Invites to Newsvine February 27, 2006 7:21 PM   Subscribe

Newsvine. It was posted to the front page before, but it's still in beta and is pretty much invite-only. I have the ability to invite 20 of my nearest, dearest friends to join in. I realize that excludes the vast majority of you all, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. If you'd like an invitation, send e-mail to emelenjr at gmail dot com.

What's it do?
posted by sohcahtoa at 7:24 PM on February 27, 2006

It is Newsfilter. Seriously. A private Newsfilter.
posted by Loto at 7:33 PM on February 27, 2006

via the wikimapedia: Newsvine is a website consisting of a community-driven newsonomy. Users write articles and save links to external content, vote, comment and chat on article pages created by both users and journalists from the Associated Press.

Also, once emelenjr hands out his 20, I have 20 to hand out, also, if there is need.

I would love one. andrew.burd at gmail.com

Thanks

I'm having trouble finding the original thread, which was deleted due to Newsvine being invite-only, but it seems to be about reading news stories as well as writing your own stories published on your own subdomain (you.newsvine.com) that will generate ad revenue for you. I'm still trying to figure it out myself. I was intrigued by the earlier FPP and signed up through the site to be a beta tester, which is how I ended up with the invitations. Not sure if non-members will be able to view this page, but here's Newsvine's Welcome To Newsvine page.

This'd be damned handy at the moment.

were you guys on the "private beta mailing list" ?
posted by amberglow at 7:39 PM on February 27, 2006

Thanks for the invite emelenjr, it seems mostly to be AP feeds at the moment, with people able to comment on them or publish their own news feeds within the community. I wish you could filter what you got as news though, and it's much more US centric than the CBC/BBC stuff I usually read.

It's like digg/delicious combined with News. I find it tiring, like too much work, but it'll be cool when thousands of geeks start hammering on it.

I have a zillion invites. ping me over IM and I'll send a few.

newsonomy?

"NEWSFUCKINGONOMY?"

What the hell is that?
posted by scarabic at 9:14 PM on February 27, 2006

I agree with mathowie.

Also, they need to figure out a way for actual new items to bubble up to the top. It's kind of annoying right now to try and find some interesting new data.

And there's no metatalk-like central area for issues to be discussed. I feel like I'm just floating in some sort of News Overload Ether over there.
posted by blacklite at 9:15 PM on February 27, 2006

wait wait yeah, I just saw 'newsonomy', too, on re-scanning the thread after my comment.

does it actually say newsonomy?

... wow.
posted by blacklite at 9:16 PM on February 27, 2006

I was responsible for the oops-I-fucked-up-FPP, and have been handing out apologetic invites since. I think I have 15 left. I'll be glad to hand them around, unless your MeFi handle is Glider or thirteenkiller.

I keed, I keed.
posted by BitterOldPunk at 9:36 PM on February 27, 2006

Someone send me one. I must know what a newsonomy is. It's got to be either a collaborative filter or a surgical procedure.

I'd hate there to be something going on and for me to miss out on an invite.

In retrospect, I like 'newsonomy' more (just slightly more) than I like 'folksonomy', which the boing boing wankfesters were tossing around a couple of years ago. Unfortunately, it has a wikipedia entry, unlike 'newsonomy'.

There are just some words that make me want to stab people with spoons when I see them.
posted by blacklite at 11:03 PM on February 27, 2006

I don't think anyone would ever have uttered "newsonomy" if "folksonomy" hadn't been out there so long. Your feelings about the blogosphere wankers notwithstanding, at least "folksonomy" preserves one more consonant of "taxonomy" in a clever x --> ks bit of letter-play :)

scarabic.newsvine.com

You've gotta love a site that gives you a subdomain as soon as you finish the 6-line standard reg form.

I mean, shit, the next thing you know, the menu at McDonalds will be called a "burgeronomy"
posted by scarabic at 11:10 PM on February 27, 2006

Hmm, it's slow as hell at the moment, to the point of making Firefox freeze, but it certainly has potential. I'm going to "beta-test" it by posting every minor bit of local political news to the Politics section and see whether I get complaints or congratulations. I encourage other non-US citizens who are pissed off about the US gettting its own top-level category to do the same.

By the way, it appears I now have 20 invites too. If the others run out, email me.

I too would like an invite: Jason23@gmail.com

If you read this and it's been an hour or three since I posted and you're graciously fixin' to give me an invite, check down-thread first; I'll post a followup when I get one.

I must say, that's a pretty slick interface going on over at that Newsvine.

Yeah, it is a NewsFilter that is unashamed about it. Too soon to say but my initial impression is that it is quite civil. With SpoFi choking on its own popularity it is a nice sports outlet as well.

Be certain to check out the NewsVine Primer.

I've a few invites left if anyone else needs in.

I tried it and really didn't like it. Too much content not enough filtering. Zero worthwhile discussion.

Also my plan. The lack of Canadian news was quite alarming.

I've got invites too, any Canadians who want in my email is in my profile.

Toss me into the fray. I'll add Canuck content.
posted by five fresh fish at 12:54 PM on February 28, 2006

Interesting, but I don't quite see the point - it just has all the news I read this morning on it, and no one commenting on anything. And I'm not sure adding non-US content is worth the bother - the whole thing seems set up to be an Americonomy (eg. there aren't even subcategories by country under Europe!).

I have a faint memory of a MetaFilter user setting up something sort of similiar to this, only a bit more useful, a couple of years back - I think it was a site that magically suggested stories you'd be interested in based on what you submitted/rated/posted on your own weblog (don't think it did discussion stuff, though). Can't remember the name, though - anyone know what I'm on about?

Cheers for the invite Dreamghost!
