PUI or PWI? March 9, 2006 5:53 PM Subscribe
Sometimes, like in threads like this, it seems that some are either commiting PUI (posting under the influence) or PWI (posting while intoxicated). What is the correct terminology? (I ask because I do it all the time and it would make a great disclaimer!)
Never attribute to alcohol what can be explained by garden-variety stupidity.
I used to PUI way back when, but soon remembered that what I said would be there forever (or until Matt finally gets tired of this shit (or his revenue stream dries up (or he sells it to fucking google))), and I do tend to run my mouth when potted, and I was taken to task (or simply dismissed with an infuriating 'oh, stav is just drinking again, obviously') often enough because I make so secret for my love of the grain and the grape (in moderation), so I stopped.
I can, however, bring to mind at least a couple of users whose comments vary seemingly at random from well-reasoned and lucid to 'SHITCOKC LOL!', and the only reason for that I've been able to come up with is over-self-medication. So it goes.

Does this MetaTalk thread really link to the MetaTalk thread below it? Are you doing this on a dare? I'll have to go with cribcage on this one.

Booze and the internet were made for each other. Or at least for me.
And what jessamyn said. MetaMetaTalk? Can I start sucking my own dick yet or is it still too early for that. ;)

Heh. The first constructive criticism I remember receiving on my writing was from a prim British highschool lit teacher who was complimentary but described what style I'd developed as '...a bit parenthetical.' When I'm feeling even weaker of mind than usual (like today), I tend to relapse.

I'm a huge fan of the intoxicated post (not that I do it myself, of course). Come on, they're hilarious. A smart person with a skinful can be monstrously entertaining: certainly a damned sight moreso than a po-faced puritan bitching about inappropriate behaviour or prissy protocol violations on MetaTalk.

Ergo "Idiots."
That hurts my feelings. This drinking and posting thing has been addressed before but with no resolve. For example one might post some really hurtful mean thing and then, feeling some remorse, might like to flag their comments as "PUI" or "PWI". The link in question? Meh, it merely inspired my question.

I didn't mean to hurt your feelings. However the reason it's not all front and center resolved is because generally drunk-posting is seen like drunk-dialing, a sort of lame way to treat something/someone that you care about. Put another way, if it's not at all obvious that this is what you're doing, you don't need a cutesy disclaimer. If you're out-of-it enough that you need to apologize for the way you're behaving on MeFi, maybe you should think twice about behaving that way?
The last time we had a high-profile PWD incident, it resulted in a lot of comment deletion, one banning, and one and a half MetaTalk threads which was sort of a pain in the ass for me personally, though maybe it was worth it from a spectator perspective.

And entirely unable to purchase any hooch until I cash my paycheck. Tommorow. And it's all your fault.

Well, you know, to paraphrase Shakespeare, it It provokes the desire to be cute but it takes away the performance. The operant phrase is impaired judgement. You thought you were the life of the party at the time and then, via the magic of a camcorder, say, you are introduced to yourself as you were and, worse, the record belongs to someone else. Permanent, folks, every comment is carved in stone, something to which random tricksters, stalkers or beady eyed grudgeholders can link forever. A person can make quite a fool of him or herself without resorting to intoxicants as it is

y2karl, sort of. Certain community members have discerned which of their comments will be thrown into the dustbin, while maintaining an air of sanity around everything else they scribe. I don't blame Matt and Jessamyn for deleting the really dumb stuff, but let's face it--certain users have two extra editors.

I was so utterly drunk (there was a free bar, not my fault) when I commented in that thread that it was quite a surprise to see the comment there this morning. Thank the Lord I managed to form a coherent argument peppered with bon mots rather than just saying 'Cock this.' and posting an image. Sorry.

Uhm, homeboy? If you can pull that off, I don't think time of day should be a consideration. This is based on close observation of dogs I have shared a domicile with. If they're any indication, you should also lay on your back trying to make the sun glint off your jewels whenever company comes over.

Y2Karl's comment was thoughtful and well-written, but I have to leap on one particular mistake which drives me crazy:
Paraphrase is often misused to mean "borrow a phrase from," but that's not what it means. It means "restate the same thing in different words."
If you say "Alcohol makes you horny but unable to perform," you are indeed paraphrasing Shakespeare, because your new sentence has exactly the same meaning as Shakespeare's original. But if you say " It provokes the desire to be cute but it takes away the performance", you are not paraphrasing. You are using some of the same words to create an entirely new meaning.
Again, sorry to be anal-retentive in response to a good and witty post, but, for some reason, this common and innocent error bugs me far more than it should.

Yeah? But if you'd left it the hell alone and let it play out however it played out it wouldn't have had to be a pain in your ass, would it? Jesus, free the speech and your ass will follow.
Really.
