RSS feeds for tags on both mefi and ask mefi February 1, 2006 12:20 PM   Subscribe

New feature: RSS feeds for tags on both mefi and ask mefi (example). Tag pages have links to feeds, or just add /rss to the URL to get the feed.

Thanks, Matt. Slowing reworking Metadash and this new feature will be useful for the search feature. Cheers.

Awesome, thanks. If anyone uses that cooterwig tag again, I want to be the first one to know.

Fab. Cheers.

Not thought of this before, but does providing RSS like this imply that syndication is okay? I mean, I can imagine someone with, eg., a weblog about Apple products fancying a little place in their sidebar for MetaFilter posts on the same topic.

yeah, fine syndicate away. Just don't poll the file every 30 seconds.

And can we see how popular each feed is?

Nah, just kidding. Cool Matt, thanks.

mathowie said 'yeah, fine syndicate away. Just don't poll the file every 30 seconds.'

Cool. (I wouldn't use it as per the example I gave above, but it might be nice to have a little filtered MeFi for my own use...)

Matt, when I sub to a MEFI thread, the title of the thread reports back the keyword I tagged it with.
The same does not seem to be true with the AskMe RSS.

In fact, the AskME rss doesn't seem to work as copied from your example:
http://ask.metafilter.com/tags/google

I've tried changed it...and nada.

Are you sure? Check the first title on both of these: mefi ask mefi

They both have a title of (Ask) MetaFilter posts tagged with google

you can't load the URLs in my previous comment?

Hmm. And now it suddenly works.

I think the headache came from Netnewswire trying to autodiscover feeds. If I leave the specific RSS info out...it discovers the AskMefi feed.

Sorry. Oh, yeah, man, fast response. {Pats matt on back}

NetNewsWire will try to autodiscover the RSS feed from the URL - and I think it hits the askMEFI rss first and brings that back.

Different note - can you add the anonymous tag to all the Anon AskMefi? I'd <3 a subscribtion to that.

I think Matt has said in the past he's not going to give feeds for users and their posts for antistalker countermeasure reasons, but second best is just keeping tabs on this.

Whoops. You got your heart thingy in my <em> tag.

Any chance of doing this based on the domain-name tag URLs?

What I'm trying to say is... http://batshitinsane.metafilter.com/rss doesn't work, and it would be extra nice if it did. I prefer to access tags this way - saves some URL junk.

sorry Jimbob, that won't be happening.

This feature would be much more powerful if we were able to tag eachother's posts. Is this something being considered are are we held back by fear of idiotic abuse? We have tagging but as yet limited folksonomy. (Sorry to keep on about it but I do think we've got this one very badly wrong.)

I talked at length, back when I was poking mathowie with a stick to do tags every chance I got, about what I wanted for my pretty folksonomy pony: a bookmarking/tagging feature for private organization of posts, sitewide. Private display on your profile, for you only. Tickbox 'Make Public?' on your profile page, it's open for all to see, and aggregates into the sitewide tag cloud.

I'd still like to have this, but I won't die if I don't get it.

Would it be possible to subscribe to (the comments on) a specific thread? Sometimes threads are so interesting I want to keep following the discussion, leading to lots of daily reloading. (More specifically, I'd like to be able to follow http://ask.metafilter.com/mefi/27155 automagically)
posted by lodev at 7:29 AM on February 2, 2006

You can already do that using MetaRSS, lodev.

Eg, here's the RSS feed for the thread you're interested in.

Oop, just in case the above makes it look like I made MetaRSS, I didn't, sequential did.

jack_mo: Thanks! Never found it before.. subscribing right now.
