Why was my thread deleted? December 3, 2005 3:03 PM   Subscribe

Downright rude.
Why was my thread on 03/12/05 on George Best's funeral deleted? If you're deleting threads then explain to the poster. I know Meta is primarily US-based but you have no idea who George Best represented. I'm really livid.

Your thread is here.

It was deleted I think because there was an earlier thread and it was still open.
posted by vacapinta at 3:08 PM on December 3, 2005

You said in the text of the post: "Yes, it was posted already." I don't really understand why you're surprised it was deleted -- it was essentially a repost. It sucks when your heroes die, though, so I'm sorry for that.

The other thread was only a week old. Any updates should have gone there.

mathowie was raised an Irish catholic and Best was an Orangeman.

Given the "it was posted already" acknowledgement, I especially like the self-righteous indignation over the deletion.

"This post was deleted for the following reason: double, posted previously"

the wording is pretty clear.
posted by matteo at 3:10 PM on December 3, 2005

movilla, I'm sorry for your loss, and everyone else's loss who loved George Best. However the other thread was still open. I sent you an email before I removed the thread to explain why it was removed.
posted by jessamyn at 3:12 PM on December 3, 2005

matteo: I dont think most users know how to find their deleted posts in order to see the reason it was deleted. Thats what movilla was asking about.
posted by vacapinta at 3:14 PM on December 3, 2005

Some points.

1. If a thread is deleted then an email should be posted to the originator explaining why it's deleted.

2. What are the rules about 'double postings' when you will get multiple postings about a similar subject within a few days. I've seen various Bush varients posts.

3. Mathowie? I'm an NI catholic and Best fan. What is your point?

4. M3ta should be evolving beyond it's current spec.
posted by movilla at 3:20 PM on December 3, 2005

as in, we need more double posts?

Mathowie? I'm an NI catholic and Best fan. What is your point?

Did I type "irish catholic"? Because I meant "reptilian."

1. I sent you an email before I removed the thread to explain why it was removed.

She did in fact email you.

2. As for bushfilter/newsfilter, people have a hardon for politics here and that's just the way it is, other subjects don't get the same leniency when it comes to 'doubles'. even so, a lot of bush related posts aren't technically doubles, you could just say he's a popular subject.

3. Relax, mathowie is actually head of his own religion, Mefi-ism.

4. Why?
posted by tweak at 3:26 PM on December 3, 2005

Starnge how I never seem to disagree with mathowie's deletions, yet I disagree with almost all of jessamyns.

Maybe there is something wrong with me.

What are the rules about 'double postings'

Are you serious? Have you really never seen a double-post deleted here before? That's hard to imagine from someone who's been a member since January. And double-posts about Bush- or Iraq-related news do in fact get deleted regularly.

p.s. Smart move right now would be to apologize for missing jessamyn's email and getting outraged for no reason. Your call, though.

Major Curley:

Tweak:
Matt is human. I'm sure he can only eat fish.

Back to my point. Can the deletee get an email?

Hi,

I sympathize that the death of George Best has been a huge loss. However, posting a second thread about it in just over a week with just a news update isn't really what MetaFilter is for. Feel free to include the new links you posted in the thread into the open post

Most of the "double" posts about other deaths tend to have new, interesting information about the person's life and works or unusual death news (such as HSTs burial wishes).

Movilla just posted a load of pictures.

Then again the mushroom thread didn't get deleted. I call conspiracy.

yeah, but no one ever took a body to a funeral home and was asked, "what's this?"
posted by pyramid termite at 4:03 PM on December 3, 2005

It was a crap post, but it wasn't a double, and it contained information that I'm sure a lot of people were not aware of (the funeral.) It was one of the largest British funerals of recent times. I don't really care about this instance, but there is a general slide in quality here, unfortunately.

So when we say "the Best of the Web", we don't really mean "the George Best of the Web"? Well, that's confusing. I started coming here for the George Best fan info, and now you're telling me that I've been mislead all along? I thought "George Bush" was code for "George Best", and that we've been talking about him everyday for the past few years. (Although I was a bit confused about how all that stuff about american politics got worked in there, but I always thought it was a metaphor)

alternativtely:

It's just one more way for the man (or in this case, the woman) to keep you down. An international conspiracy against anything Best-related. Yowza!
posted by blue_beetle at 4:19 PM on December 3, 2005

mischief, however, gets gobs of sympathy. I suggest posting about him, in the future.
posted by hototogisu at 4:19 PM on December 3, 2005

George Best was a wife-beating alcoholic asshole. Since the rest of the internet is ignoring that little fact, I'm glad that MeFi isn't obsessing over him. He's no great loss.

(And I'm Northern Irish, so I can't turn on the TV right now without him being all over it.)
posted by speranza at 4:20 PM on December 3, 2005

Downright rude. ... I'm really livid.

No one wants to be mean to you because you're in mourning, etc. But you've played this pretty rudely yourself.

Email notification is by the grace of the admins. It's good customer service. Not an entitlement. You make it sound like if you're going to go to all the trouble to drop a doublepost on their site, the LEAST they owe you is an email. Pshaw.
posted by scarabic at 4:27 PM on December 3, 2005

amro: Yes. I got no email regarded a delete post.

Speranza: Each to their own. Yes, George Best was a piss head but I remember him when he was good.

George Best, at worst, a scumbag but he was also someone that made me proud to be northern irish. Drunkard that he was, at least he wasn't Ian Paisley or Gerry Adams.
posted by movilla at 4:37 PM on December 3, 2005

scarabic: Surely deletions should automatically send an email to the poster. It makes life a whole lot easier. I could do the like in a Korn/Perl script.

Scarabic: why am I playing this rudely?
posted by movilla at 4:44 PM on December 3, 2005

I posted this double and got away with it based on it's context. I did get some schooling about my set up, and that was cool too. So please don't be offended. It's definately not an "America vs. The World" thing. Just an honest mistake on your part for doubling.
posted by snsranch at 4:44 PM on December 3, 2005

I think Bonaldi's going to be the most upset by this deletion.
posted by sgt.serenity at 4:44 PM on December 3, 2005

You're playing this rudely by calling into question the entire "spec" of the site, attributing the deletion to US-centrism, and by repeatedly demanding an email when you've already gotten one (and ignoring the post the admin made in this thread telling you so) and by barging into MeTa all "livid" and righteous instead of just reading your email and maybe posting a thread here for q&a and discussion about what happened.

Surely deletions should automatically

Surely, my foot. This is your expectation. Don't foist it on the admins and consider it obvious that they should just do as you say (especially when they already blippin' have).
posted by scarabic at 4:48 PM on December 3, 2005

scarabic: Surely deletions should automatically send an email to the poster. It makes life a whole lot easier. I could do the like in a Korn/Perl script.

So what if they did? You'd get an auto-email from a script but not from a person? *snort*

No one knows why you're playing this rudely, but that's not what you asked. You probably meant "how am I playing this rudely?", to which the only appropriate response "your inability to receive the same emails from the admins everyone else seems to get just fine is not this community's problem, so stop being an irrational dick about it."

scarabic: Read back. The US-centrism was an off-shoot. The key point was a lack of specifics for the deletion. It's not a big deal to have an automatic email that says a post is deleted. I could write the code in a few hours.
