Complaint on single link FPP on Katrina September 7, 2005 8:14 AM   Subscribe

Oh please....

If you can't succinctly explain your callout, you don't have a good callout.
posted by grouse at 8:16 AM on September 7, 2005

Katrina... yes, yes, important. We must "discuss", sure. But can we get the fuck back on track with following at least a few guidelines when it comes to making posts? A two-word, tagless FPP to a Yahoo news article is pathetic. There are plenty of open threads this article could have been appropriately linked. The blue is a wreck.

So's most of the country right now.

Sure, the blue is a wreck. Go back in the archives four years minus four days and see what a wreck it was, then. There's no need to make the gray a wreck, too. This callout would have been just as good made in the unnecessary callout thread directly below this one.

I removed that post and included a link to where it was being discussed in a thread from yesterday.
posted by jessamyn at 8:26 AM on September 7, 2005

Thank you jessamyn. I can understand how in the first week every little Katrina thing had to have its own link, but aren't we a bit past that now. There are literally dozens of active Katrina threads.
posted by OmieWise at 8:29 AM on September 7, 2005

Nice solution, jessamyn.

Good deletion.

Is the hide the bodies thread safe? Because there are a couple of links in the deleted thread which should continue to live.
posted by If I Had An Anus at 8:37 AM on September 7, 2005

Just repost the links in another thread.

Sensibility test: I wouldn't mind seeing amberglow get raped. Repeatedly. By the boil-covered thirty-inch cock of AlexReynolds, in the fiery pits of hell. Sorry if that offends your delicate sensibilities.

Rothko writes "Just doing your part to improve the scenery, I suppose."

Man, what the fuck was that? Alex, I tend to agree with you politically, but why do you do stuff like this when it comes to MetaTalk. Necker's comment here was completely legit.
posted by OmieWise at 11:52 AM on September 7, 2005

Omie: Alex asked Necker to carry him across a river. Necker said "But won't you irrationally lash out at me based on something I said months ago, that has nothing to do with the river we're crossing?"
And Alex said, "Don't worry. If I did that, we'd both drown."
As they crossed the river, Alex posted a link to some random comment that had enraged him months ago, derailing both Necker and Alex. As they sank, Necker asked him why he did that, when he knew it would be bad for both of them.
"Why do you ask me why I did it? It is my nature," he said, as the river carried them both off. "It is my nature."

Despite the fact that it's been presented completely out of context (and obviously has nothing to do with anything here), I'm pretty embarrassed about that comment. After further consideration, I really don't think I'd like to see that at all. Gross.

Hardly out of context at all, Necker. You're complaining about something you think is detracting from the quality of the site. I'm simply quoting your words back at you, which do the same.

Alex posted a link to some random comment that had enraged him months ago, derailing both Necker and Alex.

Klang, I wasn't a part of that thread, for what it's worth. I didn't complain to the admins. I didn't post a Metatalk thread about it. The comment didn't "enrage", but the lack of any criticism of it by everyone else in that thread was a sad commentary about people who usually claim to know better. /shrug

Nope, definitely unrelated.

Alex, I'm perfectly willing to agree with you that this callout was unnecessary in the midst of all the other Katrina-related callouts, but come on, man, unclench. I'm sure that in real life you're not half as batshit insane as you're starting to look here, so maybe consider that the posters who disagree with you are also only 35 to 50% as bad as they seem and make some allowances.

"Hardly out of context at all, Necker. You're complaining about something you think is detracting from the quality of the site. I'm simply quoting your words back at you, which do the same."
Uh... Except that the context for that quote was a seperate discussion on community standards. That's the context you're pulling it out of.
"Klang, I wasn't a part of that thread, for what it's worth. I didn't complain to the admins. I didn't post a Metatalk thread about it. I'm not sure why the scare quotes are on "enrage," but that comment and your reaction show what's supposed to happen. You didn't whine about it in that thread (I don't follow your posting history well enough to know whether you've brought it up before now), you didn't go to the admins, you didn't MeTa it. And you know what? That was the right decision, because in context, it was making fun of a similar comment about Bush. Pretending that the lack of criticism over that is somehow indicative of anything is really stretching your point beyond credibility. And to try to use it here to back up some charge of hypocricy is pretty shallow and easily dismissed on its face.

What a sad, sad bunch. Really. I'll be sure to bring this hypocrisy up next time someone invariably brings up something I've said in the past.

Are you suggesting that, in the comment's original context, the lack of criticism over it was somehow indicative of anything?

Would you have kept that comment so fresh in mind had it been someone else's rhetorical cock?

People get time-outs for offering to pay for the murder of other users here, even if they are joking about it. If violent rape is an exception, then I humbly withdraw my objection to Necker's post.

Good, you won't mind the following translation:

"Rape is hilarious!" -- Klangklangston

Oh, and if you want a real example of groupthink, yoyo, there's one for you.

Rothko : "People get time-outs for offering to pay for the murder of other users here, even if they are joking about it. If violent rape is an exception, then I humbly withdraw my objection to Necker's post."

I doubt violent rape is an exception so much as rape by mythical figures or really unlikely real figures is an exception.

"I hope you get raped by Papa Smurf" probably wouldn't get someone a timeout.
"You live in Atlanta, right? I've seen the news lately about that serial rapist the police are looking for. I hope he rapes you." probably would get someone a timeout.

Can't say for absolute sure, but that's my hypothesis.

Rothko: "Good, you won't mind the following translation:

Good, you won't mind the following translation of your extended whinge: "It's just not funny when things go up my butt! Why is everyone laughing at me when I say it's not funny up my butt? Why won't anyone take my butt seriously? Someone on the internet put my name into a dirty joke about the President and that's not funny because it's my butt! I can't take the digital sodomy anymore internet man! Please, won't someone protect me from the internets what wish me painful up-the-buttness? I can't handle myself on the internet! STOP LAUGHING AT ME!"

Dude, you read context like an autistic toddler.
posted by klangklangston at 9:53 PM on September 8, 2005

So in your fantasy world, do big words like context and autism mean something like groupthink? Because you don't seem to know what they mean at all.

Aww, Alex, I just can't wait for the thread three months from now where you bring this up again. Probably with some claim that this is where I show myself to be a homophobic fascist or something.

I forgot: when did this discussion become about you and not Necker?

Rothko : "But that wasn't the context of what was said."

True, but does that relate to the validity of the "impossible or fantastical rape vs. realistic rape" divide?

That is, a red car is not the same color as a blue car, but they both have to stop at stop lights.
A person with a passport is not the same as a person without a passport, but only one can easily enter a country.

In the first case, the examples are different, but it doesn't affect the conclusion. In the second, the examples are different, and it does affect the conclusion. Is the difference in context between the "smurf rape" and "satan rape" examples one that affects the conclusion, or not? It doesn't seem like it would to me.
