Pony request: notification for nearby meetups
Dear mefi powers that be,
Given that mefi knows my location from my profile, it would be sweet if it could notify me of nearby meetups.
And I'd like a pony.
love,
pharm

Just check MeTa obsessively like everyone else?

You could subscribe to the London tag feed. That would work better for people in/near multiple locales, too. I'm surprised, but the gathering category has no apparent feed.
This would have to be an opt-in option, I'm sure. The alternative bears no consideration.

That's true. A bit unfriendly to the metafilter server perhaps?

Yeah, that list on the sidebar is totes tl;dr.
But as long as we're asking for stuff, can we just make MeFi more like Facebook? At least with the professional white background, c'mon.
Also, it's a little forward asking for ponies even as site admin is still getting previous functionality restored, no?
Seriously, though, there's plenty of ways to keep up on meetups. One that hasn't been mentioned yet is the iCal integration. If you check your Google stuff more often than MeTa, that might work. But mainly, there's no shortage of ways to keep up on this stuff, and your suggested technical solution addresses a PthatEBKAC.

It would be clever. While a MeTaddict like myself wouldn't miss a nearby meetup I know people who have.
Opt-in, of course.
And yeah, this is hardly the biggest priority.

Can't we all let pb access our Google calendars so he can write a script that will automatically schedule meetups based on location and availability?

Ferfuckssake! After they just mopped up the huge fucking mess some dipshits left all over the server, you have the audacity to ask for a pony!? Seriously?
How about pb just rip out his still-beating heart for you? Will that satisfy you? Here's Matthowie's first born. Are you fucking happy now?
Oh wait...
Do you have one of those things....what do they call them, a life? Were you not here over the weekend? Were you doing something that didn't require TCP/IP?
If so, nevermind.
What's it like?
You know...out there?
:-)
That would be a cool pony.

Can't we all let pb access our minds so that we feel an overwhelming, if inexplicable, urge to attend a meetup when it is happening nearby, and rise from our desks or our couches, stumbling zombie-like towards the relevant location?

Turgid dahlia,
Others are having fun. You are not.
Just a friendly reminder!

I want meetup directions beamed to my GPS.
Seriously though, I'm surprised we don't have a meetup mashup map like we do for Jobs.

I think Plutor's got a greasemonkey script for that.

I can't find the comment right now, but I had asked for this in the past.
I still think it would be a nice Opt In option, next to the Location Field in your user profile. A check box and a drop down menu "notify me of metafilter event X miles from my location."
Then you get a memail to the metatalk meetup post when such an event occurs.
Should save the usual tedious process of mass mailing everyone in your "neardby users list" or your contacts list about the meetup. And since it would be off by default, only users who are interested in meetups would go and check the box.

I have already got that bit covered, I don't know what duplicating that functionality for pb is expected to accomplish.

Oh, FFS.
On the front page of Metatalk, in the meetup box, between Upcoming & Recent Meetups, note an ical link.
Announced in 2007.
