This is why people need to have email addys in their profile.

I have prepared a one-act play based on the post in question:

This is the second "request for update on an AskMe" this week. Have y'all discovered the wonders of email?

Have you discovered the wonders of reading?

I'm telling y'all, these 24k+ers have a weird conception of what MeTa's for. I'm surprised Matt and Jess haven't started deleting these things; it's only going to get worse.

Speaking of worse, I wonder how it's going wrt the Pepsi Blue onslaught. We had a real rash of five-dollar dicks trying to screw this place over. Seems to be quieter this week.

The thread is still open, y'know.

Apparently not. Not only did I not check if the member in question had an address, I thought I read the first comment as:

Indeed, people need to post addresses, fer feck sake.

that's ok, I don't really think this should be here anyway. And I agree with you.

This is merely one of the things MeTa is being used for that it is not intended for. That is to say, I agree with scarabic and puke & cry.

Oh, right. I forgot that you and you alone decide what's appropriate to MeTa.

Because this isn't MetaFilter related at all, and it's not like we haven't had half a dozen followup requests for that airnxtz ebay scammer AskMe, and dozens of other successful and community-accepted followup requests for other threads. And of course, we never have had anyone come in and post to MeTa and, say, offer thanks for especially good advice or results from an AskMe thread. Or even worse better, dating advice followups. Hah!

Would you prefer that people post followups or followup requests as new questions in AskMe, or should they be front page posts to the blue? Or should we just email them directly to you for your Sovereign, Imperial approval?

While we're on the subject, Your Highness, what exactly do you deem appropriate for MeTa? Flameouts, bitchfests, and snark -- 24/7? You seem to have a real chip on your shoulder for anything even remotely positive or constructive ever appearing on MeTa.

If this is so, fuck off already. Take a flying fuck at the moon. If not - chill. You're threatening to collapse my delicious souffle' with all your belly-achin' and grumbling.

Wow, what was that about?
posted by puke & cry at 9:28 PM on May 10, 2006

Sorry. The original poster didn't have an email address in his/her profile, the thread hasn't had much progress in a while, and I wasn't sure where else to ask.

Sorry for the trouble.

So... does anybody here like stuff? I like stuff...

Stuff? Not so much. Things, on the other hand, I adore.

So OK, just to be absolutely clear, any use of MeTa whatsoever will be attacked. I must remember my helmet next time I come here lest I be killed by a stray invective.

Flameouts, bitchfests, and snark -- 24/7?

You say that like it's a bad thing.

i was once walking home from a warehouse party in west oakland and I passed a store with no sign front. There was a man sitting on the front step. "Hey, guy! You like stuff?", he called after me, "I got lots of stuff! Stuff you like."

Best sales pitch ever made. He had a pretty cool organ thing in there but he wanted too much money.

I didn't buy anything.

I'm for this question. I think it's a follow-up several members would be interested in, and rather than having the person have to email several people, this both archives and makes it easier to follow up.

Thanks spiderskull.

I concur with spiderskull.

It's technically "about mefi", and it's surely better than reposting to AskMe which will garner no attention if it's in the comments, and which will annoy people if it's a "new askme"...

Wow, what was that about?

He's just mad because I said the same thing about the hilariously pointless thread he posted to MeTa yesterday.
posted by mediareport at 7:47 AM on May 11, 2006

I agree it's a fine question, too, especially in light of the whole anonymity push in the original thread, in which everyone was advising that weaponsgradecarp remove all identifying info in his/her user profile.

divabat, you don't have to listen to me; I have no special claim to authority here. I just wanted to point out that I think there seems to have been a shift in how newer folks see MeTa. We've always had chatty threads here, but as I recall, the reason Matt extended the time before closing AskMe threads was to incorporate update questions exactly like this. Again, it's one of those "what would MeFi look like if everyone did what you just did?" things. The thread wasn't that old; you could have at least tried posting in it first. That's all.
posted by mediareport at 7:54 AM on May 11, 2006

Maybe some attempt at defining why I don't see this as a good use of MeTa would help.

It's a 1-person-to-1-person message.

"Hey, guy, I'm curious about your thing. What's up?"

When people show up to say thanks for all the great AskMe help, that's a one-to-many message. "I am thanking all of you."

Threads like "Should we ban sockpuppets?" are for all to discuss, and so are many-to-many in intent.

It just seems inefficient to hijack the MeTa front page for a personal message to someone. Perhaps if he'd shown up to offer a full report, this thread would have been saved, but the fact that he didn't only underscores the fact that it's not an effective way for one person to reach another person. Most members don't come here.

I've been wondering how long it would take for the good will generated by MeFi Comp to wear off.

I think what makes MeTa interesting is all of the stuff that people always bitch about being a poor use of MeTa. I read it for the flaming, the updates, the callouts - if commenting on threads can be covered by flagging and feature requests and bug reports and policy questions can be accomplished by emailing mathowie and follow-ups can be done by emailing the particular person what brings anyone here? Let's just let MeTa be about metafilter and stop bitching about it.

unless, of course, there's a whole MeTa thread about the bitching and then that's 100% cool by me.
