This is pointless and overtly personal assholery. It isn't enough to take shots at him in that thread, you felt it was necessary to exhibit your disagreement by dragging him over here?

This site could do with less personality conflict, not more.

Here is hoping Matt deletes this thread.

Well, while he's never been one to hold back, a lot of people were also addressing comments directly to jonmc. Seems to me he's within his rights to answer any and all of those comments, so 45 isn't really that inflated, or at least didn't happen in a vacuum.

Then why point it out?

Did you call out the people who made a hundred or so comments in that 9622 MeTa thread?

Perhaps this was intended for some other purpose, but it sure seems to me that the intent is to call for castigation or ridicule of him for trying to participate in a thread.

That to me seems like personality conflict, and it sure seems like it should be deleted because it should not be fostered here.

Perhaps your motive is good-intentioned, but I don't see it.

the thread was a gem, this is promising too.

I loved that the usual white suspects were sooooooooooo quick to point out that racism, of course, doesn't exist (I bet they also have black/Jewish/insert-ethnic-or-religious-minority-here friends).

jon was a bit forceful in his defense of the usual jonmc pov, ie that the whole world takes itself a bit too seriously except jonmc, but it wasn't that bad. jon, for all his quirks, is a remarkably civil presence here. and is certainly not a troll, unlike others certified trolls or allegedly reformed trolls who are always so quick to derail threads with various accusations of assholery.

personally, I thought the O'Rourke piece was shit. and that this "funny" image

can find a perfect place in neonazi propaganda leaflets.

but then, unlike others MeFi members, I don't find the word "nigger" to be funny, either.

Lola G: I appreciate the backup but some of the criticism I've recieved and will recieve has it's points. As far as diversity goes, I always thought that one of the strenghts of the internet was that we had to judge someone on their ideas, since we didn't have the usual visual cues to tip our prejudices. I got a taste of this at a meetup when I got to meet a very erudite MeFite whom I had long admired. The MeFite in question turned out to a black guy and I found myself surprised by that. Unconcious prejudice rearing it's head. But no sense beating myself up about it, just file it away as a lesson learned. That's the kinda thing I was saying that everyone was guilty of. Not a dismissal of the topic.

Now let's all join hands and sing My Name Is Larry.

I'm not necessarily backing you up, jonmc. More the fact that you question the party line...so to speak.

We can all sit back and be outraged by the thread. Who is going to assert that racism is good? We all know racism is bad -- well most of us do. What kills me is the self-righteous outrage.

Rather than sit back and examine what is being done and why -- we type in these boxes and express how great we are because we aren't the racist asshole who wrote the piece. And we aren't the absurd jonmc, patron of the working man, whose viewpoint is quickly written off as his party line...not given a slice of credibility.

You merely mentioned that all of us have racist tendencies and the shitstorm began. (God I hate that term but nothing else came to mind here).

I'm just saying that just holding your ideology of a pristine racist-free mankind to your chest isn't going to create that ideal. This is the reason "fill in the blank" and PJ O'Rourke are the laughing stock of every non-caucasian race and non-US nation. Still, we (the royal we) and our ilk assert our outrage and hold ourselves out as the great bastion of change.

But we never take that step back to truly examine what is happening in our cities, to our people -- in fact and in print. Until we do and we start questioning why PJ O'Rourke would write this (beyond he is a racist pig) and question where it comes from (rather than just "It's so obviously racist and evil") RACISM WILL THRIVE.

Just sayin' so and typing in boxes ain't going to change a thing.

AND I know I'm not perfect. But I challenge it with myself and where I can in my "world" every day.

The school received its charter in 1812 before the city of Miami existed. You may stick that in whatever pipe you want and smoke it. I wasn't making a snipe at all, simply pointing out that expert evidence contradicted your summarily stated opinion. You were the one throwing around "borderline retarded" and "anti-intelligent" like you thought they added something to the debate, on top of continuing to ignore the actual argument made by dios, IRFH, and myself. That's anything but clear and polite, at least in my book.

Monju, you accused me of dismissing something out-of-hand; that is an ad hominem, and hence a snipe. I called an idea borderline retarded and anti-intelligent. This is not an ad hominem and not a snipe, or assholery.

That the evidence is expert evidence is not relevant. There's considerable "expert evidence" suporting, say, intelligent design, which can and should be summarily dismissed. Race is not merely a cultural construct, and I don't think that it can be rationally argued otherwise -- but this is not a MeTa discussion.

on top of continuing to ignore the actual argument made by dios, IRFH, and myself.

I, on the other hand, think that I addressed your argument more than adequately. Not that it matters; it wouldn't be 'assholery' to ignore a point made.

And, as always, I disagree with the notion that responding to a flame (such as Klang's or SweetJesus') with a flame is 'assholery' at all. Hence, my reponse to you in this thread: you call me out by name, while I think that I have behaved not merely appropriately but admirably, with one sole exception, that of my own opening snipe against jonmc in my first post to that thread -- a comment that I regret having made, especialy as I called out Rothko in the thread for doing the same to dios.

Nobody's perfect.

I agree with jonmc - there is a lot of hypocracy when it comes to the "isms" - be it sexism, racism, ageism whatever. I've met so many "defenders" of minorities - white, middle-class do-gooders - who want to ban Christmas because they think it offends non-Christians, or hire exactly the right amount of black people in a work-force to represent their proportion of the population as a whole (as opposed to simply finding the best people whatever their colour). Basically, the people who are obsessed with gender or race tend to be the ones pointing the finger, not the ones being pointed at.

I think jonmc is simply saying that we are tribal, and relate to "our" group (be it our sex, or our race) before we relate to other groups. This is just a cultural thing. Look at how minorities live in western countries. Most hang with their own race. I don't think THAT is racist - it's just being tribal / a liking of familiarity. We're so hysterical about racism these days though - so I guess unless we hang out with every creed and colour, we're just "ignorant" and "fearful".

I think the human race needs to be cut some slack from liberal hysteria.

SOL, my suggestion that you dismissed the argument out-of-hand is not ad hominem in the least. It's a description of your response in that thread, and has nothing to do with you as a person. Moreover, you did not address the argument at all, much less adequately; you simply called it "borderline retarded." If you didn't want to discuss it, you should've just ignored it, instead of engaging in namecalling.

As for whether race is a cultural construct, I have no dog in that fight. I will, however, disagree that the expert opinion on the matter is equivalent to the so-called experts supporting intelligent design. I know plenty of biologists with real credentials and experience in the field who believe, based on the available evidence, that race is not a proper biological or genetic concept. I understand that there are contervailing opinions; my only argument is that there is a real debate about this subject, unlike intelligent design. Calling the argument "borderline retarded" is simply not accurate. If you have a good response to the ideas contained in the article to which IRFH and dios linked, I would like to hear them.
posted by monju_bosatsu at 1:52 PM on December 29, 2005

SOL, my suggestion that you dismissed the argument out-of-hand is not ad hominem in the least.

It most certainly is. Is it a comment on the argument or is a comment on the nature of the arguer? It is the latter, and hence an ad hominem, by definition.

Moreover, you did not address the argument at all, much less adequately; you simply called it "borderline retarded."

Which is, by definition, addressing the argument, and, I think, more than adequately so.

If you didn't want to discuss it, you should've just ignored it, instead of engaging in namecalling.

I did discuss it; I made it very clear that my opinion was that it was complete and utter bunk. I was not interested in discussing *why* I thought it was bunk. I'm still not.

If you have a good response to the ideas contained in the article to which IRFH and dios linked, I would like to hear them.

I have already provided a good response: the ideas are borderline retarded. That you don't consider this to be a good response is a given (nor that the ideas are equivalent to ID), but reasonable men can disagree.

In any case, I have engaged in no rampant assholery, in my opinion. That was why I responded to your callout. You could have, I think, picked a better example to call out, in particular because it should be obvious by now that I will always respond to such callouts.

his repeated and unnecessary attacks on other members

None of my repeated attacks on other members were unnecessary; they were necessary and, in my opinion, welcomed by the moderators. I did, after all, flag Klang's and SJ's posts. Since they were not deleted, I must assume that it is therefore desirable to engage in such 'debate'.

And none of my attacks had anything to do with whether or not race is merely a social construct, because calling the idea borderline retarded (etc.) is not an attack on other members, as has been more than adequately explained in the simplest terms possible.

And, yes, you're right, I'm not going to talk about why the ideas in question are anti-intelligent, here or elsewhere. Giving time to that side of the debate verges on being morally wrong in exactly the same way that the ID crowd do not deserve to be heard.

Thanks for the numerous parting snipes in your latest post, by the way. I particularly enjoy watching hypocrisy in action.

Simply because you don't agree with me doesn't mean that I'm trolling. I'm certainly not trying to provoke an emotional response. I invite you to show me where the ad hominem is, as well.

To paraphrase the man, that phrase does not mean what you (and he) think it means.

And here's the kicker: whether or not race is merely a social construct is absolutely irrelevant to whether or not people are discriminated against because of it. It's a red herring. It has nothing to do with the original thread.

You're right, though, you can't win, but not because it's a loser's game. You can't win because it isn't a game.

And just because two people can't see everything said by thousands of people doesn't mean you are getting explicit permission and kudos for doing what you do. I hear you, Matt, but I don't understand how I can apply what you are suggesting. It's your site and your rules, and as the owner of the site you may apply the rules indiscriminately or fairly, or evenly or disproportionally, or in any fashion you like, making new rules as you go long if you so desire and ignoring others, showing bias to some and against others if you like, in any combination thereof.

So the only indicator -- the sole indicator -- of what is proper behaviour is what ends up not being deleted. Even now, unprovoked attacks directed at me that I had flagged are still up in that thread and in this one. How am I to not think that such posts are not merely appopriate, but encouraged?

So now I don't know what to do (and I don't really care if people have complained about me; that's merely argumentum ad numerum and not what I consider compelling evidence of poor behaviour). You have told me that a certain type of behaviour is inappropriate, but you have not shown that such behaviour is inappropriate. You haven't called out Klang or SweetJesus. "Flag and move on" appears to either not work or be biased against me. There appears to be disconnect between what you wrote above and how this and other thread has been moderated, unless your implication is that I should not retaliate against unprovoked attacks, and that those attacks will not be deleted if flagged.

If that's the case, I hope the five bucks paid for some of your expenses, and wish you will in your future endeavours.

But I'll rise to your little outburst.
You have no ground to stand on on the issue of respect
This has nothing to do with why people should or should not respect you. It's not to do with how you need to gain my respect. It's not even about what I think should engender respect. It's a fact. Some people on this site get away with more because they've earned respect. Simple.

hint of a whiff of the right
What? Is that actually English?

Don't ... advise me on how to behave
Hey; I take my licks when I act like an arse. People generally like and listen to me despite my (I would say) infrequent trolling. I'd say that makes me a perfect candidate for listening to.

Finally, given that you didn't really respond to my first point, I gather that you agree with it 100% And you agree that the administrators aren't deliberately trying to make it difficult for YOU!

s-o-l, solving your problems is pretty simple. Be the bigger person and ignore other members that aren't engaging in a discussion of the topic at hand. If someone wants to make something about you, don't let them by simply not engaging them.

You present your problems like something that I can only solve by reprimanding every person that has ever mentioned you by name. The same rule applies to all -- please stick to issues not personalities -- but every now and then people stray from that and attack others.

The bottom line is that the proper response isn't to come out swinging at others. The proper response is to move on.

jon, the grandiosity isn't as pronounced as I would expect in npd. Both, however, are pretty much untreatable. The lack of empathy is consistent with either condition. One would have to have some history of sexual relations to get a really firm diagnosis. A history of exploitive relationships would not be inconsistent with the subject's observed behavior so far and npd tends towards the masocistic.

Say, SOL, do you find this arousing?

That doesn't follow, fandango. Whether or not I consider you a person is not relevant. The ashes don't belong to you, so you should treat them with care, as you would with anything that belonged to someone else; I assume that you consider me a person even I don't consider you one. I'm not the one making (rhetorical) use of your property, so how I view you is moot.

Warbaby, like 90% of the Western world, I've had therapy. There's nothing wrong with me, and, interestingly, I asked a therapist specificaly about BPD. Most laypersons' psychological diagnoses are wrong; most people meet most of the criteria for most disorders at some point or other. For example, I once called jonmc a sociopath. I was wrong. He's just a jerk -- but I shouldn't fault him for that. He's also a hypocrite (deriding me for calling him a sociopath while claiming that I have NPD), which I can fault him for, but that's neither here nor there.

And the evidence based on your behaviour here is that it's you getting some kind of perverse sexual pleasure, not I. But, please, keep it up. I don't find this arousing, but it is endlessly entertaining.

As such, it is not necessarily immoral to ignore the plight of people halfway around the world whom you will never meet. There's nothing sociopathic about that, and I think you'd be hard-pressed to find any sociologist who would disagree with me.

Likewise, I'm never going to meet you. And yet, even though I don't really consider you a person, I'm treating you a helluva lot better than you are treating me, whom I assume you do consider a person.

Who, then, is the sociopath? My money's on you.

The worst thing about this obviously intentional flame-out is that solid-one-love isn't even all that entertaining. I mean, jeez, give me minya over this any day.

He practically flamed out a couple of months ago, but it didn't happen. Now he has this on his user page:

I'm approaching the end of my participation on MeFi, at least in the blue and grey. I paid my five bucks to answer a question in AskMe, and it's mutated into some hydra-headed continual flamefest with social fucking retards.

Try harder, man. If you're going to go out with a bang, say more crazy stuff. Don't just post comments that consistently reveal that you're just an asshole. Exchange a penis-beheading, or something.

I have been here a lot longer than my present user number would imply. This forum will rock on just fine-we had just as many arguments and pissing matches in 2001 as we do now.

No we didn't. We have many more arguments today than 2001. With so many more members, that's not surprising.

If you are not choosing to be a member of this community I question your reason for being here.

Nonsense. Nothing says you have to regard mefi as a community. You don't have to go to meet ups, and email each other, and send christmas cards. You CAN, and I'm sure there are quite a few members who's lives revolve around metafilter, but it's certainly not a requirement.

Members need to realize that there is a human on the other end of the screen, and treat them with respect. That doesn't mean they have to believe in any community. As long as you're not out to cause damage, there's nothing wrong with seeing metafilter as words on a screen.

newsflash, genius: many of us have met. a few people here are regular drinking buddies of mine. Others who I haven't met in the flesh have helped me (through emails and IM"s through some dark times). One person here even helped me get the job I currently hold. Another helped me get my apartment. These pixels are produced by flesh and blood beings.

Good for you jon. A huge majority of members will never meet. And to others it is just pixels, and nothings wrong with that. It's your choice to make a website and it's members such a big part of your life. Doesn't mean everyone else will feel the same.

Sorry, justgary, but that just ain't so. Even if you never meet the people on the other side of those pixels, they're still there. I'll be happy to cop to the fact that I've flown off the handle with people here, but it always bugs me, and usually I'll make an attempt to remedy the situation, and in several cases (rothko, matteo, and interrobang come to mind) it's been to my benefit. It's got nothing to do with making mefi the "center of your life." It's about respect for common humanity, that's all.

You haven't ever treated my like anything before, ever. I don't know if that's better or not. Considering that was trying to help you, I'd say that I'm treating you better than you're treating me.

I do consider you a person, and your statements in this thread indicate that you have some weird disassociative problems with realizing that the people you're interacting with here on metafilter are actually people.

I don't like it when people treat this community the way you're treating it. I've made personal attacks in the past, and I feel real, actual remorse for it, because I've later gotten to know them, and really realized that they're real, actual, goddamned people.

Why bother posting on this site, if you're not willing to realize this? Why not put your energy into somewhere much more anonymous like Fark, where there are tons and tons and tons of members, and your comments might hurt someone who hardly cares?

SOL, you are a curiosity, and as such I am simply gathering info from a primary source. I started out trying to help you get along better here, and as you continued to post I was astounded at the view you have of all of us.

As to the word community: I do not mean that we are all around a campfire singing kumbaya or going out for beers or sending each other mix cds. I mean that we are a collection of individuals who post in this place and interact with each other for better or ill. As such we should treat each other the way we would if we actually coexisted in a neighborhood. Pixels on a screen maybe, put pixels put there by a PERSON.

Finally, I will care if I want to. I need no reasons.

Jon, the "center of your life" comment wasn't a put down. If I didn't live in the middle of nowhere I would be up for a meetup. I've talked on the phone to people I've met on a community site. It's all good.

But you can have "respect for common humanity" without seeing metafilter as a community. I haven't really followed SOL, but if he checks the front page, sees a link, reads the link, and comments on the link, as long as he's respectful, there's nothing wrong with that.

You can be respectful and debate without thinking metafilter is family. One doesn't have to depend on the other, as some seem to be claiming.

Fandango: it's hard to explain. Until someone has entered my perception, they're nebulous at best. As an analogy, like Schroedinger's Cat; they are a quantum uncertainty. I cannot conceptualize any specific individual in any rhetorical village in Mali. Whether it is true or false that anyone lives there just doesn't matter.

The rhetorical starving kid is less than a "conceptual person", because I can't even label an individual. You, for example, have a label. You can be abstracted as an entity. This makes you more of a 'person' than the Rhetorical Malian Kid. But you're still outside the scope of my proximal morality; I don't have to care about you, even to the extent of hether or not you exist now or will exist tomorrow. You don't have full personhood in my worldview.

This is an unusual POV, but I don't think it's an aberrant one. I care about people I know. I don't care about people I don't know -- and don't necessarily consider them "people". Shrug.

That's the kind of statement from which very bad things spring.

Perhaps. It immediately springs to mind that dehumanizing people is useful in many circumstances and horrific in others. But this is just a frickin' discussion forum. It's not like we're at war.

Justgary, I think the salient point that people are trying to make is that they are offended that I do not respect other posters because I don't consider them to be people. I think this is a red herring, since my lack of respect is not really relevant. I have said many times that I have never thrown the first punch; when someone takes a shot at me, that shows a lack of respect. Why, then, should I show respect in kind? Even if I did consider the attacker a person, they still wouldn't be worthy of respect. And any post of mine that is not responding to an attack (since I don't throw the first punch) will therefore give the appearance of respect, so whether or not I am actually respectful doesn't matter. Like sincerity once you can fake it, you've got it made.

Taking the time to compose extensive and elaborate insults for someone is hardly the act of not caring or failing to see them as people: review your last few volleys on the O'Rourke thread, specifically those aimed at klangklangston and SweetJesus.

I mentioned earlier in the thread that I disagree with that sentiment. I was raised to always respond with more force than is thrown at you. It has served me well. Usually.

And this is kind of a red herring, too. I have spent the vast bulk of this thread responding calmly and politely to a torrent of invective, stalking, perversity and oboxiousness the likes of which hasn't been seen here for weeks. If I respond to a flame with a flame, we get more flames. If I respond to a flame with a calm, reasoned response, we get flames. If I ignore the flame completely, we get more flames from the same person who is incensed that I didn't respond to his flame.

No matter what happens, no matter how I respond, even if I cut it off and go eat dinner, the ritualized (s)elf-abuse will continue. It is inevitable. We've seen it time and again.

Jonmc, interrobang and his ilk are not interesting in reasoned, respectful discussion. They never have been. Whether or not I consider them people is a red herring. They're just here to take long, protracted dumps wherever the can, tugging out their self-importance to levels that I could never hope to achieve in my wildest dreams, even if I dreamed that way.

What're you trying to say, cupcake? That I talk too much? I knew that. I'll also cop to being a drunk, having a bad temper, and having a tendency to dive into conversations that are over my head. I'm just fumbling through life like most people and I'm perfectly comfortable admitting to that. And most other people here are, too. I've gotten into knock-down drag out brawls with matteo and dame, yet before my surgery and when my uncle died this week they sent me kind, heartfelt messages. Same with fold_and_mutilate, amberglow, interrobang, rothko, and many other people I've angrily argued with. I'll take their flawed but honest humanity over your smug sanctimony any day of the fucking week.

Jon, that's probably the nicest thing anyone's said to me here. I appreciate it and tip my hat to you for showing so much class in putting up with s-o-l.

solid-one-love: I don't really see the people here as "people"

At the risk of belaboring the obvious, that explains everything. You see, s-o-l, we really are people. Yes, even you. If you would* could choose to act accordingly we wouldn't have threads like this one.

You might want to find another place to hang around. Say, Neopets? See, they really aren't real. They won't can't care how you treat them.

jon, the grandiosity isn't as pronounced as I would expect in npd. Both, however, are pretty much untreatable. The lack of empathy is consistent with either condition.

I know lack of empathy is usually associated with BPD, but I've known a couple of people with BPD who were very caring, sensitive and did display empathy for others. That doesn't mean they weren't tortured and couldn't be complete tyrants, but I saw them go out of their way to help or care for other people who they barely knew (much more than I would, and I'm not a psychopath or a narcissist...I think). Of course, you could chalk that up to their need for acceptance, but the situations I witnessed didn't seem to hold any rewards for the BPD person, and in some instances they never even saw the person that they helped ever again./armchair shrink

And guys..this pile on on S-O-L leaves a really bad taste in my mouth. In the past I've seen him make some very lucid points (and be a mensch), and also not be the most amiable character sometimes, but I think you've made your point. This is ugly.

Is it so crazy not to think of everyone here as a person? When some posters are really just sockpuppets or trolls and others are manufacturing a personality just to get a reaction?

I mean, of course comments here are made by people, but sometimes the "person" talking isn't real or is so exaggerated as to be more of a caricature than a person. So treating everyone with the deference or respect that you would treat a people who weren't playing such games, while being a safe and humane default mode, may also be a little naive.

man o man this was both better and more disappointing then I expected. If his believes are accurately stated then I think youse guys nailed it. perhaps full blown sociopathology but definitely borderline to that. there is always some level of distancing yourself from those not immediately present, but to refuse to acknowledge that the only real people are those that you know personally is talking a philosophical standpoint to to the absurd level.

Of course this is all predicated on a few things... 1 that this whole thread wasn't just an exercise in SOL baiting everyone, and 2 THAT HE IS A REAL PERSON.

Who knows, but on face value he would make an excellent killing machine, nobody is real and you have to escalate violence.
