User registrations are quickly coming up on 100k (Highest user number is around 99300 as of this posting). Are there any plans to either commemorate the occasion, or reserve the number? [more inside]

Does the five bucks make a difference in the quality of our discussions? There's a Freakanomics post on the NY Times today that points to a web page set up to compare comment-streams on MetaFilter and YouTube. [more inside]

Earlier on AskMefi there was a question from "siahny" asking to identify a painting via email. I've got the picture (which is a Word document). The thread seems to be deleted, but should I post it up anyway? She really does want the painting identified...

Is it possible to gift someone a membership? I have a friend sorely in need of a MeFi lifestyle awakening, but haven't seen a way to make this happen.

If you close signups for a couple of years it will lend an air of prestige and exclusivity to Metafilter.

Prospective new users needing help? Earlier the idea was discussed of existing users helping subsidize new users who can't afford the signup fee. Any oldbies willing to help out in this regard? [more inside]

Did anyone else noticed the membership count changing in the blue? It seemed like it dropped from the 17000's down to 16896.

So many of us spent some time at Monkeyfilter while the server was down and it's time to ask again about opening up membership. Pretty please? with sugar on top?

I've had three friends asking me what "hoops we have to jump through" to become members of MetaFilter now that the new process is in place. Any chance of a set of guidelines?
Either that, or we can start talking about building an assault course for the new signups... ;)

While reading the recent MetaTalk discussion about opening the doors to new members, I had an idea:
What about creating a new system where people who want to become members can compete for membership?

Is there anyway of telling how strong the 'outside-America' contingent is on MeFi?
How international are we?

Now that membership has opened again, how about greeting new members on the front page just after they've joined with something like, 'Metafilter welcomes [insert link to username and profile'. It's always good to get a hug when you arrive at a party.

We've just turned over 16,000 members according to the front page. Our lucky number 16,000 is hans_1984 who wins this lovely MetaTalk thread. Welcome aboard, Hans!

Since sign-ups were turned back on the thread count has been growing rapidly. With September 11th coming up, we'll almost certainly see thread 20,000 within the week. The last base-ten rollover passed with little fanfare. Should we ignore the significance of #20k? Use it for elitist ego stroking? Perhaps pancakes are in order...

It appears as though the member count on the front page of MeFi does not accurately reflect the number of members. The most recent member seems to be 14212, while the member count is only 14041. While that is certainly a pretty palindrome, why the discrepancy?

MoFi4MeFi (MoneyFilter for MetaFilter): Last September, Matt asked the following: What if I killed [MeFi] sometime in the future, and brought it back, but you had to pay a small membership fee or some other 'high' barrier to entry? That'd keep the crowd small, manageable, and only those that really cared to discuss things would contribute. Would that make things better? Worse?
The discussion that followed did not necessarily address the question (a few positively responded to a subscriber-based MeFi). Maybe, this idea needs to be reviewed again. [more inside]

Is it important for Metafilter to grow its membership? Is it important for feature requests to be implemented? If the answer to either is yes, isn't it then the membership's challenge ( or responsibility?) to contribute more cash, or to contribute more time to help figure out how more cash can be generated. A Metafilter Proposal at theobvious.com, supporting pay-for-play, and a few other controls. Pretty well thought out. Of particular interest might be the sliding scale on price. Discuss.

How come new admissions are frozen but the number of members(12322 when last I checked)keeps creeping up? Asylum seekers? Sleight of hand on the part of undesirable aliens? I think we should be told...

MeFi is so *very* close... Can Matt break 500 before SXSW? Last push people! Tell your friends! ReRegister with Hotbot!! Let's tear this mother UP!!! I think 500 registered users will give Matt the credibility he needs for the weblogpanel (I think that we should decide that weblogterms with the word weblog in them should lose all internal spacing - you know, for weblogconsistency.)
