Lawrence, Kansas Metafilter Meetup number two!
posted by interrobang to MetaFilter Gatherings at 7:25 PM (43 comments total)

Here's my proposal: Friday, December 2nd, or Saturday, December 3rd.

Oh, and there *will* be beer. If there's not beer, I'm not going. Where we will drink this beer is up to you.
posted by interrobang at 7:29 PM on November 16, 2005

sure sure, i'll be there, wherever that is. personally, i like the taproom, but maybe others would like to go somewhere else? i'll be there, wherever it is. and can't you just bring your own beer?
posted by sleepy pete at 7:59 PM on November 16, 2005

The Taproom is fine with me.

Taproom or Replay. Saturday would be best for me, as I have every intention of getting blasted by a bunch of noise in a basement in Kansas City on Friday...

I don't see any listing for the Taproom on Saturday, but the Replay has the added benefit of Drakkar Sauna playing if we stay long enough (how long were we out last time? It was pretty ridiculous).

Regardless, I think I owe you kids a few pitchers...

Oh, plus there could be indulgence of cancer sticks at the Replay--I just don't know how cold it's going to be, even with the heaters and roasting solicitors outside.
posted by hototogisu at 8:33 PM on November 16, 2005

Then again, if it is even just a bit too cold for outside, the Replay-inside isn't going to work, so maybe the Taproom is better...

Let's go to Topeka!
posted by luckypozzo at 9:56 PM on November 16, 2005

Yeah! Meet-up at the Topeka Red Lobster! Ugh.
posted by hototogisu at 9:59 PM on November 16, 2005

Fascinating post, luckypozzo.
posted by interrobang at 10:06 PM on November 16, 2005

Okay, assuming it's the Taproom, is the 2nd or the 3rd better?
posted by interrobang at 10:20 PM on November 16, 2005

The Taproom or the Replay are both fine with me.
posted by luckypozzo at 10:30 PM on November 16, 2005

I won't actually make it if it's the 2nd...*wink wink*
posted by hototogisu at 10:31 PM on November 16, 2005

I can dig it.

(my vote for taproom and saturday)

I will try to be there!

(PS I love luckypozzo)

Tempting. Lawrence is not _too_ far from me.
posted by weretable and the undead chairs at 12:24 AM on November 17, 2005

I might be able to be there on Sat. I am supposed to find out about a job this week. It starts Dec. 1, and the first order of business would be heading to Boston to meet the partners.

If I'm in town, I'll be there. If I'm in Boston, I'll be employed.

I should actually be able to walk by then. I get the screw taken out of my leg on Nov. 29.
posted by sp dinsmoor at 12:27 AM on November 17, 2005

Awe thanks, Melissa. I love you too.

Tap Room sounds good. I can make it either night.

and can't you just bring your own beer?

Would that I could subject you all to hobo jug hard cider.
posted by cog_nate at 6:32 AM on November 17, 2005

Arkansas isn't too far away?? You're definitely going to need a place to stay afterwards...Lawrence isn't really that well-known for sobriety.
posted by hototogisu at 7:10 AM on November 17, 2005

boo. hiss.

I wanna come and play, but I'll be in Seattle.
posted by rocketman at 7:26 AM on November 17, 2005

It sounds like the Taproom on Saturday December 3rd is the better of the two nights. Let's do it.
I won't be there, but can't a guy lend a hand?
posted by safetyfork at 7:31 AM on November 17, 2005

Rocketman, do you want a Seattle meetup? It's been a couple months and we love to play. Bowling again maybe?
posted by matildaben at 9:11 AM on November 17, 2005

rocketman: I'll have some bourbon on the rocks for you (or maybe I'll just bring some isopropyl alcohol with me and do shots--same thing, right?)...
posted by hototogisu at 9:12 AM on November 17, 2005

Okay, sounds like Saturday, December 3rd, at the Taproom is the general consensus. Weretable, we'd love to have you. Also, we are a lurker-friendly group, right?
posted by interrobang at 9:53 AM on November 17, 2005

Yes.
posted by hototogisu at 12:14 PM on November 17, 2005

I'll go if we can go to the Hawk. I don't see enough 18 year old sorority girls.
posted by geoff. at 1:43 PM on November 17, 2005

Alright I'll go but if you guys ruin my Lawrence street cred, so help you god.
posted by geoff. at 1:47 PM on November 17, 2005

geoff., those girls are 16...
posted by hototogisu at 1:53 PM on November 17, 2005

hototogisu, what's going on in KCMO on Friday? Is there some First Friday event? Any notable DJ? What part of town... etc.
posted by geoff. at 1:53 PM on November 17, 2005

Also my "ID" expired two weeks ago, and I haven't been given any trouble yet -- will I experience any at the Taproom? I haven't had to worry about such things for several years, I forgot which places were cool and which weren't.
posted by geoff. at 1:58 PM on November 17, 2005

Ahh, it's a noise show at the sleeper cellar [it's just a basement]--one of Lawrence's more interesting musical veterans (This Is My Condition) will play, along with others I haven't heard of. I can probably find directions if you want.

Well, I've never heard of a door guy not taking an ID cause it's expired--most of them are laid back enough to realize that your AGE MIGHT NOT CORRESPOND TO THE OLD BIRTHDATE if you have an expired ID, and the Taproom would most likely be fine with it. Plus, I'm assuming we'll get there at 8 or something, and no one's at the door, and I've never been carded at the bar. Better still, it's all crazy townies, hipsters, and cracked grad students--totally safe from the vile frat-ness of the sandbar (or whatever the hell it is) next door...
posted by hototogisu at 2:06 PM on November 17, 2005

I didn't know there were places cool in Lawrence. My bar experience in Lawrence is limited to well drinks served in plastic cubs at the Wheel, The Hawk, Quintin's, etc. I stopped going to Lawrence for bars a year ago. After I started seeing KU basketball players walk around bars like they were actually something, I figured staying in KC was my best bet.
posted by geoff. at 2:38 PM on November 17, 2005

Ok, my comment above didn't make any sense, but you seem to have parsed it well.

Well, Lawrence has some great bars considering its size--I'd take the Replay and the Taproom over just about anywhere else I've ever been, big city or small. The trick is to go places frequented by those the KU basketball players picked on in high school.

vile frat-ness of the sandbar

How frickin' long has that Easter Island face been out front there? It freaked me out last I went to the Tap Room. I kept thinking, OK, just fire into its mouth and it'll blow up. Just like in Gradius.

Sorry, hit Free State a little early.
posted by cog_nate at 3:35 PM on November 17, 2005

There is a new Gradius in the works. Not sure if it will be on PS2 or PS3. I hope it has the Moia heads though, some recent Gradius games have not had them and the Easter Island stage is a Gradius MUST.

Wow, this is getting shoved off the page fast!

I'll post again when we're a couple of days from the meetup.

interrobang do you still have a big easily recognizable afro? Or will I wonder around aimlessly amongst the hipsters?
posted by geoff. at 4:49 PM on November 17, 2005

hototogisu is the one with the afro. I am a Standard Hipster with short hair.
posted by interrobang at 7:20 PM on November 17, 2005

Except that the afro has been cut--plans for my action figure have subsequently been cancelled.

Don't worry though, it won't get swinging until ten or eleven; we should be easy to spot.
posted by hototogisu at 8:06 PM on November 17, 2005

Wish I could be there.

I'm putting it on my calendar, hoping desperately that Manhattan-ites are acceptable. Thanks to the kind soul who emailed me with info - I missed this whole thread, again.
