stupid viral marketing. Light your torch and sharpen your pitchfork.
Forget the pitchforks. Just save that QT file repeatedly.

When do we evolve to suckerpunch marketing? You know, when you blindside someguy on the subway and, while he's out cold, you stuff his pockets with ads and coupons?

People should try harder. Re-using usernames? Single link posts to an ad? That just makes it too easy to spot.

How long before yonnage pops up and claims he didn't know that what he did was bad?

that was the funniest self-link pile-on that I've seen in a while, however, the self-link is now closed for business.

of course, it would totally be acceptable if their posts were instead about apple, blogger, creative commons, radiohead, or one's own ego.

Frankly, I'm surprised that this sort of bullshit doesn't happen more often. Now, who can help me with an automated script to repeatedly download that video file?

wget -r -l0 http://winelibrary.com/commercial.asp
For Windows users, you can grab wget for Windows here:
http://www.interlog.com/~tcharron/wgetwin.html
Not that I condone that kind of activity.

Would this work? If an account has never made a post before it gets held for review, sort of how anonymous questions work on AskMe. That would keep these obvious self linkers from ever getting the exposure.

I think that thread should be linked to as a warning for all potential self-linkers. As in, "MetaFilter assumes no responsibility for any jackassery that may result from a self-link."

Answering jonson's question from the thread: "Hey Plutor, how did you find the blog, and what specifically indicates that it belongs to this yonnage guy?"
It was just a Google Search for "yonnage winelibrary". This is the post that makes me think it's the same guy. He uses the first person to describe a link uploaded by a flickr user named yonnage. Maybe a coincidence, but MeFi isn't a court of law. "I am the Law!" -- JudgeDredd Mathowie

I wholeheartedly encourage everyone to wget because self-linking for profit isn't yet a capital offense. P.S. get banned asshole

Yah, puke & cry, except that fileburst.com sounds like one of those filehosting sites... y'know, a site that isn't affiliated with wine-boy. So I opted for the next best target.

It's an easy suggestion, yes, but it's a boring suggestion. The only thing these self-linkers are being exposed to is ridicule. Don't take that away from us. With the <big> tag gone, it's basically all we have left.
