unrepentant self-link shivers me timbers September 19, 2005 10:48 AM   Subscribe

Arr Mateys - all ye hearty sea-dogs know me for a solid crewmember of the good ship "Flag and Move On" but an unrepentant self-link on Talk Like A Pirate Day is just too good to pass up. Perhaps the Good Captain can even leave the thread flapping in the wind a while, strung from the yard-arms, while we have our way with the pox-dripping dog and swive him from stem to stern?

Yeah what was that? I removed the post.

Indeed - he posted a self-link, and I at least felt that a excoriation in the piratical vernacular was both well-deserved and timely. I was quite enjoying the act, particularly inasmuch as the fellow seemed quite unrepentant, and thought it might be fun on Talk Like A Pirate Day for the general populace to take part as well.

unrepentant indeed. That little bastard was almost gleeful to self-link.

So, out of curiosity - do you net detectives investigate EVERY FPP, or only those that promote a product? I can never fathom why you always find these self-links.

Arr - I gutted the last man to accuse me of "net detectivery" ye thick-curled knot-tangling bilge-swimmer of a lubber! And left his twitching corpse in the gutter of Lisbon. Ye can join him if ye like, just keep flinging these accusations about like a loose cannon on a greased poop-deck, ye squid-humper!

I was actually interested in what he linked to, and was checking it out to see how it compared to LibraryThing. When I went back to the thread, I noticed the poster's name was the same.
posted by freebird at 11:19 AM on September 19, 2005

Not an accusation, an inquiry - self-posts are pretty much always discovered here, and I'm wondering why people bother to check FPPs, or what the criteria are. In general.
posted by tristeza at 11:23 AM on September 19, 2005

It's more important to get a self-link off the page when someone's 1.) trying to make a buck off their sites 2). signed up exactly 7 days ago and this was their first and only post and 3). knew what they were doing was wrong.

Yarr, or something.

There's something fishy with most every self-link. It's usually a mix of strange website + someone making money or selling something on the site + new username I've never heard of.

You check their history, see if they've contributed other stuff and oftentimes you realize that every comment linked to the same site that their post did and if you dig into their user page and the "about" page on the linked site, you often find some similarities.

But really it all starts with a hunch that goes "huh, why would someone think that was a good link, it kind of sucks" and then a few minutes later you realize it's because they built it themselves and were trying to get some traffic to the site.

Arr, now it's an Inquiry is it Tristeza? I'll tell you the same bloody thing I told the Spanish Inquisitors when they wanted me booty. It ends with "R" and starts with "Arr".

So what happens to people when they egregiously self-link like that? Do they automatically get their posting/commenting privileges suspended for a period of time or are they just out on their asses permanently?
