does the site seem slow to anybody lately, or is it me? there are long waits when i click on comments, or basically anything which loads from the database.

yeah, the traffic and current user loads are killing the database. I've got some time off starting next week, so I'll be working on some fixes.

Y'know...I was away in N. Carolina over the weekend, but I tried to get onto MeFi at one point and was redirected to "plastic."

That's what happens when you're calling in from a bank of IPs that Matt has blocked because they used to be getting used by someone obnoxious (like the notorious FreeSpeech).
