Break out the big guns, kids, There's a coup underway!
I posted this for two reasons:
1) I thought it would be kind of funny
2) To show people how idiotic they look when they feel the need to be the MeFi police over and over and over again.
If you're so concerned about time and space, stop wasting so much yourself!
And some of you should stop taking yourselves so seriously while you're at it.
You, sir, have insulted my honor. I demand satisfaction. [glove slap] I challenge you to a duel!
(Well, not really, but you shouldn't have done it, bondcliff.)

Matt's gonna be pissed. If he hasn't bailed already. A triple post in Metatalk is taking the joke a bit too far, no?

I agree this has gone too far...that Bondcliff's post took it too far. If I were Matt I'd be pretty egregiously pissed off. You might catch him in a good mood and he'll think it's funny. but I wouldn't bet on it.

We're beyond the MattSignal at this point. What we need to do is initiate a few more of these kinds of threads, wait for them to get filled with newbies and trolls, secretly tell all the a-listers to retreat to MetaTalk, and press the Self-Destruct button.

I have insulted my own honor by not realizing this was already being addressed in MeTa. I demand satisfaction, and I challenge myself to a duel. (Looks like another Friday night demanding satisfaction, slapping gloves and duelling with myself. Maybe I should fuck more goats.)

Everybody e-mail Matt "You're needed at MetaFilter" right now. Honest.
I'm glad Matt's not here. That way we can all see what happens when he's gone, and how much bloody work this has become for him. It would always be like this if he weren't here trying to maintain some semblance of order.
Self-policing my sugar-coated ass.

Once again, my angry outburst is cause for humorous badinage. I'd learn from my mistakes, but I kind of enjoy the comebacks.

To be honest, I think all this was caused by Friday Syndrome. Some people just got carried away I guess. I am in no position to decry comments as inane, but everyone just has to keep that crap off the front page.

Wow. Well, the tension around here has been building for a while; it was inevitable there would be some messy release eventually. The question is, will this day's events result in a calmer more balanced atmosphere tomorrow, or contribute to an even greater problem? That answer is largely up to us, because we are the users.
While the doubled MeTa commentary on the quadrupled commentary on MeFi doubles followed by a clueless double might have been (was) excessive and ill advised, it might work out alright if people use this opportunity to really evaluate what Metafilter means to them and some solutions are found.
I've been thinking about it a lot lately. What do I get out of Metafilter, and what do I need to do in return for that? I don't comment much around here, and I've only posted a few links, none of them that great, but this is one of the few sites I visit several times a day. I love the commentary, many times I won't even visit the links, I'll just read what people say about them. I love the deep links that I'd never have found on my own. I clearly get a lot of value from this site, and I'm trying to figure out what I should do for it, for Matt.
I don’t know what the answer is, I don't have a solution, but I do know that bondcliff had a valid point, the self-policing that was so effective for a small group of friendly internet co-explorers is not effective at all with 12000 people, many of whom see Metafilter as a news compilation rather than a meta filter. The result is more work for Matt and more frustration from the old timers who see things changing and realize that their old methods of helping keep things on track had become ineffectual.

maybe this is like the Lord of the Flies and this is about when the kids discover that there are no adults around.
maybe Matt is watching this from a distance taking notes for the next great Sociological Commentary novel.
maybe the end result of MeFi's descent into Newsblogging is that someone thought this was on par with American Media and sent Matt anthrax.
gosh, maybe Matt has anthrax.
I, for one, feel very sheepish about my fun with Haiku on the front page thread. I really didn't mean to encourage bad behavior; I thought Matt would step in any moment.
I feel like I just got caught with my adult-pants down. Nothing is right -- we need to be part of the solution, not the problem.
MeFi is us. Taking a Zen approach to that connection would be a good thing to do.

I second rebecca's motion. I'd pull the plug and go back to holding laptops in funny positions in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.
MeFi would make an excellent research study.
