Oh, he's just asking who else is a fan of Steely Dan, the annoying 1980s prog-rock band. And here we were expecting a falmeout or something.

The reference is to Steely Dan ('Any Major Dude Will Tell You'), but - hey, I like pancakes.

Prog-rock? A history teacher should know better. Yes, Genesis, ELP = prog rock. Steely Dan might be lots of things but prog-rock ain't one of them.

It's also worth noting that by 1980, their career was more or less over.

Listen, timeistight, find out for yourself. I don't wanna do your dirty work, no more.

This should have been posted to AskMe first, then brought over here and ridiculed as chatfilter, followed by its deletion from the green.

Hi.
This is weird.

your point being?

Just pointing out that the characterization "annoying 1980s prog-rock band" is wrong in almost every way. Except possibly for "annoying", but I'd say that's the fault of classic-rock radio programmers, not the band.
posted by jjg at 5:09 PM on January 16, 2006

jonmc, his point being that LarryC called Steely Dan an "80's prog rock band" when in fact by 1980 their career was more or less over. It helps if you read all the comments, not just some.

That "Blackleg Miner" is great stuff, though.

(I should note that I'm not a huge Steely Dan fan, especially since any sophisticated restaurant I go to in New York seems to think that playing Steely Dan is a sign of being 'adult' or something, but their best stuff ('Dirty Work,' 'My Old School," Reelin' In The Years," "Do It Again,") hold up quite well 30 years down the line.

and even though I'm a fan of a lot of music that's been branded with that label, I hate the term 'classic rock' with a passion.

I liked how Monster Movie was New Wave a good decade before anyone bagan using the term.

Oh, wait. you're all talking about Steely Dan, not Can.

Bastards.
posted by Smart Dalek at 5:37 PM on January 16, 2006

The term 'New Wave' caused no end of confusion among a lot of people in the 80's, Samart Dalek. Me and my heavy metal freinds heard it applied to shit like Duran Duran & Flock Of Seagulls and thought that's what it (and by extension, punk) meant. Some of us learned that punk meant stuff we actually liked, like te Ramones and Bad Brains, and eventually realized that New Wave meant great stuff like Elvis Costello and Dave Edmunds. But the indiscriminate claiming of that label caused some problems.

I like Steely Dan but I'll never admit it again if the phrase "Dan man" comes into common usage.

jon - you hit the nail on the head. The term became an easy throwaway in no time.

hydrophonic - aound my area, Steely Dan fans used to be called Fagin's kids.

I love Steely Dan and I know I just destroyed my indie cred but what the hell.

'cred' is an overrated sham that keeps people from enjoying great art of all varieties.

The Minutemen (in the liner notes of Double Nickels On The Dime) namecheck Steely Dan, Blue Oyster Cult and Van Halen. That (along with the incredible music therein) endeared me to them.

It doesn't get more "indie cred" than that. Steely Dan first turned me on to Duke Ellington, too, with that cover of "East St. Louis Toodle-Oo" on Pretzel Logic. Any band that sits in the middle of a Duke Ellington-Minutemen connection is fine by me.

terrapin, see you in Muswellbrook.

Dan mans are missing out if they're not giving a good listen to Two Against Nature. Some of their best lyrics and solos are on that album.
