Browser Crash on the Metafilter Expressway May 15, 2006 2:44 PM   Subscribe

This morning at work my browser crashed instantly every time I tried to go to MeFi. Wha' Happened?

Both Firefox and IE on a Windows machine, tried it with cookies on and off. The RSS feed kept updating, so the site was up; in fact, I tried using the RSS feed to go directly to a post and bypass the front page without success. I get home this afternoon and everything works fine on my wife's windows laptop. Is this a MeFi problem or related to the network at my office? There has never been a problem accessing MeFi from work before, and the rest of the interweb seemed to work fine today. Just curious, although not being able to enjoy a good MeTa flamout at work could really make the day drag on.

Today has not been Metafilter's best day.

I had the same issue. If I kept IE open eventually it would unlock and show a 504 BAD GATEWAY error so I'm assuming this was some kind of DNS issue, though I'm not especially knowledgable on such things.

This morning, it was working perfectly for me except that MetaTalk didn't work at all.

There were some dns issues this morning that would make new dns requests to metafilter time out. This had the weird side effect of letting any metafilter urls you had already loaded [in the same session? I'm not sure] work while others would die. So, I could load metatalk.metafilter.com but not ask.metafilter.com until the dns server was rebooted. This may have something to do with your problem.

dns server was down this morning. Dunno why it would "crash" your browser though.
