Deletion Day October 25, 2005 4:45 PM   Subscribe

Oh, for the love of all that's holy, do we have to do this?

That deletion reason was classic.

You know, this is when I really want extra MetaFilter sections. It's so frustrating to have this limited to only three.

There was no reason for the deletion reason. At the very least it was unprofessional.

Maybe there was no deletion reason reason, but why was there no reason for the deletion reason? Was there also no reason for that? Or was there a good deletion reason reason reason?
posted by louigi at 5:05 PM on October 25, 2005

At the very least it was unprofessional.

Matt still has amateur status for seven more days.

I tend to get defensive like movilla, so my advice to him: go to sleep, wake up tomorrow, read the posting guidelines, learn, try again later. And put an e-mail address on your profile, you'll probably get advice and encouragement from some of the old pros here, and reasons why your post or parts of it were deleted from the admins. I usually do when I screw something up.

unprofessional? i didn't realize that we had to be all professional-like. guess i should start wearing my casual dress polo/khaki combo 'round here.

and that post? stellar example of professionalism, totally.
posted by raygun21 at 5:06 PM on October 25, 2005

Unprofessional? What profession is that, exactly?

I imagine Matt was offended by the finger-wagging tone of the post, which sucked.
posted by Mid at 5:06 PM on October 25, 2005

I'm off to bed. Surely I cant piss off as many people tomorrow as I achieved today.
posted by movilla at 5:08 PM on October 25, 2005

I'm totally, completely and most professionally naked.

I ask again: Where's the keg? Bong? Hookah? Hot tub? Tea room? Are those speakers humping or no-humping speakers? They look like humping speakers to me. Here, put on this CD.

Getcher tar and feathers right here! Red hot tar, just $9.95 a hogshead! Feathers just plucked from organically raised chickens! Indignation available out back, mention my name and you'll get a discount. Step right up!

Let us review.

He double posted a thread that was three posts old.

In doing so, he hectored the entire community in a condecending and sanctimonious manner. He double posted deliberately, as he felt that the tone of the earlier post was in sufficiently outraged

My initial posting was seriously wrong but I wanted to highlight more the pointlessless of it all that I felt was weak in the earlier posting.

When the double-post was pointed out, he insulted the poster, and suggested that said poster, along with all Americans, was incapable of independent thought.

He's like a guy who walks into a local watering-hole, insults the bartender, pinches the waitress's butt, changes the Big Screen from hockey to the Shopping Channel, rips the felt on the pool table, and then, when he is tossed out the door on his butt, wonders what he did wrong .

Sure, PareidoliaticBoy, but we don't have to be that same asshole in response.
posted by interrobang at 5:18 PM on October 25, 2005

Maybe If I Had An Anus could be that same asshole. Where are you, my dear Mr. Anus? We have the opportunity of a lifetime for you in aisle 10404.
posted by louigi at 5:24 PM on October 25, 2005

I'm not the one spouting scatolical references, Interrobang.

If iterating specific behaviour makes one an asshole, then I guess I'm guilty of that.

Perhaps I'd be better advised to emulate your own exemplary style?
posted by PareidoliaticBoy at 5:24 PM on October 25, 2005

Hey, ridiculing people - anyone - is fun!
posted by fire&wings at 5:25 PM on October 25, 2005

Don't emulate my style, PereidoliaticBoy; I've been in trouble around here myself.
posted by interrobang at 5:27 PM on October 25, 2005

I really don't feel sorry for this guy. I came here pretty clueless. I thought this was a site people posted cool links on, and there appeared to be conversations about those links. I didn't know shit about the community, the written and unwritten guidelines, shitstorm political threads, and Metatalk flameouts. But I managed to pay attention once I joined and post some things without without insulting people (mostly) and did not post stuff in inapproriate sections of the site. For God's sake, I looked around and listened some before I posted here.

I'm going to close this, but it sounds like movilla knows what went wrong and how to avoid it in the future. Sorry about the snarky reason, I was just making a joke out of the wording in the post.

It's no big deal, just try harder next time that you post and try not to tell people how to think or belittle them right off the bat.
