I flagged it as soon as I saw it, because if enough people flag it, something cool happens. I'm not going to tell you - it's a surprise.

I'd noticed that about his/her comments, but I'd only seen them on metafilter proper. Offtopic humor and such there? No problem. Ask? Bah. Yeah, I agree, Not Cool.
posted by Stunt at 7:23 PM on August 25, 2006

that's mildly amusing. I had just flagged one of his comments in AskMe, and was moving on and popped into MeTa and LO! there is his very own callout... One or two stupid comments = removal of comments. A pattern should = TO. imo

Yeah, it's not cool to be a Trekkie.

But since I hate Nicholas Lindstrom with a white-hot hockey passion, I must ask for nlindstrom to be sent to the box. Or we could just pull his shirt over his head and beat him for a while.

Wow, I had written the guy an email saying "um make sure you keep your answers on-topic" and then noticed that all his AskMe answers but one or two were crappy noise, and a lot of them were posted within minutes of each other. Banned.

And really, making fun of Trekkies is so old hat and boring. It's been done to death by much funnier people.

I was hoping for a permaban and not just a timeout.

To be honest, there's just one sort of ban: the kind where you can't post/comment. If we'd consider letting you post again (maybe we'd like an apology or an explanation or maybe you need to sleep it off) then we'll "unban" you. The nuances between timeouts, bans, permabans and whatever are just semantic.

There is the very rare and almost never seen scorched earth ban where all traces of you are removed from the site but I can almost never remember that happening. Similarly the "I try to load metafilter.com and I get plastic.com instead" IP-style ban was in vogue for a while but I think it's faded away (and I sure as hell don't know how to do it).

I got an apology from that guy right after I went to bed last night. It's possible he has some sort of PWI-type explanation. I did remove about 10-12 comments from him overall.

ask is kinda special, I know that so he must do. My understanding is this: take the piss in metatalk, less so in metafilter and not at all in ask.meta. Simple.

However the only reason for a ForeverBan is being boring. Make the explanation/excuse/apology public please.

This callout is worth it if only for drawing my attention to this bizarre question, which I had missed before.
posted by brundlefly at 6:41 AM on August 26, 2006

yeh, bizarre. i made no comment at the time, but that question struck me as slightly off. witness the psychoporn elements that needn't have been phrased:

she was very clean and completely shaved from the neck down, a fact that was now on full display

she kept one arm resolutely clamped across her full bosom

She was sweating profusely, her nipples were hard

these just struck me as being unnecessary, and gave a distasteful flavour to a question that was ostensibly about a fucked-up person who probably needed medical or psychiatric help.

The fact that she was attractive and fit gave the story a bit more juice. If he had just described her as "normal" or whatever, I would have still pictured a haggard lady. The fact that he described her as physically attractive, and paying attention to bits of personal hygiene and self-maintenance, made the freak out seem more unexpected and thus intriguing.

Actually, there's an interesting way to do this. It could be done with AJAX, but it would be must less server intensive done as SQL.

The idea of having "MetaKarma" is interesting but dangerous. It shouldn't matter if your fpp / askme answer comes from someone who is popular among the mefi circle or not, what matters is if it is interesting or useful.

Oh, man, I loved the scorched-Earth ban. It's like that story about the couple that goes to a hotel, and the next day the husband can't find his wife and is asking everyone if they know where she is and they're all like, "she must have checked out without telling you" and he gets all crazy and calls the cops and finally they admit that she actually came down with some crazy kill-you-and-your-whole-family disease overnight and so they had to remove all traces of her existance because they didn't want to alert the other hotel guests.

That was some good banning. Unperson banning.

patr1ck: I was thinking of something different. I also don't care how popular someone is, but I do want to be able to connect the dots to some of the relationships here. Every now and then I see one member spout off to another seemingly randomingly. Then later I find it was because of a tiff in a thread I missed.

I was hoping for: A is a puppet of B who argues often with C who loves everything A has ever posted, but can't stand B.
