Periodic attempts to refresh bring up an error message

Periodic attempts to refresh MeFi/MeTa, etc. bring up an error message, 'The Document Contains No Data'. What gives?

It's a browser-generated message that you'll see when the Metafilter server is taking its 30 in the break room.

Does that mean that traffic is high, or that Matt is working on the server or does it mean that the server just rubbed one out and is cleaning up in the sink? Because this is the only site that does it.

That's apache/java/jrun dying on me. I was out to lunch and couldn't restart till I got back.

I've been tweaking the server a bunch lately and things are much better than they used to be, but still once every 48hrs or so, the java server dies. It usually happens while I'm asleep, resulting in a few hours of downtime.

I like "Document contains no data" better than "Jrun Guru Meditation Number 8400000E: Weird echo causing incomprehension".

My guess would be that the Document contains no data.

That's insane. I had no idea it was that bad. Is it not yet time to switch to tomcat or something? Couldn't be any worse.

This happens to me quite often at work, so I actually do my job for a while and then check back in. Never fails.

Matt, have you thought about setting up a scheduled task to restart EVERYTHING every two hours or so?

Or, alternatively -- a little script that polls to see whether MeFi is alive, then restarts everything if it's not?

Yeah, good point killdevil, I just setup a cronjob to restart jrun services every 12 hours. Hopefully that'll be enough to prevent most problems.
