Projects pony: email notification when project is posted to the blue. [more inside]
posted by ocherdraco on Aug 24, 2009 - 6 comments

So earlier this morning I posted something innocuous but inane in an askme thread that had been more or less answered. Just now, logging in, I see that that comment has been disappeared. This is fine, and not particularly worthy of complaint, but I find it sort of annoying that there's no notification or anyway for me to know that the reply was ever made at all. [more inside]

Is there a good way to get email notifications of updates to AskMe threads? [more inside]

Pony: A button to notify contacts you choose about an interesting FPP, or an AskMe they're qualified to answer. For example, one of my contacts could easily give me a heads-up when there's a post about geography, or I could notify Astro Zombie about a Minneapolis-related thread. No more "paging languagehat" answers to etymology questions. If it gets spammy/annoying for th recipient, they can opt out or send me a STFU MeMail. [more inside]

Dragging a prior request onto the table: MeTa notifications in MeFi/AskMe threads. [more inside]

Help! a question I asked yesterday on ask.metafilter disappeared. I received no message from admin about it. I looked both in my recent activity and on the questions posted yesterday. Yet I am not allowed to post another question for a week. My question was not inappropriate in any way and I should have been contacted if it was. I demand the question restored (it was: tips on looking for a new job while currently employed) or to have the right to post another question immediately. I also emailed this via the contact form.

Ooh ooh- I've got an idea. Picture this- you open a thread (AskMe or MeFi), and at the top of the thread, there is a small note that says "This thread is currently being debated in MetaTalk.", with a link to the MeTa thread. This way, people have no excuse for taking a big steamy dump in threads. People posting MeTa complaints could fill in a field with the post ID, and some database magic could occur to link the two. Just floating this out there to see what others think.

PonyFilter... Would it be possible to get a notification either as email (probably hard to do) or on the my comments page when an ask.mefi or metafilter post uses a certain tag. [more inside]

I've noticed that many AskMe threads (like this one) dealing with potential crimes and/or civil suits could be subpoened as evidence if the right person connected the dots. Should there be a notice on the anonymous question page that Metafilter may be compelled by law to release the IP address of anonymous posters?

My AIM neighbor has an anonymous question pending with AskMe. How long does that take? If it gets kicked out for some reason, is questioner notified? He/she has asked me to ask this for the sake of his/her anonymity.

Now that AskMe thread expiry dates have been extended (finally!), can we get a feature that tells us when new comments have been posted? Right now it just says 'go to the category view for this result' or something.
On a similar note, when I click on 'Work and Money', i only get results for the past month... what up with that?

If a comment is deleted, is the user notified? I commented in the roach question, and now it's gone. Is it because I used a bad word?

Let me preface this by saying that I am not looking to give mathowie more work to do. Having said that, I was wondering if there is a non-labor-intensive way by which I can be notified when new comments have been added to threads I've commented in without visiting the site and sorting by my comments?

idea (or has this been suggested before?):

what if each thread and comment had a "notify" link next to it; click the link and you get a pop-up window asking if you'd like to send the note, and if you clicked yes, a notification would be sent to matt, saying "this thread needs your attention" or "this comment needs your attention".

that way, people could notify matt of double posts and flamewars while they were reading the thread; this would eliminate the need for matt to constantly monitor the board himself, and potentially cut down on all those annoying double post comments.

the note could either send a separate email to matt, or it could just send a note telling him to go to a page that would compile the red flags by thread. he could see at a glance that 1 person flagged thread (a) and 12 flagged thread (b), and so on. this page would have check boxes next to each comment that had been flagged, so that matt could delete each notice once he had dealt with the trouble post.

if that seems like it would generate too much mail for matt, then a hybrid "star chamber/notification system" : this feature would be activated for 20 active, trusted members (preferably in various time zones).

the main result of this feature would be to eliminate the need for matt to continuously monitor the board himself, while at the same time ensuring that he makes all the calls regarding the appropriateness of any given post.

does my description make sense, and is this an idea that would save you time, matt?
