Now that the #mefi IRC channel has moved, someone might want to update the Wiki entry.

Having visited #mefi only once, more than two years ago, that person should probably not be me.

Why not you? You know where the IRC channel has moved to. You have all of the pertinent information. Wikis are meant to be edited by anyone. Be bold.

That, and it looks like the wiki entry is up to date and has been since August 29, 2005 at 4:12 pm.

You're right, I could do it. But the channel mentioned in my first link is supposedly temporary, and since I'm not part of that community, I won't be informed of the permanent home unless it's posted here.

The entry isn't up to date, the old channel addresses are still listed as current and active.

The IRC channel has moved again to a more permanent server, me3dia, and I think we're going to wait a bit to do a final announcement (since we JUST HAD an IRC MeTa thread) and update the Wiki then.

Oh, and if you visit the temp channel, the permanent channel (#tapes on irc.ieattapes.com) is in the topic.

Bah, why hassle with setting up irc servers that will inevitably suffer from the same problem over the long run when they could just use undernet.org and get themselves @X to maintain the channel.

furtive the problem with #mefi was always that people were bitching at chrish and mathowie instead of the ops. This is what eventually lead to #mefi being shut down. With the lunatics now running the asylum, the buck can stop where it always should have - the channel ops.

As for public servers - within an hour of moving #tapes to slashnet one of the ops got hit by a spam bot. Nevermind the teaming hordes of morlocks beating down the door.

Wow, it's like Greek. Thanks, Ryvar -- I needed more incomprehensibility in my life.

Sweet, another thread about somebody's dumbass drama-filled irc channel! Just what I was hoping for!

Frighteningly enough, of the many IRC channels I've been in for more than six months, I think #mefi/#tapes probably has the least drama out of all of them - this whole business is a very recent development. But hey, don't let me stand in the way of you slinging out blind generalizations about a community you've little or no participation in.

Yea, IRC does have a penchant for generating drama, although I'm not sure why. Back during college one of my good friends I'd had since middle school ran a channel that myself and a handful of real-life and online friends hung out in. When one of his online pals started being a real jerk to one of the RL folks (because he was gay) and the channel owner refused to do anything about it, half of us up and left for another channel (ironically, on Slashnet!).

He didn't talk to me for like 6 months after that happened. *rolls eyes*.

Man, what is up with IRC being such a hotbed of drama? Not just #mefi, but IRC in general. Why don't people just get up from their computers and go for a walk.

*sigh*
