Call for taglines being collected and posted somewhere December 5, 2005 10:39 PM   Subscribe

You know what someone more clever than me should do? They should cull all the " Metafilter: (insert quip here)" 's from the site that are found in so many posts. It'd be fun just to have them all, particularly out of context of the original thread. Then maybe another clever person could make a little randomizer java applet or firefox widget to make them appear on the top of the blue. That'd be nifty.

You know what someone exactly as clever as you should do? Do a search on google for the word "tagline" on metatalk.

I actually really like this idea. Maybe I'm just sick of the static taglines already.

MetaFilter: It breaks my mind.

Addendum: Please don't attribute any such found taglines to me. Yeah, even if I wrote them. I have enough shame in my life, thanks. Yeah, I know they can still be found and attributed. Let'em stay that way.

MetaFilter: Mushroom! Mushroom!

And yet, so much shame. And never quite enough. *wibbles off yonder, paradoxically*

dg did it, for a while, a while back. He stopped.

Maybe if you ask him nice-like, he'll put the page back up...

You had me up until the end of that sentence.

MetaFilter: particularly out of context

It's dead simple to do this in JavaScript.

Here's how to use a dynamically sized array... just add more entries, and it'll adjust the range for the random pick.

I could whip this shit up in like fifteen minutes if the MeFi database was open. If Mathowie dumped a CSV file on, say, a weekly or monthly basis, it'd be awesome. I have about a dozen ideas for little fun things similar to this one that are all held up by the facts that I hate spidering, and Mathowie probably hates being spidered, and MeFi's markup is a bitch to parse.

Matt: if you read this thread and think it's worth considering, IMDb does it pretty well. Here's their conditions of use.

MetaFilter: there's no ejaculation involved

Metafilter:Hands-Free Self-Propelled Pleasure

MetaFilter: It's completely sphincter operated!

MetaFilter: Uncomfortable but highly entertaining.

MetaFilter: You can also just put it on your mantle piece and call it modern art.

MetaFilter: My employer has to tolerate it in the workplace.

MetaFilter: I tried to post this before, but JRun ate it.

MetaFilter: Stimulating the male G-spot.

These aren't mine. They're from an old post about an anal stimulator.

Well having read those gems, I now think this is a bad idea.

Actually, just the tagline "MetaFilter: loading Java applet" would simulate the experience quite well.

Mathowie, please do consider dumping a CSV file or two on a weekly or monthly basis. Just the post and comment tables would be a great start. You're using MS SQL Server; you can automate this so very easily using DTS.

Please, please, please, I have to have this. I am desperate for this. This is the single best idea ever. Compared to this relativity was donkey crap. Compared to this Kant and Aristotle were an imbeciles. This idea is so good God must have given it to BrodieShadeTree, for surely no mortal man could have come up with it on his own.

Seriously, pretty please.
