Vancouver.Metafilter.com/Meetup? Feasability, Logistics... Interest?

I'm interested.
posted by timeistight at 8:32 PM on January 23, 2006

Thanks timeistight - I was waiting until someone posted here before opening discussion =)

I've been trying to gather profiles/contacts for Vancouver area mefites. I know that seawallrunner has some other's tagged, and mathowie's implementation of lat/long is going to help (but not everyone has opted to state their locations). I'll probably make a new gmail account and send out bcc queries to that list tomorrow...

Depending on the number of people, I was thinking either the King's Head in Kits or The Jolly Taxpayer downtown.

Or would people rather have a gathering somewhere that isn't a (nice, quiet, understanding) dive bar?
posted by PurplePorpoise at 8:42 PM on January 23, 2006

count me in, pending logistics. Both of your venue suggestions sound good.

thanks for the heads-up in the election thread!
posted by jeffj at 8:52 PM on January 23, 2006

Jolly Taxpayer is shut down, getting turned into (what else) a new glass & steel tower. The next good bar in the area is Smiley's on Pender at Howe.
posted by Salmonberry at 8:53 PM on January 23, 2006

I'm in, depending on the date. Friday or Saturday evenings work best for me.
posted by birdsquared at 8:59 PM on January 23, 2006

aw man, I was waiting until 11:11PM tonight to see who would post this thread.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 9:01 PM on January 23, 2006

I might be into it.

Jeffj, I knew a Jeff Johnston in Victoria. You ever live there?
posted by solid-one-love at 9:06 PM on January 23, 2006

Sorry mathowie =) ... (yeah, I was kinda pleasantly surprised on getting a cool number, apologies for wasting it on an opinion thread).

Salmonberry - dang, the Taxpayer hosted a couple of very successful Fark parties. Couldn't pull Smiley's from google, I'll take your word that it's a cool place, maybe drop by and check out the place and maybe talk to management (although I doubt we'll have 30+ Vancouver mefites show).

jeffj, birsquared - you're on the to-update list.

solid-one-love; you're a Vancouverite - you in? (If so, you can send me contact info via my profile addy)
posted by PurplePorpoise at 9:14 PM on January 23, 2006

I'm up for a meetup. Downtown is my location preference but Kits is also okay.

That's sad news about the Jolly Taxpayer - I loved that place!

*jumps in, jumps out, jumps in, jumps out*

Might come! When? I'd prefer saturday night, or even sunday evening.
posted by stray at 9:29 PM on January 23, 2006

sanitycheck, stray - two more people who I'll try to peer pressure into coming to a meetup when it's finalized. =)
posted by PurplePorpoise at 9:35 PM on January 23, 2006

Do we have a date? I'd like to come, but a date would be good.
posted by antifreez_ at 9:40 PM on January 23, 2006

antifreez_ - I remember a couple of aborted attempts at Vancouver mefite meetups (I may be thinking of something else; I remember doing a search when I first joined and didn't find a lot of enthusiasm), this thread was to gauge how many Vancouver-mefites there were.

I've managed to tag over 30 people - far more than I'd had expected.

It's the 23rd of Jan now - if everybody isn't voted out already...

28rd of January
4rd of February

??

solid-one-love recommended Moose's Down Under. Despite the comic sans, I'm developing an affection for the place (have to stop at the lab early tomorrow, will check out these places [and any other recommendations] afterwards, maybe for lunch. And a few drinks.).

Anyone else have preferences/suggestions for a place?
posted by PurplePorpoise at 9:58 PM on January 23, 2006

I'll be in Whistler on the 28th, but the 4th might work for me. To be honest I prefer a Friday or even a weeknight, but could probably swing a Saturday if that's what everyone else wants.
posted by sanitycheck at 10:10 PM on January 23, 2006

I am in!
Any date on a weekend works for me.
As for location, my preference is also Downtown or Kits.
posted by lenny70 at 11:44 PM on January 23, 2006

I'm in (contingent a little bit on parenting responsibilities). Downtown or Kits works for me.
posted by Turtles all the way down at 12:05 AM on January 24, 2006

hopefully you kids will stay out late. i work in film and wont be back till like midnight. it would be nice to meet some metafilterers.
posted by cascando at 12:11 AM on January 24, 2006

My weekend starts on Mondays so I couldn't stay long, but I'd pop in for a couple of cold ones on a Saturday.

The 4th would work for me.
posted by PareidoliaticBoy at 12:36 AM on January 24, 2006

I'd probably be in, as long as it's after this coming weekend, since I'm out of town. Pretty much any night is fine for me though.
posted by vernondalhart at 12:41 AM on January 24, 2006

i'd be in pending quantity of schoolwork proximate to actual date. prefer kits, friday/saturday night.
posted by juv3nal at 1:25 AM on January 24, 2006

smiley's is great, but I'd vote against moose's down under.

I couldn't make the 28th, I might make the 4th, but I'd prefer a friday, say, the 3rd.

solid-one-love - it weren't me, the closest i've lived to victoria is nanaimo, for one summer many years ago. It was a pretty good summer though!
posted by jeffj at 1:45 AM on January 24, 2006

Count me in! I vote for the back room at the Irish Heather :)
posted by fingerbang at 8:56 AM on January 24, 2006

jeffj - any particular reasons against moose's?

Everyone who's interested but don't want to post their contact information in their profiles can email me (address in profile) so I can contact you (I'll either do individual mails or bcc so no-one (else) will know your address).

I'm leaning on 3rd or 4th of Feb, so if you have a preference and haven't spoken up...

Going to check Smiley's and Moose's this afternoon.

i'm in...any weekend should be fine providing enough warning.
posted by ori at 10:07 AM on January 24, 2006

I'll be watching for the final date and location, all the suggestions so far sound ok to me.
posted by FissionChips at 10:20 AM on January 24, 2006

I'll be there. 4th is fine for me as well, and downtown is good, too.
posted by jokeefe at 10:26 AM on January 24, 2006

There are also some nice places in Mount Pleasant, and it's only a coincidence that they are walking distance from where I, carless, live.

*looks innocent*
posted by jokeefe at 10:29 AM on January 24, 2006

I'm interested, may or may not be able to make it.
posted by russilwvong at 11:09 AM on January 24, 2006

I'm interested.
Depending on the date, I'll see if i can make it.
posted by squ1rr3l at 12:14 PM on January 24, 2006

I'm interested, though unsure if I can make it... I'm scrimping and saving for an upcoming trip to Belize, so cash is tight. For what it's worth, I'll chuck my lot in with Feb.04 (although I'd prefer the 3rd), and second the back room of the Heather, as they make a nice black-and-tan. Also, their fries are excellent.
Of course, since I'm not even sure if I'll make it, don't pay too much attention to me.
posted by Zack_Replica at 12:51 PM on January 24, 2006

Yeah, pending date and time, I may be able to come as well.
posted by sharpener at 12:55 PM on January 24, 2006

Oh, and a weeknight is probably better, as long as it's not Monday or Thursday. Friday would work.
posted by sharpener at 12:57 PM on January 24, 2006

I vote for the 4th, preferably something downtown. It will have to be somewhat early as I am going to see Jah Wobble later that night. I would rather not give the Irish Leather any of my money, but that is for personal reasons. I will go with the consensus though.
posted by Razzle Bathbone at 1:10 PM on January 24, 2006

Wow, Smiley O'neal's is a very nice pub. Good variety of potent potables. Reservations can be made, too.

It's 911 W. Pender, attached to a Day's Inn. Skytrain station, Seabus station, and a hub for busses both regular and express.

Anyone have objections to Sat the 4th, 7pm, Smiley O'neal's?
posted by PurplePorpoise at 2:30 PM on January 24, 2006

I like it.
good call on posting it in the elections thread.
posted by heeeraldo at 2:38 PM on January 24, 2006

Sounds good. I have never been, is it one of those places where you actually have to order food with the booze, or just have the intention of doing so?
posted by Razzle Bathbone at 2:51 PM on January 24, 2006

heeraldo - would you mind sending me your contact info (so I can add you to the list to harrass about reservations so I can make reservatins)?

I wasn't sure if I'd violate etiquette by hawking it in the elections thread (but #1 came in to say hi and didn't really say anything too negative...).

Razzle - it looked like you can order just booze. There's an indoor smoking room with the door open so I figure anything goes. Man, it was packed around 1pm today.

Hey, thanks Salmonberry, for suggesting Smiley's!
posted by PurplePorpoise at 2:57 PM on January 24, 2006

I got an email from PurplePorpoise, and yes I'm interested. Feb 4th sounds very good
posted by seawallrunner at 3:04 PM on January 24, 2006

Ditto me on the email... as I replied, I'll do my best to get there - I'll know sooner to the date if I'll make it or not.
anyone else wondering why, if it's an irish whiskey bar, are there no irish whiskeys available? hmm.
posted by Zack_Replica at 4:07 PM on January 24, 2006

Not the Friday?!?! But I work just around the corner! I'll see if I can clamber down from the north shore next Saturday. I'm a definite maybe.
posted by Salmonberry at 7:09 PM on January 24, 2006

Suggested date, time and place work for me. My sockpuppet, on the other hand (pun intended), will be unavailable.
posted by birdsquared at 7:52 PM on January 24, 2006

I'm sorry Salmonberry - I know Sat is usually taken by "real life" friends activities already, I wish I was in a position to offer to pay for the cab fare back to the 'shore.

FWIW, I grew up on the 'shore (Lynn Valley, even) and going overtown either meant leaving by midnight or driving =( - I hope to see you there, though...
posted by PurplePorpoise at 8:35 PM on January 24, 2006

Oh, boo. I live in Kits, but I am going to Kamloops the weekend of the 4th. Couldn't it be a midweek thing?
posted by Jon Mitchell at 2:31 AM on January 25, 2006

So here's what I'm thinkin'. If solid-one-love and I really are the same person ... well then ... wouldn't we be able to drink for, like, half the cost ?

Corrrect me, if I'm wrong.
posted by PareidoliaticBoy at 11:10 PM on January 26, 2006

Thanks for the email, PurplePorpoise. Sat 4 Feb works best for me, and Smiley O'neal's looks like a good venue. I would be able to provide a ride for anyone needing one from the North Shore, if the meetup is on the Saturday.
posted by Deepspace at 11:27 PM on January 26, 2006

I'm interested, but I'd need to find a place to stay because I'm not braving the Heimatsicherheitdienst and driving back to South Vancouver (Bellingham) in the sort of condition this event will leave me in.
posted by warbaby at 7:28 AM on January 28, 2006

Where is this in relation to the train station? Where to stay?
posted by warbaby at 9:49 AM on January 30, 2006

From the train station, your best bet is probably to hop on the Skytrain (public transit) which will take you right downtown. Which Skytrain station is the pub closest to, PurplePorpoise? Waterfront?
posted by sanitycheck at 10:35 AM on January 30, 2006

Oneal's / Saturday works for me. I'll be there.
posted by ori at 7:45 PM on January 30, 2006

I've sent out an RSVP email, I hope I didn't miss anyone - I'll also be posting an updated thread on Friday.

Waterfront is pretty much the closest station. Well, the place is kinda riiiight in between Burrard and Waterfront.

From Waterfront, it's South a couple of blocks to Pender, then West (right) another couple of blocks. From Burrard, head North on Burrard, then East (right) on Pender.

warbaby - I hope that you can find a place to stay; it'd be great to see you!
