I will not take that phrase from your post. It seems that a favourite phrase of MetaFilter's is from a misremebered bit of dialogue from a hollywood movie about the Amish, not from the Amish themselves.
Found it. (search for "thing from your hand" within the pdf file)

Imagine if we found out that the Amish have now adopted the phrase because they read on Metafilter that it was Amish.

One of my closest friends is a conservative Mennonite. I've emailed her the link and asked her if she knows the answer. If she has anything to say on the topic, I'll post it in the thread.

Does it really count as a "favorite phrase of metafilter" when your search of the phrase on this site only turned up five results?

You've got to expand the results (and google's MF index sucks anyways). I alone used this phrase four times according to the expanded search. I though it was more but I might have used variations.

FYI: I live near a very Amish community, and I have heard this phrase used often. Usually though, it has been during the Rum Spring, and used by youth jokingly. I'm assuming the phrase is actually a serious remark by the elders.

Apparently, I've introduced both this phrase, and "anal ultimatum" to Metafilter. I'm not sure exactly whether I should feel proud.
