eponysterical collection December 8, 2005 10:28 PM   Subscribe

Just for fun I have begun to collect so-called eponysterical posts and comments - that is, postings which are funny in light of the poster's user name. Emhpasis is on the word "begun," here. Please email more submissions as you come across them. Just for fun.

Any post in which I am not, in fact, kind to all would be appropriate...
posted by kindall at 11:06 PM on December 8, 2005 [1 favorite]

Heh. Not easy to find, that, though, is it?

On second thought, it seemed more appropriate to link to people's personal sites in the footer attributions (if they have listed one on the user page). That seem right?

What's to stop people from constructing comments to fit your definition?

While I'm here, does anyone remember a TV show from the 70s about a black family trying to make it in the projects while running Archie Bunker's dry cleaning business and working for Lou "Latke" Grant's cabstand?

I think it starred a young Noel Coward.

Jamie Farr,
That "Archie Bunker's dry-cleaning" bit kind of sounds like The Jeffersons.

While I love and applaud the idea, now we're going to have people intentionally doing this, just like the Metafilter: taglines, because it's "cool".

does it have to be a single comment? my all time favourite comeback was Witty asking stavros if he wore a chicken suit (maybe you had to be there) after the chicken commented that Witty wasn't. or are those also too direct in their references anyway?

This is what I get for trying to pick a nick that wasn't derivative of anything at all.

Good job scarabic. In fact, I remember a few of those posts as something I cracked a smile at. But surely this collection has potential for growth?

Oh, and: uplifting tidings, if you're crazy.

Emphasis is on the word "begun," here.

Yeah, I read that, I just didn't parse it. Will keep my eyes open! This is a great idea.

Some of these are barely eponymusing.

This exchange was a classic (from March 1/05)

My all-time favorite. The video is of a man grabbing, moving, and swirling sand, which is why the comment was so apropos.
posted by iconomy at 6:54 AM on December 9, 2005

Wow! I must have been on the sauce that night. It's nice to see that someone treasures my rantings, though. And for the record, I am not currently rocking the commando style today.

I thought it was kind of funny that Schroedinger saved a puppy from certain death as opposed to subjecting a cat to an uncertain death.

I got some feedback on this kind of thing here.

Unfortunately, my link is now dead. It showed a fountain sculpture of a little boy peeing, and was situated on a high mountain cliff giving the impression he was peeing into a river about 400 feet below.

To bad Metafilter can't "wayback" some of these links internally, but after 72 hours who cares anyway?

Quartermass - I could remember that one but couldn't find it. Thanks!

I need to work on the format a bit and see if I can incorporate some context without bogging it all down. Right now I've stuck with basically one-liners that make it fairly obvious what the yuk is. There are some true classics that require knowing what thread it was is, or what the previous comment was, etc. I need to work out a way to use those that is still lightweight. This should be pretty much the ultimate in light reading.

I doubt anyone will go to the trouble of trying to do this deliberately. If it's not spontaneous it won't be funny. And I'll just ignore it.

Alas, with a name like mine, it's hard to find any quotes that would fit your criteria.

Still, it's easier for me than, say, quonsar.

Anyone who suggests adding 'Pot' or 'Kettle' should be disposed of quickly.

This is a great idea, and I think I might have even suggested doing it in a comment way back when, but I was too lazy to do so. So props to scarabic.

At the moment I can't think of any. I only know I've seen literally dozens since first thinking of doing it that I thought, "yep, that would be perfect for the collection." But as I mentioned before I was too lazy to collect them. Then came the paradoxical effect that the more of them I saw, and didn't collect, the stronger the argument was for a collection, while at the same time the stronger the argument was for "why start NOW after you've missed having so many in the collection?"

I checked and there was already an FPP about Kwanzaa. I guess you'll not be hearing one from me, sorry.

This happens with so many things. There should be a name for this effect.

Can we submit ourselves?

I don't see why not, although, as with self-links, people are less likely to be ableto judge actual humor when it's their own work. The best ones seem to come out naturally, anyway, only noticed after the fact.

soyjoy - do some digging! I don't see how it's possible to 'miss' all the good ones. They're still funny, no matter how old they are. All you gotta do is email, bro! I'll do the rest.

I'm frantically searching the web for stories on Bechemel Sauces that are alcoholics, Tomato Gravys that moonlight as Salsas, or Butter Sauces that make a little on the side as lubricants. I'll keep you posted if I find anything.
