I'm looking for an old Ask thread about the different ways people do well in school. It talked about the disdain people who glide through have for the people who study hard, and that the former consider effort a sign of not being smart enough to excel without trying.

Did the recent changes to "Recent Activity" make it really inefficient? It takes forever to bring up that page now.

Given the regular and predictable performance issues with the site, and my limited understanding of the infrastructure behind the current implementation, when is the Great Rewrite planned?

So hey... that singing audition I was preparing for a few weeks ago? Well, it seems I got the gig. Sooo it looks like I'm going back to being a working professional jazz singer & I'll be doing at least a few Sunday nights at the Claremont Hotel in Berkeley this year (starting in June or July). And with that, I'll probably get off my rear & start playing other places in the Bay area too (I'm finally starting on a new press kit & music website. Yay!). You lovely Mefites have been very supportive of my music (& my desire to return to making it); it's been ultra appreciated. Moral of the story: if any of you are in the Bay area & interested in hearing me belt out some jazz in person someday, let me know & I can put you on my mailing list for upcoming gigs. Kinda like a mini meetup where I shall serenade you! It's the least I can do. :)

Whatever this
fmpub javascript thing is, it's making it annoyingly slow to load the front pages (www. and ask.). And has been doing so for at least a couple of days. This is
what one sees for an interminable period of time.

Disappearing mefi - from just after 9am UK time until 12.30 ish I couldn't get onto mefi at all - only the status blog was working. It's not the first time I've had trouble getting on in the mornings here - is it mefi or do I have some sort of crazy network issue?

gigFilter: Just out of curiousity, who has real-world events they'll be participating in the next week 7 days?: Live Music, Plays, Gallery Showings? Anything you have going on that's open to the public?

I'm getting some hang time while logging in. It's coming from dynamic.fmpub.net
It could be a porn-bot that I picked up but I'm only experiencing with Metafilter pages/sites. It's not a huge problem but it looks like I'm being routed through something else before making Metafilter contact. And sometimes it just lags forever.

I for one am interested in any plans for possible future improvements to the uptime capabilities of the website "MetaFilter". I am eager to discuss these issues with the group as a whole!

The
Apache server has been really fast for me, with better uptime than
the IIS one. I'm even posting comments on it successfully, though other things like the
user page don't work yet. What's the dev update on its deployment? I don't meant to be impatient, just curious.

Metafilter is particularly slow-loading this afternoon. Is there a problem?

Matt, when you changed server you seemed pretty pissed off with CFMX. Do you still stand by that? I reckon your opinion on this would be of a lot of use to those thinking about using it or upgrading.

Request canceled or ignored by serverServer busy or unable to fulfill request.
I'm getting a lot of these today. Is it my ISP or something else? Anybody else?

MetaFilter has been very slow all weekend - first time this has happened since I joined last September. Access has been fine. But when I try to jump to the comments - or post a comment - it keeps timing out. What's going to happen when Monday comes? Can the greedy Google bots be munching away at more than 33% or would this alone be enough?
Any way we users can lighten the load on our side?

Since about 6:00am PST, I must have had about 30+ server timeouts like so:
Error Occurred While Processing Request
Error Diagnostic Information
Request canceled or ignored by serverServer busy or unable to fulfill request. The server is unable to fulfill your request due to extremely high traffic or an unexpected internal error. Please attempt your request again (if you are repeatedly unsuccessful you should notify the site administrator). (Location Code: 26)
Anyone else having problems?

Despite all the new RAM, at least from Europe, access is reaching 11.9 levels of difficulty. Is static-rendering possible? This time users are trusting MetaFilter more than the usual sources, as it does a great summing up job.

I seem to remember Matt saying once that front page requests are the single biggest load on the server. Would it make sense to make all links, including threads, open up in a separate window (that can be reused)? People can still refresh the front page if they want the latest links.

Is it just the adtext-fueled upbeat mood or is the server particularly fast today?

In regards to recent bandwidth issues: Why don't we (by we I mean Matt, and by Matt I mean Mr. Haughey) change the target of links in posts to "_new"?
That way we won't have to wait for the home page to reload when we hit 'back'.

As per Matt's request, I changed my preferences to load only the last three days' links on the front page. But it still loads a full week's worth. Any idea what's up? I'm happy to help reduce the load on the server but this makes it difficult. :-)

metafilter just got slower then it was before. I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed elsewhere, but since Monday or even a little earlier MetaFilter has been very very slow. I was wondering if it was relocated to new space or if this is just a hop issue.
