sorry, I'm a sucker for his photos. I figured everyone who missed it last time would appreciate it and the people who'd already seen it would like to know he's updating again."

Mefite nudist arrested on child sex abuse charges

A freaky unfortunate turn of events: As an update on a very old thread on nudism that questioned and debated the gray area between nude adults and nudist children in the setting of a nudist colony, one defender of nudist culture from that discussion was arrested on charges of child sex abuse late last year (still being held awaiting trial afaict). It's freaky to go back and re-read the debate knowing what eventually came to pass.

Are annual repostings of this nature acceptable?

Annual repetition. This thread has begun a discussion on the MeFi acceptability of pages which change on an annual basis. Are annual repostings of this nature acceptable? [MI]

Update already linked in original thread

No need for this as the WaPo article was linked in the actual thread a few days ago.

Not a call out or smack down, just a minor admin detail.

Updated link for closed thread?

What does one do with an updated link for something that's already been posted, after the thread's been closed? (More inside...)

This is definitely now how we do an update

Something really got your knickers in a knot? Well, then, don't just put it on the front page once. Wait one day and post an update. Note that in this case, the update's new information is a week old and was already posted in the original thread.

AU may back off unsuccessful "Pacific Solution"

AU may back off unsuccessful "Pacific Solution"
Howard himself may be clearing the ground for a back down. In a marked departure from his election campaign rhetoric, he said in an interview last week that turning asylum seekers' boats back to sea was "completely inhuman."
That's not just marked, it's a 180! There was a bit of interest in this story here a while ago, but I thought this new wrinkle in AU's aid-for-beds deal with Pacific nations didn't merit another "FPP." (see also 1, 2)
